A perfect site, in a perfect position, with perfect site managers.
With the exception of 2020 (lockdown) I have visited every year since 2010, often twice such as in 2023.
There is nothing to add to my first sentence. And nothing I could say that I haven't said before.
I hope it may be more helpful if I focus on cycling from the site. (I'll cover running – or walking – in a later review following another visit next spring.)
I'll restrict myself to two road cycling routes I cycled during a recent four night stay. I've cycled both previously – they are worth repeating.
The first is 25 miles, all on road, the route for which can be found here: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/26147143 . This isn't without climbs and parts are quite exposed to wind but the roads are quiet and there is noting too testing.
For a longer route (47 miles), with approx 1.2 miles offroad at mile 29, see: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/48238945 . This longer route has everything and is one of my favourites anywhere. The short offroad section can easily be avoided if wished - at a T-junction on a bend when entering Doddington (a little north of Wooler) the route turns right. Instead turn left. (The route as downloaded shows a left turn and then a turn around but ignore the turnaround.) This short lane leads to the B6525 where turn right towards Wooler. Taking the second on the left immediately returns to the garmin route. Allow plenty of time to enjoy this brilliant ride.
Just two suggestions which I hope someone may find helpful.
You’d never guess it’s a 5MPH speed limit you know!
Lovely wee site tucked away along a country road although no security barriers at site entrance is a big concern! Had a lovely Saturday out in Alnwick and dog walk around about site is perfect. Only criticism is the absolute avalanche of 5MPH speed limit signs all over the place (yes, even on the shower doors believe it or not so maybe the speed limit for showering is also 5MPH🤔). I’m an adult and everyone else there was an adult so please treat us as adults!! One or two correctly placed signs is enough to set the tone of the rules, break a safety rule and you deserve minimum a stern talking to and at worse - asked to leave (fair in my book). Please do not treat us all with the same attitude as you would to a safety rule breaker, we are not all the same!
Superbly located for exploring the NE coast
This Club site is superbly maintained by Craig & Jo as they take pride in the presentation of the site as you enter, to making sure that the toilet block and the washing areas are sparkling. The site is, in our honest opinion, not ideal for families with small children as no facilities for them.
The beach at Seahouses is within easy driving distance. There is a massive beach (when the tides out) backed by some fantastic sand dunes. Many others have mentioned the many places to visit, but we cannot stress strongly enough for everyone to visit the NT site at Cragside. There is so much to do and see, we had to go back three, yes three times!
Lovely Clean Site
This is a lovely site that is kept in top condition by the two wardens. The toilet block is modern and clean and the whole site is kept in good condition.
The dog walk/nature walk that leads down by the river is perfect for dog owners, but if you turn right out of the site you come to Branton Lakes where you can walk further. Its a bit overgrown, but quieter during busy times.
For shopping, theres a garage and shop on the main road that is ok for essentials, but Alnwick is only 10 miles away where you have Sainsburys, Aldi and Lidl. Try to avoid the town centre at busy times though...nightmare!
The coastline is fantastic, and a 45 minute drive gets you to Seahouses and Bambrough. The castle is certainly worth visiting, and not stupidly expensive either.
20 minutes back towards Newcastle you get National Trust Cragside which is simply stunning. Theres a 6 mile drive around the gardens with car parks if you want to get out into the park
The weather hasn't been as kind to us here, but it hasn't dampened our enthusiasm for the site
Quiet location and well kept
Easy access to site a little way down a lane just off the main A road , had a nice welcome from the relief warden that was on duty , who seemed to have a passion about the 5mph speed limit ! (kept mentioning it).
Layout of pitches are a little bit like , little circular cul de sacs but that was fine for us. We did have to move pitch after a day as our pitch was in the shade all the time which actually made it very dark and the ground never dried , although it was about 25-28 degrees ! The pitch we moved to was in the sun all day , so pick your pitch carefully. Site kept very clean , and the facilities were very clean , and loved the fact that when they were cleaning them they opened two toilets by the entrance to the block that could be used , great idea.
The site has a really big dog walk, which is good on its own for a walk as it goes down to the River Breamish itself and it amazes me that the wardens cut the paths in the grass here as well. Also if you go out the entrance to the park and turn right , there is an entrance to a big wildlife lake and reserve.
It is located fairly inland , so any visits to Holy Island or Bamburgh really require a car which we had , and they are about 30-60 mins away depending on traffic etc , but that in itself is s a lovely drive .
Really peaceful site , with the peace only broken by geese flying above. Fish and chip van that comes around served lovely fish and chips which we had. Would definitely stay here again , not far form the Scottish border and close to enough by car to most other areas .
Our only concern was that there was no barrier on the site so anyone can come and go , one evening , there was a very suspect group of lads driving the wrong way round the one way system in an Audi , maybe nothing , but would prefer a barrier system
A hidden gem that needs to stay hidden
What a wonderful little site! We were recommended to go here by friends, and spent a too short single night en route elsewhere. We had enough time to experience the peace and quiet, the wonderful qualty fo the facilities, and the proximity to nature that the site offers. We will defiinitely visit again, and use it to explore the Cheviots.
Absolutely the cleanest best maintained CMHC site we’ve stayed at!
We have just spent 5 nights at River Breamish. Our second stay after a good few years. Whenever we arrived at the site it was obvious that the wardens take great pride in looking after the site. It was absolutely spotless and extremely well maintained and a credit to them both. The layout of the site is lovely. Some nice little areas with good sized pitches and plenty water/ waste/ chemical waste areas within easy reach. Nice onsite dog walk. Just have to be aware of the possibility of coming across the odd adder however on this particular stay we didn’t see any. We visited Bamburgh, Seahouses, Alnwick, and drove for over an hour to the Beamish living museum near Newcastle but it’s a great full day out and dog friendly. Definitely recommend this site. There’s no play area for kids so maybe not every young families cup of tea.
Wonderful location
We've just enjoyed 4 nights staying at River Breamish. A beautiful location managed by a fantastic team that keeps the site immaculately clean. And a wonderful welcome at the beginning too. We will, without doubt, return.
One to go back to
Just had 2 nights at River Breamish on our journey homeward and wish we could have stayed longer....
I'm not one for writing reviews,,,, normally .....but for this one I'll make the effort.
The site is a testament to it's staff, I'll go as far to say it's the most well kept one we've visited....The staff take great pride in their work and it shows....We had a lovely welcome at reception and being a 9m American we're very kindly assisted onto our pitch....
The facilities are top notch, modern and spotlessly clean, the site is extremely well thought out and there's plenty of space between each perfectly level pitch....
I'd say it's probably not the best place for kids, you'll have to keep them entertained....We're not "anti kid" btw, we have 5 GK's so we know they can get bored when we're on our jollies.....
That aside, If you like a peaceful and relaxed few days, the wind whistling in the trees, an exceptional dog walk and the best the club has to offer then yes, this is the place.
Looking forward to our return and thanks for having us.
You won't find a better site than this!
Great site. Facilities are excellent. We visited without our kids and suspect that they might have been a bit bored as there is nothing for children, but it makes for a lovely calm quite site!
All areas were spotlessly clean. The wardens/cleaning staff are clearly diligent and take pride in the site. It is head and shoulders the best maintained site we have ever visited. Toilets and showers were lovely and clean.
Great facilities, friendly staff, lovely relaxed quite location with beautiful walks around the lakes and alongside the river. Located in the middle of Northumberland so great for visiting across the county. Garage shop down the road is particularly well stocked, so you can get everything you could possibly need there.
We stayed 12 nights and will absolutely be returning (would go back tomorrow if we could!).
