The calm after the storm

Being hardy motorhomers who use our van all year round, Storm Arwen hit the night before our planned trip to Nth Yorkshire. We checked all routes and arrived safely at the Wharfedale site only to be informed that they had no power, water or phone lines. We decided to stay anyway but alas, power was still off the following morning so we left. Not wanting to waste the last of our annual leave, we spontaneously rang Southport to see how they were affected by the storm and if they had availability. The receptionist who took our call was really helpful and sorted out our Wharfedale booking from her technology as neither the wardens at Wharfedale or ourselves could amend our initial booking. She advised us when to arrive but in an accommodating tone like if we were a bit early, due to our previous nights adventures, it would be fine. We were 10 mins early but welcomed onto site and with a short wait for the last of the departures, were able to check in and choose our pitch with ease. They had had some electric problems but had managed to isolate those pitches with issues and we still had lots of choice. We had used a lot of gas the night before but we're able to exchange our calor light on site which was great. The wardens were helpful, kindly spoken and visual around the site doing their maintenance and cleaning. We found them extremely approachable. The park behind the site had an event on so was closed from mid afternoon to set up. The beach is so accessible from the site and appeared to be a lot cleaner than the last time we visited. All amenities on site were clean and tidy. Unlike our last visit, reception did have a stock of basic supplies in to purchase. My only bug bear which is pretty consistent of all sites is the speeding of vehicles around the site and also cheating of the one way rules where applicable. As in life though, rules and regulations don't apply to all people. Thanks for the welcome Southport. We will be back.

Excellent stay

This is the first time we have visited this site and I’m sure we will be back. The lovely new couple that were in reception were marvellous. Due to a stupid error in my part I hadn’t completed my booking so I wasn’t due to arrive. They sorted my booking out for me with lovely smiles on their faces although I’m sure they must have been thinking “what an idiot!”. We had a perfect pitch, absolutely level and because it was quite quiet we had no barking dogs, bliss! The facilities as usual on a club site were spotless.

Excellent in every way

Just returned home after spending 4 nights on this site. It was our second visit, but with a long gap between. However, it did not disappoint in any way. The pitches are a generous size, are flat and reasonably level. The toilet/shower facilities were spotless, and the site is well maintained and tidy. Fortunately we did not encounter any of the "rule breaking" highlighted by the previous reviewer, and had no problems with TV reception either (as mentioned by another reviewer). There is plenty to do in and around Southport without the need to travel far and wide. There are lots of cycle routes, which are generally quite easy because the landscape is very flat. The ride north along the coast path (NCN62) to Churchtown via Crossens to the Botanical Gardens is worth doing, and it is mostly traffic free. There are two pubs close to the Gardens both serving decent beer and food. If you want a bracing walk, then the "Velvet Trail", which runs to the west of the dunes, parallel to Coastal Road is easily accessible direct from the site. It leads all the way to Ainsdale Beach. We can also recommend the Mamma Mia Italian restaurant on the east side of Lords Street, about 15 minutes walk from the site. The food was good, the service was good, and the prices are reasonable.

Lovely site

The site is very clean and tidy, pitches adequate, the staff very friendly and informative, a credit to the CAMC, the only thing spoiling this site and several others are some members inability to abide by the club rules, 5mph round site was clearly broken numerous times by people, walking across other peoples pitches and dog fouling late at night are just a few of the things I encountered during my stay, but the site itself is well worth a visit due to the local park (for dog walks)and the close proximity of the town centre,

Facilities are a credit to the Wardens

The title says it all, these are the most spotless facilities on a club site in a long time. There was a change in site staff while we were there so credit to all of them. An earlier reviewer mentioned his tv reception was poor, there are coax plug ins on the bollards for the use of. Fortunately we never encountered people walking across our pitch but sadly some people can be very rude! We had an absolute cracking meal at the Fisherman’s Rest again and another at Volare no. 613 Lord St. If you’re heading into Liverpool then seek out Maggi Mays cafe excellent food at reasonable prices, lovely staff too. See you in 2022 Southport!

