A little haven

We hadn't intended visiting this site but we were driven inland from a north west coastal tour by heavy rain and gales that were the strongest we'd encountered for years. So driving to Kinlochewe even we were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful scenery despite the rain and low cloud. It was the end of September so we had fingers crossed that the midge season had ended as reviews for the site often mentioned that they were problematic. Midges don't seem to always understand that beginning of June to end of September is their alloted eating time and not before or after. However despite an even bigger storm predicted for the night of our arrival at Kinlochewe (hence our retreat inland), the usual “lull” of calm and rain before a storm didn't mean we were eaten alive by midges. Thank heavens this year they seemed to have retired from their human feasting a little earlier. The site is right in the middle of the small village of Kinlochewe which is very handy for using the local amenities. There is a small hotel/pub, a shop/post office, a petrol station/shop and an excellent quirky cafe called The Whistle Stop Cafe where we ate a couple of times. The site itself is nicely laid out and afforded us more shelter than any on the coast could have done, although that night was still a very stormy one indeed. The wardens were simply excellent. I always think they have a very difficult task and need a sense of humour and excellent interpersonal skills to do the job well. When we arrived I was given a cheery greeting from Norrie who was striding purposefully across to the laundry with a hammer in hand. When I queried him, he simply said the tumble drier had broken and he was going to fix it. My silent but quizzical expression prompted a further explanation from him that first he was going to threaten it back into use, and if that didn't work the hammer gave him a second albeit more brutal option. We never did find out which approach worked. The toilet and shower blocks were in excellent condition, they looked as if they had recently been refurbished and were kept scrupulously clean and warm. The whole site is level and set out on a gravel which drains well (a pleasant change from the mud bath we left the day before on the coast). The minimum standard that we have all come to expect from Caravan Club (CC) sites is refreshing and welcoming when we come to use them. We probably use private sites about 75% of the time, purely because there are more of them in the areas we visit, but so many times with those you pay a lot more than the CC club sites for greatly inferior facilities, even taking into account the CC membership fee. The day we left Kinlochewe calm had returned to the north west of Scotland and the journey back to the west coast.

Loved it - will be back - but plan ahead

First of all this site is going back to nature - its in the middle of a Highland park and the surroundings and edging reflects that - this is not a manicured site, another mile and it would be half way up a mountain. Having said that thats why you go there. So its all hard standing, great and spotless facilities and the warm welcome that you always get from the majority of wardens. - Very helpful with what on etc. Point 1 fill up in Inverness and you'll have no worries with fuel, having said that theres a petrol station thats next door and despite the stations website its open Sat afternoon and Sunday. Point 2 Food - theres a small store and the petrol station sell the basics but expect to pay for them - so plan ahead Point 3 - a grocery van visits Tuesday and Friday - its a tardis and has virtually everything butcher meat, veg, eggs, bread and loads more!! Must dos Applecross and the road to it but make sure you come from the Toridon end and out view Sheildaig. Beinn Eighe visitor centre(despite a total lack of welcome from the staff). Nature and the scenery - its everywhere starting on your pitch just look out. The road in - as you drive the last three miles into Kinlochewe be prepared to gasp at the view - superlatives just run out when you are here. The Whistl Stop Cafe in Kinlochewe - not the cheapest but fab home made food, scones, orange and raspberrry jam - oh yes that hits the spot. Coast coffee in Gairloch againgreat homemade soup and bread. Unless your kids are outdoor types theres nothing to do for them well not for 60 miles. was there late september/October and the midges where not a great problem. So plan ahead and enjoy the view

Depressing

We found this site to be very sad. dark grey gravel it felt like a car park. Hedges untrimmed and grass 3ft high around the hedges. Toilet block and showers were fine and it was clean but we could not wait to leave, will not return.

Lovely site

First impressions of this site do not disappoint.  It's tucked away in the middle of nowhere with just 3 main roads in/out.  The site is set out in bays and the one we chose (first small bay on the right) became a tricky manoeuvre to get the caravan in.  After trying to reverse into the narrow entrance we gave up, unhooked the van and pushed it into place (no motor mover).  Of course, at the end of our stay we then had to shuffle around to get it out again!  There are bigger bays to choose from, we just like less neighbours.  Anyway other than that, the facilities are well kept.  We found shopping for supplies a little problematic.  The local shops just do the very basics. The nearest supermarket we found is at Gairloch and even then it's not great so if you're planning a trip here take plenty of supplies with you.  We took a day trip to Applecross which is absolutely stunning and a must do for anyone in the area.  The local hotel is good for a meal and staff are very friendly.  Taking everything into consideration we would definitely go back to this site, just with more food on board.

Beautiful

Only had one night on this site, the location is fabulous with amazing mountain views and stunning at sunrise with the light reflecting on the face of the mountains. The facilities were spotless as was the whole site, the relief warden was constantly working to keep the place in tip top condition. We did visit the local hotel for a drink but were very underwhelmed by it. We will certainly be covming back again. Thank you for making this such a pleasant place to stay.

feast for midges

We stayed for 11 nights and pitched on a site looking at the beautiful mountains and witnessed some lovely sunsets while there.  The village has everything you need a small shop and a garage. Victoria falls and a gorge with a suspension bridge within a short drive.  The midges were relentless although we used sss from Avon which they didn't seem to like but if forgotten or parts missed they had a feast! The wardens were very friendly and helpful. Gairloch is within a 20 min drive and has a few more facilities. Easy enough to find and we would have no hesitation returning.

Almost the back of beyond

Great little site, slightly unusually laid out for a CC site, but not in a negative way. Modern wash block was small but I never had to queue – the site was just over half full. Good for a stop over if you are touring, but warrants a few days as Ben Eighe and the Torridon mountain range are must see places in my opinion.

Walked from site to the top of Slioch and back, a gruelling 8 hour trek, but worth it as the views and waterfalls enroute were spectacular.

Had a drive out to Gairloch and Poolewe and got my bike out for a spin around some of the more remote coastal areas. Weather was fab, which of course always helps.

Kinlochewe has a shop, café, pub restaurant and petrol station, so it is not quite the back of beyond. The nearest major supermarket however is 35 miles away. Be warned the midge were a big nuisance in the mornings and evenings.

There is no wifi, the tv channels from the EHU are minimal and the Vodafone signal not brilliant. Great, if you want to get away from it all for a few days.

16 August 2016: Heatwave!

What a wonderful site. All facilities spotlessly clean, staff very friendly and knowledgeable, and the site was beautifully laid out and maintained. The views of Ben Eighe were stunning and we walked down to Loch Maree one day and enjoyed the peace, tranquility and sheer drama of the landscape. We even saw a golden eagle soaring high above the site on the day when the temperature reached 27 degrees.  The local shops and pub are very close and made us very welcome. All in all, a delightful holiday venue. We shall be back.

Wind & Wuthering

Friendly and helpful wardens on this lovely well kept and clean site. The toilet block was spotless as were the other facilities. Good location for walks from the site, exploring the local area or just as a stopover when touring Western Scotland. If cash is needed and the local post office is closed there is no cash machine in the immediate area. The midges can be a nuisance, so go prepared or go earlier in the season, if possible. However, the site shop stocks midge repellent, nets and citronella candles. We would definitely use this site again.

Friendly & Peaceful

Lovely site in picturesque setting. Norrie & Laura were great wardens, and can't forget on Beth their dog. Lovely walks near the campsite and a good starting point for touring the Highlands by car. The site facilities were clean and tidy and the nearby Whistle Stop Cafe was a great bonus if you don't want to cook. Will definitely be back but might try to avoid the midge season!
