An ideal location for exploring Welsh countryside and magnificent canal and rail engineering by bike or foot

This pleasant tiered site is adjacent to a small town with good facilities and access to major roads. You can easily walk to Chirk Castle (NT) and along the nearby canal and over the impressive aquaduct. Even more exciting if a train goes across the adjacent viaduct at the same time. There is also a small canal basin and tunnel. The onsite facilities block has been criticised by some as in need of an update, but in fact the current arrangement of having the showers in a separate block from the toilets etc can be an advantage, especially if you are queuing. It was great to wake and find the motorhome surrounded by baby rabbits in the morning, and the visit by the local bobbies on their mountain bikes was a reassuring gesture (I think!). All in all a very pleasant experience.

Struggling with the logic (or lack of it).

We've been to LM's several times & really enjoy the site & the surrounding area. However on our recent visit I struggled to understand the sites approach & logic being implemented under the guise of logic in relation to Covid. All the showers in the men's toilet block were locked, leaving only 2 showers in a separate annex to use, totally inadequate give the size of the site (which was packed). I understand it the same for the women. Wrist band system was evident however, it clearly didn't work as bands often on the pegs but the showers/toilets unoccupied (yes, this is down to the members). When the main services were being cleaned there was no toilet contingency for those 'emergencies' or desperate requirements. When asked why the disabled loo could not be used, Covid was blamed again. However, when I visited the shop to purchase a much needed Ice cream (weather very hot) my attempt to pay contactless was rebuked & an insistence of 'cash only' advised. Surprising seeing they try to portray an image of safety around Covid. Needless to say, the ice cream was returned to the fridge as currently I don't carry cash as I don't want to risk passing on any virus should I be unfortunate enough to come into contact with it. Seems like Covid safety is there when it suits them.

My first visit

This is a sheltered site about a half mile walk from the village and close to Chirk Castle estate. I noted an odd smell (like malt) when booking in and the warden advised me it was either the wood processing factory or the Cadbury’s chocolate factory. Be aware that the wood processing factory works 24/7 and the noise from it is like traffic roar from a motorway. We were in the middle of COVID-19 lockdown when I visited and members were struggling with the concept of rubber bands on hooks when you went in to the toilet blocks. Or they were deliberately ignoring it. I admired the patience of the motorhome driver who waited as I filled my tank with fresh water. It took an age with low pressure the culprit. The walks to town are pleasant but I’m afraid there are not many positive comments one can make about Chirk. The railway station is beautifully cared for by a volunteer group and the aqueduct and viaduct with canal tunnel make for an interesting walk. Try elsewhere for interesting destinations of which there are many. Planning permission is in for a major overhaul of this site.

What a beautiful site

We visited Chirk during a rare heatwave and how beautiful did the site look in bright sunshine, and the dappled shade given by the many tall trees was a welcome relief. The wardens are very welcoming and helpful, and keep a very tidy and pretty site. The very many bunnies hopping out from the woods help with maintaining the grassy areas. The pitches are very spacious and level. For the first time ever we had no need to use our levellers. The peace of the site is a little spoiled by the relentless 24 hour drone of the nearby Cadbury factory, plus the sweet smell that sometimes pervades the air, but if you can ‘tune out’ it isn’t a problem. The only other noise is human, ill-disciplined yapping/barking dogs (same as on all sites), crows, other birds, and owls. The facilities are a little dated, but clean and well maintained. The water pressure is dire and so showering was a lengthy process as was filling water containers. We found TV reception to be excellent. From time to time our mobile reception dropped out. The site is well placed to visit National Trust’s Chirk Castle - an uphill stroll through lovely grounds, with sheep roaming freely. Also within strolling distance is the Llangollen canal with its many canal boats. We loved our stay here, and will be back. For us, it was perfect, and seen in the most beautiful sunshine.

Disappointed

This site is in desperate need of a refurbishment, the hard standing pitches are unrecognisable. I am fullly aware of the COVID guidelines and completely agree that some facilities have to be closed , but only 3 toilets, and 2 showers in the annex was definitely not enough for a full site, another 2 showers each end in the main block could have been used, we have stayed on smaller sites with more opened than here. I am also amazed at the lack of ground work that wasn’t done, only twice during our stay did we here any ground equipment being used, the staff seemed to spend most of their time in the office, and how some members were disregarding the band system, or just couldn’t get the hang of it was beyond me !!! Don’t think we will come again unless some changes are made.

Really good facilities.

Probably the best site I've visited this year in terms of the quality of the facilities and the lovely setting. We called in on the way back home from Snowdonia as it enabled us to do Pistyll Rhaeadr and The Berwyns with minimal extra mileage. The walks round the grounds of Chirk Castle and the river, aqueduct and canal tow-path were a pleasant bonus but there's not a lot more of interest for me in the area which would require a stay for more than 1 or 2 nights in the future. Be warned! Should you be one of those who spends all their time on social media you're in for disappointment, the wi-fi reception here is pretty poor.

Gorgeous site

Everything about this site has already been said it's beautiful and quiet. Our gripe is with the inconsistent rule application regarding covid. They have a main shower block and an annex, only the annex is open for showers! None are available in the main block. No bins are with the water points so it's a trek to the shower block!. We have been at various sites over the past month and only this site has no bins at water points and massive restrictions on showers available. Whilst we accept there has to be restrictions, it's the inconsistency throughout the network that is really frustrating. Having said all that, without the covid restrictions this site is just lovely and we enjoy coming.

Landscape variety

Here for brief stopover, so comments only on the interesting countryside site. The usual club high standards with added cheerful, friendly welcome, the pitches among the trees spread around different areas at different levels, giving choice of varied outlooks and the number of rabbits at work! Fellow motorhomers, beware water pressure at our service point low. So can take a while to fill. And the grey waste still via the outdated lift-a-lid sort. One negative is that, as at more sites these days, rubbish bins no longer provided at service points. Be ready for coping with bags of the different sorts in your confined space - or go for a long walk to the skip-like bins at the loo block. Understandable as it's one less chore for wardens extra busy with Covid requirements.

Perfect location

This site was a real eye opener for us as new members of the CAMC. The location was perfect and we spent 4 very peaceful days here cycling, walking and visiting local attractions. Chirk village is 15 minutes walk away , with plenty of dining/shopping/drinking opportunities, and we ate out one evening in The Courtyard and had coffee one morning. The site is peaceful and spotlessly clean. Lovely welcome from the staff on arrival and such colourful flower baskets festooned the fences and reception. The shower block does need updating but was exceptionally clean and had plenty of hot water so just an observation really. We had a spacious hardstanding pitch near the exit gate so very handy for clean water and grey and chemical waste disposal . Overall a very happy experience. Chirk castle well worth a visit too and the gardens are beautiful (National Trust property)