Lovely site and great staff

This was my first visit to a CAMC site after returning to caravanning and the club after a 20 year gap. We arrived in a horrendous gale with lashings of rain. The site was flooded on several pitches (and the access road) but the staff seemed to be doing their level best to keep on top of the situation and over the next four days we stayed their work was noticeable. They appeared to be constantly working on the grounds. Well done to them. Maybe better site drainage required though as it limited the number of available pitches. Road noise is noticeable, it is an urban 'town' site after all, but I didn't find it obtrusive even though we were on one of the closest pitches to the main road.....until the ambulances and police went past at night with their sirens on!! (everywhere else in the country they don't use sirens at night according to my wife, an A&E ambulance medic). Although I wouldn't rate the site itself as 'good' for families, its proximity to the town and the town's family orientated facilities makes it ideal and well within walking distance. Enough to keep families of all ages happy My only real concern about the site was the openness for the public. Disconcerting when leaving your van for the day, BUT, nothing actually happened so maybe less of a real problem than a perceived one. We do not use a TV as we watch on our iPads via 4G Wi-Fi which seemed good in the area so no problems. We did not use the site Wi-Fi. I read some of the comments made previously on the remarks page about site etiquette standards being low (walking through pitches and dogs on others pitches) but I didn't find this to be the case, indeed all other members (bar one particularly grumpy chap lol) were very friendly. We had a day out in Southport, Blackpool and Liverpool and all were within easy reach. Lots to see. I was always impressed with the cleanliness and atmosphere on Caravan Club (as it was then) sites when I was a member in the 90s and I was not let down on my return. A beautiful site. Again, well done to the staff. Would I visit again? absolutely, without hesitation. One word of warning though to anyone visiting the site for the first time (and nothing to do with the club or site itself) is the Esplanade road along the sea front past Southport to access the site. Be VERY wary of the heavily undulating surface. It will easily cause your car/caravan/motorhome to bottom out if you are travelling anywhere near the legal speed limit on that stretch and could cause damage or instability problems. it only lasts for around half a mile but it is a real, unpleasant roller coaster.

members

We have just spent a few weeks at this site and it was lovely and clean as it always is when we have been there the only problem and it seems to be getting worse is that quite a few members think it is alright to walk through other peoples pitches any time they want and they also walk their dogs too .We love dogs but take them in the park or the sand dunes the dogs will love it just keep off other members pitches .

Great site.

It started when we arrived, the lady on reception was lovely, she obviously loves her job and it shows. The whole site is neat and tidy but the shower block was exceptional, it looked brand new. The access to Victoria Park is a bonus (the Dog gives 5 stars for that).

Campsite Of 2 Halves

There are things about this site which mean it will appeal to some, but not to others, unfortunately. The staff were friendly and helpful and they obviously work hard to keep the facilities and the site in general maintained to the usual high CAMC standards. The site is conveniently located for the seaside and Southport town with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants and family friendly attractions which are mostly seasonal. Morrison's supermarket is also just a short walk away, either through Victoria Park (privately run - the gates were locked at 4.30 when we were there) or along Rotten Row, the road at the rear of the site. However - we were uncomfortable with the unrestricted public pedestrian access to the site, which is presumably why there were so many CCTV cameras and locks on the toilet blocks. The south end of the site is open and exposed, and needs a lot more greenery - something I understand the wardens are working towards. There is also pretty constant traffic noise and a fair bit of street light pollution from the road nearby. Considering the site's relatively urban location, our TV signal reception was rubbish. As this seems to be a recognised problem, then co-ax points on the pitch bollards would be welcome.

Another great CAMC site

We only stayed one night on our way to an event locally. Our dog particularly liked walking on the dunes across from the site and we loved being so near the sea. As always the facilities and staff were great.
