First visit

This was our first visit here bit of delay arriving because of lorry fire on M6 where we sat for 3 hours but was very surprised when we eventually arrived. The site initially looked small but wardens very friendly and helpful and we we found an excellent pitch with a view of the harbour. Well looked after site, toilets a bit dated but clean. Very relaxing and quiet, good food at the pub and home made ice cream at the hive. We will be back The best warden we have met in all our years of caravaning who couldn’t do enough for you

Glorious Garlieston

Just had a relaxing three day break at this lovely site. Our pitch overlooking the harbour was wonderful. This site is a real gem.

Ideal Location

This site has one of the most attractive locations on the Club’s network. We were pitched on the harbour side with wonderful views of the sea over 6 days of brilliant weather. The local area is tourist heaven with picturesque places to walk, cycle or drive. The Harbour Inn, just 100 metres from the site gate, serves its own excellent Harbour Gold real ale and reasonable quality pub food at good prices. Now for the downside. The toilet facilities, while kept clean, are in desperate need of renovation. Nor are just 2 male and 2 female showers for 46 caravans an adequate provision. It looks like the harbour side pitches have been recently ‘adjusted’ to get a few more in with the result that they are somewhat cramped. There are supposed to be small ‘grassed’ areas between the hard standings but some of these have been left like building sites with loose stones, rocks and weeds. Not acceptable CAMC! The lack of space in these areas and the gravel pitches mean that a motor mover is advisable to be able to get a caravan in and out. In summary, an outstanding location let down by poor management of the opportunities available.

Garlieston - Idyllic site by the sea, quiet quiet and more quiet

Fabulous quiet site for those members who enjoy quiet sites with good walks and great scenery. Lets be honest unless you are the fit family theres nothing for kids - Seaside and a play park up the road. Village itself has a pub and restaurant/new cafe, eaterie and a diesel only garage that stocks essentials Nearest mini supermarket is in Wigton about 7.5 mls away, but its well stocked. We're just back from 12 nights - completely dry and three days of 27 degs, stayed in the walled garden which we find quieter and more secluded than the seafront side. Great friendly warden in Judith and Edgar who warmly welcomed and were always up for a wee chat - very helpful folks who work hard to keep the high standards across the site. Only downside is the motorhome service point which for some bizarre reason has been placed in the walled garden and due to the nature of the area causes backlogs and traffic issues that mean some folks can be unable to get out till either on or off site whilst Mhomes are being serviced Temporary downside is wifi - even the hotspot is useless - that plus if your are on EE you will be struggling - or maybe both those are benefits.....

Having visited this site many times in the last 3years, approximately 30 visits for long weekends. We can honestly say that this site rates up there with the very best. Not only are Edgar and Judith a delight, they are extremely efficient, hard working and have time for a chat to anyone giving them the benefit of their local knowledge and being helpful beyond expectations. To conclude I would challenge anyone to say that they didn’t enjoy their stay. Edgar puts my to shame as he keeps a lawn on site and I have grass in my garden. The facilities are spotless even although could do with updating, but they are extremely functional and the showers are lovely and hot. I cannot recommend this site strongly enough.

Amazing considerate wardens

Judith and Edgar are the kindest most considerate wardens we have met . Our car broke down on approach to the site Good Friday. They were both sympathetic and extremely helpful. We were relayed back by local garage to Co Durham after extending our stay till Tuesday. We cannot thank them enough they were amazing. Site is wonderful in a fabulous location such a gem we would highly recommend it.

A little gem -

We stayed here 3 nights. We were greeted by a lovely lady in the reception and quickly set up on a pitch overlooking the bay, watching the wading birds with a cup of tea. After our long days walking and cycling, the lovely hot powerful showers were superb. The facilities albeit a little dated were beautifully clean and you could see the attention to detail given to them and the site overall, a lovely area to explore, a quiet little fishing town, would fully recommend, this lovely little gem.

Lovely site with very friendly and helpful managers

Judith and Edgar were really friendly and extremely helpful at providing local information. The site is clean and spacious. It was almost completely full while we were there over Easter weekend, but was still quiet and peaceful. The pitches are well marked - ours was overlooking the sea (when the tide was in, mud otherwise!) with a fantastic view.

Wonderful peaceful place

We have just spent 4 days here enjoying the wonderful views and the peace and quiet. The other users were friendly and the staff were exceptionally helpful. I found the facilities spotless and although small and perhaps dated they were more than adequate and I never had to queue. Occasionally there was a little whiff from the water treatment works, but it was very minor. I can’t comment on wi fi as I don’t use it on holiday. There was a good 4G signal. The scenery is spectacular and the variety of birds at low tide was amazing, a stroll along the coastal path was not too difficult and I am 80% sure I saw a sea otter. My field glasses were back in the van! Our pitch was on the harbour wall which gave us wonderful views but as a non awning pitch was a little small as we were able to park ‘nose first’ for the view, our door was at the same side as our neighbours who had reversed their motor home in, so we were sharing the same bit of grass. They were lovely people though so it wasn’t too intrusive. Food at the Harbour pub was delicious, the ‘Hive’ cafe did lovely ice cream and the local garage/shop had everything we needed. For us, it was a perfect break.

a gem

This site is a gem. There are three main things it has going for it: (1) Galloway is a beautiful and quiet place for a holiday, with lots to do, (2) the site's situation in the village, next to the bay, and close to the harbour and also sandy beaches, and (3) the fantastic wardens, Edgar and Judith, who are helpful in every way. Places worth visiting close by include Isle of Whithorn (a “must see” village), Whithorn with its museum and priory, and Wigtown. All with free motorhome parking. Further afield is Stranraer, which also has large carparks with plenty of space for motorhomes (free) overlooking the marina, next to Agnew Park, and also a short walk from the town centre. Another “must see” place is Glenwhan Gardens. They are the most magical and beautiful gardens I have ever visited. Reasonable mobility is required to explore them properly. (Tip: allow longer than you might expect for your visit. On a lovely day it can be hard to tear yourself away.) Edgar and Judith who live quite locally are happy to recommend many other places to visit and are hugely helpful and knowledgeable. I found Garlieston to be a brilliant base for road cycling. Even the A roads are quiet, and the B roads even more so. With generally good road surfaces. I especially recommend for a short ride (much longer rides are available) to Isle of Whithorn, returning via Whithorn. I found running from the site less than ideal. The coastal path running south towards Isle of Whithorn is better than the path running north along the coast and through the woods. A lovely offroad run is from Isle of Whithorn on springy short turf with amazing sea views south to Burrow Head. (This path is signposted from Isle of Whithorn.) I also recommend Stranraer parkrun due to being especially friendly with great views over the sea. The site itself is somewhat quirky (it's arranged as two separate sites) and the toilet block is dated. But perfectly adequate and kept spotless, as is the whole site, by the hard-working wardens. Our recent break in Galloway was 43 years after our previous holiday there. Despite the long journey from home we can't wait for the next.
