In fairness to the site the conditions we encountered were out of the control of the site.
Exeter racecourse also operates as a conference venue and during our stay the racecourse hosted a corporate event. Part of this was a tent next to the campsite which for a day and 3 nights was the source of a physical assault from a P.A. system playing (allegedly) music at maximum overload. The noise was of such a level that the entire van and contents were vibrating to the point of causing damage to a window hinge which the started to allow rainwater in (since repaired with lots of silicone).... there is clearly scope for improvement in the quality and quantity of information exchange between the racecourse and the site. Perhaps advance notice of 'disruptive' events should be uploaded to the booking computer so that members who have booked well in advance (like me) could get a 'you may wish to review your booking dates' e-mail....
Stayed seven nights, after end of school Easter holidays. Never got more than half full, even at weekend. Wardens very friendly and helpful. Site is very spacious and some good views over surrounding countryside. Tower/shower facilities very clean, though not quite up to normal club standards - no modesty cubicles, and no toilet available when the block is being cleaned. Limited options for walks offsite, though the extensive racecourse is great to explore and compensates a bit. No bus service direct to Exeter, but Matford Park and Ride is easy to drive to and shuttle bus service into Exeter is good. Haldon Forest Diner looked promising, but as we were out every day we never used it as it closes at 6pm.
Dreadful stay! Not able to have a shower or hair washing the disabled facilities were abysmal! I was told that the shower would work held over the toilet!! Was I expected to sit on the floor? I had tried sitting on the shower seat but there was barely a trickle! No satisfaction from the club whatsoever!
This site is more open and spacious than the average caravan club site, which we find preferable. It is also easy to get to and a good base camp for daily excursions into the rest of Devon. Would also recommend the Haldon Forest diner; it is a short walk through the racecourse and has an extensive menu, all reasonably priced. The wardens are welcoming and helpful. If you like a day at the races the racecourse facilities are very good. The campsite facilities are kept very clean but could do with upgrading as they are not large enough for the size of site. Also when all showers are in use it is difficult to regulate the water temperature (the water tends to get very hot). There is traffic noise from the busy A38 but that doesn't bother us too much. Overall though we really enjoy our stays at this site.
We have used this site as a convenient stop over site for the West Country. We tend to arrive late at night and make use of the Late Night Arrivals area.
It is unfortunate that the LNA is effectively a lorry park outside of the site perimeter. Whilst it suits our purposes, it would benefit from electrical hook up and water facilities at least, of which there are neither. The price is too much for what it is, however we will use due to convenience.
The warden couple however are lovely and always very welcoming.
The site needs investment really from the Caravan Club, as this is lacking.
Second visit. Nice open site, open views, watching stars and shooting stars one night. Toiletblock/showers working adequately but all a bit tired, still very clean and does the job. Some road noise, but despite that still a peaceful relaxed site. Easy access, friendly warden. Nice walks straight from site.
Ideal campsite if you are into your horse racing. We camped for one night on the day of the races (evening race).
The camp site is in the middle of the race track and we had a plot close to the track. During the races we would walk to the fence right by the finish line were you can see and feel the horses run past...... There was a big lorry with a big screen showing the race which you could stand and watch the whole race whilst the horses were out of sight.
This was all included in the camping price. You can not get into the main race arena without buying a tick for the event, but you can bet online via your smart phone o join in the fun as there is a good 4G signal.
I would definitely go back again, especially on race day. If it is a daytime race, you would be better off booking 2 days the day before and the day of the race as you can not get on camp till 12:00 so with an early race it would be busy.
Stayed on a no-electric pitch en-route to Cornwall. A very basic site with reasonable facilities block. Quite exposed to the weather and the grass pitches were very uneven which made it very difficult to level a motorhome. A good Fish & Chip van was on site for Friday night.
Would have expected better from a "club" site.
Last two weeks in July 2018 had a very relaxing stay, very quiet, spotless facilities, less than ten minutes to Matford P&R by car to Exeter centre, could be difficult at this P&R for Motorhomes can get quite full, bus stop also o/s racecourse to Exeter warden will explain.
