Good for families

Lovely site however not the warmest of welcomes.

Having recently returned from a four day stay at the Hawes Club site we wanted to take the opportunity to share our review. The site is in an ideal location within walking distance of Hawes which has many interesting shops, plenty places to eat. The surrounding area has lots to offer walkers, cyclists and anyone just wanting to enjoy the beautiful scenery. The site is well presented and the facilities were very clean despite the inclement weather. The pitches are well spaced and again very tidy. You certainly need steel pegs if putting up an awning but that is highlighted on the site information on line and in the handbook. We arrived at the site 25 minutes before the official arrival time and parked in the long driveway to the site in front of a temporary sign advising new arrivals where to wait. The office was closed and had a sign advising that it was closed due to toilet cleaning and that it would reopen at 11:45. We took the opportunity to walk around the site to look at the available pitches. As we walked back to the office we were approached by one of the wardens who asked us in a very abrupt manner could he help us. We answered that we were new arrivals and were waiting for the office to open. He then went on to ask did we know the earliest arrival time ,somewhat stunned we replied yes we did but it was not always easy to time arrivals. We were then advised “that’s what sat navs are for” and “that if 68 caravaners all took it upon themselves to arrive half an early the whole of the town would congested and the police would be involved.” Whilst we did not argue at the time surely in the unlikely event that 68 units arrived at 12:00 the ensuing chaos would be the same! As our faces became somewhat set he did assure us that he told everyone who arrived early the same thing. We are fairly sure that we did not cause any inconvenience to anyone but if early arrival is such a problem then surely there needs to be a note in the site information to that effect. Certainly the way the information is delivered needs to be reviewed as it made for less than a warm welcome to Yorkshire. Later in our stay we had a minor medical emergency but did not feel comfortable seeking any help or advice from the wardens. We would not like to put off anyone off staying at this otherwise lovely site....just don’t arrive early.

25 minutes early is pushing it I think and I'm not entirely surprised at the warden's reaction. Although I think the club could adopt more flexible arrival/departure arrangements at sites where the access is very easy, from memory I don't think Hawes qualifies as such. So the answer is to park up somewhere en route, frustrating though it will doubtless be to watch other units go past (as happened to us at Putts Corner last week!)

Why does it need a note to advise of the arrival time it is quite clearly stated that arr time is 1200hrs,we were there two weeks ago and the attitude of the site staff was not at all as you describe, but then we only have your "review"to go on if it has changed?I do know that the office is closed for the facilities to be cleaned, and also did note one day that the lane was full of early arrivals,"waiting?for the staff to finish cleaning up  the facilities surprised

I’m not surprised the warden challenged you when you walked around the site. He was doing his job in safeguarding people’s units and possessions from intruders.

As for arriving nearly half an hour early, there’s no excuse. The rule is there for a reason and applies to everyone. You could have obstructed the exit for those leaving and generally caused mayhem in your belief that the rule did not apply to you.

Just a little extra as Tinwheeler noted the warden was right to challenge you when "wandering?"round the site,  do not think it unusual for that site to have all the facilities in need of a key to access?undecided

And our sat nav gives a pretty accurate journey  and arrival at destination timesurprised

As TW and JVB noted; it is not acceptable to simply wander around site and naturally the warden challenged. He was doing his job

I wholeheartedly agree with the first reviewer, as we had a similar experience on arrival today. We parked in the ‘late arrivals’ bay, waiting for the reception to open. When we checked in, we were greeted by an aggressive warden, who informed us of the check-in time and the questioned why we had parked in the ‘late arrivals’ bay. There was no reasoning with this warden - she was rude and confrontational. Yes rules are there to be applied but surely, common sense must prevail? We had driven from the SW, over 300 miles so being exact with timings is not easy, even with a Satnav. Clearly at 11 am, the ‘late arrival’ bay would not be in demand, hence our decision to use it. It is not always what is said, but the way in which it is said. A very upsetting start to our holiday, and we will be submitting an official complaint. The warden in question would benefit from customer service training.

Elogeo, like the other reviewer, you arrived early. The arrival time is set so that you do not obstruct people who may be leaving the site. See my earlier post. 11am is really pushing the boundaries and you cannot know what plans the site staff may have had for the LA area that morning.

How come I can travel 300 miles from the south west and not arrive early but you find it difficult? If you’re early stop for a while in a service area or lay-by. Did you not think to ring the site and ask if it was OK to roll up early?

The wardens have my sympathy as they must be sick of people arriving early and clogging up site entrances. Arriving is arriving no matter where you park your outfit.

Sorry to say this but I feel both you and the earlier writer are well out of order.

Why oh why do folk who arrive - an hour early now - expect a cheery welcome from the wardens?  There is no excuse for it - just park up en route - if you really can't wait and you know you're ahead of schedule at least phone up to see what the situation is. Sometimes the wardens will invite you in anyway, which is a little bonus, sometimes they'll say no which you just have to accept. But whatever,  don't assume you can just roll up early and sit waiting on the starting grid.

P. S. Maybe the wardens should be "submitting an official complaint" about a member with such flagrant disregard for the rules!.

Common sense seems to be something that you lack. To arrive 10 mins early might be considered a miscalculation, maybe even 15 minutes if you were hoping for a convenient layby and non were available. To arrive an hour early without prior agreement is simply taking the Mick. (I am choosing my words to be polite!).
