Our dogs rated Exeter as 5 Paws and waggy tails, they love it and so do we. Great site for walking, views, wildlife and it is easy to get the bus into Exeter. The Wardens gave us a friendly welcome and quickly sorted our voucher, always had time for a chat and were out and about the site. They hadn't been here long. I don't understand the negative reviews, Exeter is good value, like camping in the 1980s😆We'll be back.
Unfriendly welcome
We had booked in here for 1 night before a ferry crossing in Plymouth. We originally thought we would get there by 3 to 4 o’clock but met horrendous flooding conditions on the 250 mile journey. This held us up and we explained this to the warden when she rang. We said we would try to get there for 6 pm and actually arrived at 5.55pm. Finding she had shut the gates anyway. I rang and asked to be let in and explained id sort it in the morning as we had the free night from the club !!! She told me they don’t do that here and wanted full payment, most annoyed at having to wait up until 6.15pm .
I rang the club the next morning to check if they should honour the free night and yes they should ! I went back to reception and asked again and was told the computer wouldn’t accept it and to use it at another site. Very useful especially as I was going to Spain until November!!!!!
Worth visiting for more than one night
Recently spent 6 nights here. I’m surprised at the negative reviews this site has on the CAMC website. We enjoy staying here. The facilities are not up to the usual CAMC standard but we feel the price reflects this. Shower block is very old but kept spotlessly clean with plenty of hot water for a hot powerful shower.
The site is spacious with an open area with a mixture of grass and hardstanding pitches, and a more secluded grassy area amongst trees. We prefer this area which feels more like a CL.
Currently there is only one chemical disposal point for the entire site, but didn’t seem to be causing a problem.
It is possible to walk around the racecourse on a smooth concrete path - an enjoyable walk of about 2 miles. On Sundays there is a huge car boot sale which is well worth a look. Cars queue up to access it. Worth remembering if you plan on arriving on a Sunday.
On the other side of the A38 there is a garage/shop and fast food outlets. These can be accessed by walking under a bridge so not a problem getting there.
The site is great for walking and cycling in the Haldon Forest a mile from the site. Nearby there is excellent cycling on the Exe Estuary Trail. Exeter can be accessed via a bus trip or driving into the city or Park and Ride.
Good for a stopover on route further down south but plenty of attractions in the area - National Trust properties and seaside resorts such as Dawlish. I really hope CAMC don’t close this one. Maybe it could do with some investment but as the Club don’t own the site I suspect there is a reluctantance to invest in it.
We will no doubt enjoy further stays there in the future.
Enjoyable stay at Exeter
We really enjoyed our stay. The staff were friendly and helpful. Facilities are kept very clean. Pitches are a good size with plenty of space between them. The site is excellent as a base for exploring the area with several towns and villages in easy travel distance. Good for cycling, we did the Exe estuary trail by travelling to towns on the trail. There are also trails in the forest next to the site. For exploring Exeter, there is a bus stop near the garage on the opposite side of the dual carriageway. There is a sharp turn from the south off the dual carriageway to get to the site.
Refurb or Close this site
This site could do with a refurb,/rethink!.. Lots of potholes in the roads and the site roads are narrow. With the new optional way of siting units, it is possible for units to be very close to the unit on the other side of the 'road'; 2 x chemical disposal points out of order (--- everyone had to use the point near the motorhome emptying point); the Service Points are only really places to fill up water - only one waste-water emptying point. A Serivice Point at Exeter is not the same as a Service Point on other CAMC sites - site map ought to reflect tbis difference. Poor system for late arrivals... If the gate is locked you have to leave the car and caravan at the gate, walk up to reception, collect the information sheet pinned to the door and walk all the way back to the car! If you are less good at walking, it's a bit of a treck... and if you are a solo caravanner, your van and car could be left at the gate for 10 minutes or so while you do the walk.
Long overdue a total refurb.
What can I say thats good about it, firstly the staff are very friendly and the facilities are spotlessly clean.
Other than that the entire place wants bull dozing and starting again. The roads, once gravel, are now nothing more than mud and potholes with a sprinkling of stones and a large number of pitches are very sloped. You need wood blocks (wardens very helpful with providing some).
Toilet facilities are out of the 1960’s and would not be out of place in a prison camp.
One night stop over is about all it deserves, location is the only thing in its favour.
Come on CAMC put your hand in your pocket and spend some money on it.
Never again!
Overnight stopover 25/6 March 2024. Frankly, unless you are a racing enthusiast, stopovers are surely the only reason to stay here. We arrived halfway through a race in the pouring rain. The booking info from the Club is copious but failed to note that this was a race day. There are other race courses we’ve stayed at that would not take my booking on a race day. This site is exposed, has many puddles in the rain and has a mediocre standard of facilities. In my opinion the wiring of the hand drier in the boys’ room probably wouldn’t meet appropriate safety standards. At breakfast time there was a site-wide power outage. We left before it was fixed. One specific note: the turning off the expressway southbound is VERY tight and requires extra care and slow speed. Easy to overshoot too. Summary: we can find better.

Exeter Racecourse visit September 2023
We use this site as a stopover on our way to Cornwall. Even after wet weather in August (some puddles still existing on 2nd September) the Site Managers, most pleasant, had kept the grass cut and the site in a more than acceptable condition. Indeed, they were cutting the grass on a few pitches to ensure the site is well groomed.
A word of caution for visitors from the North, when going up the steep hill (A 38) and seeing the Racecourse site turning to the left, watch your speed as the turn comes on you quickly and it is a sharp turn.
Caravan show
This is our first time on this site.Fortunately there was a small caravan and camping show on that weekend We arrived and found the wardens to be very helpful, friendly and welcoming.Nice large hardstanding. The toilets are a little tired but so super clean and showers hot.Weather poor meant we couldn't take advantage of the walks
Good motorhome facilities for emptying tanks and elsan. It would have been nice if there could have been a few basics like bread and milk on site
The turn off the bypass for the racecourse from Exeter, gives you no real warning,so one to look out for
We will return :)

Perfect site
I have stayed here many times as this is an ideal location to visit and explore Devon.
As always the wardens are very helpful and full of good humour.
The facilities for waste and water are located in an ideal location with easy access plus away from pitches.
I look forward to returning here whenever I am in the area.
