This is not a site for you if you have children as there are little facilities for them. The site itself is located a fair distance from "civilisation" and a car journey is necessary to be able to reach places. That said, Armathwaite station is within walking distance for trips further afield, but do check the timetable as they are not that frequent.
The fact that the site is a minimal facility location appeals to us as we have perfectly adequate facilities on our unit so don't tend to use the toilet blocks of other sites. We have stayed here before and will do so again as there is just so much to explore on foot and further afield. Can recommend Housesteads Roman Fort near Haltwhistle.
I cannot add much to what others have already said, but I was disappointed not to see any red squirrels. Saw plenty of grey's and this is probably the reason why as they will out-compete the reds.
superb site very well maintained
First time we had ever stayed at this site, and it will certainly not be our last. The site has to be one of the best in the site network and beautifully maintained by the very enthusiatic and welcoming wardens. Everywhere is clean and tidy and there are superb walks through the trees (and fascinating grotto created bythe wardens) and onwards to the lakes and forest. Lots of walking and all accessible from the site. Apart from the woods for the dogs, there is also a dedicated dog run which is a securely fenced and gated field again very well maintained.
We only stayed 5 days, but shall be back next year even though it is a 400 mile drive for us.
Thank you wardens, your hard work is appreciated

Stopover on route to Scotland
No satellite coverage because of trees, no facilities, no yapping dogs or children. Just perfect peace and quiet. Went for a cycle around the local villages.
Site immaculate, wardens were excellent.
Too good a site for a stopover, my favourite site on this current road trip

Peace and tranquillity.
Stayed here with our caravan for 5 nights on a fully serviced pitch which was excellent; large grassed area to the rear and magnificent trees all around. Very friendly and helpful wardens and site maintained to high standard. Local walks but other attractions of this beautiful area require transport to access so perhaps less attractive for longer stay motorhomers.
Only ‘hot spot’ WiFi available at reception which is disappointing but shown as such in Sites Directory.
We enjoyed a day on the Carlisle to Settle railway joining at the local village of Armathwaite (limited free parking). Much better than driving 6 miles to Carlisle and paying for a day’s parking.
Peaceful and tranquil site set in beautiful surroundings.
We will return!
Just wonderful!!
This was the 5th site out of 6 on our tour this August and was my firm favourite. Fabulous welcome from the wardens who were informative, friendly and with a good sense of humour. The site is idyllic with a choice of more open or sheltered pitches. Great amount of space around our pitch and access to a woodland dog walk with our Labradors. There is also an enclosed dog area where they can run off lead.....just brilliant! Everywhere was really well kept with beautiful flowers covering the reception. Carlisle and it's facilities are a short drive away. Already booked to go back next year if I can wait that long!

Just the Ticket
We used this site as a stopover on the way to & on our return from Scotland. It was ideal & we'd have been happy to linger longer. The site is set in beautiful woodland with ample walks from the site through woods and around lakes - perfect for dogs & humans. The nearby village is a 20 minute walk away & has a welcoming pub. Had we had more time, we'd have certainly walked down to the river & enjoyed wandering along its banks.
The lack of a toilet block didn't affect us as always use the facilities in our motorhome.
The site staff members were unfailingly helpful and welcoming.
What a lovely site
Stayed here for 2 nights on our way home to Scotland from touring the Lake District. The site is beautiful it’s surrounded by trees and rhododendron bushes the wardens work constantly on maintains the grounds and the results are stunning it’s so peaceful with red squirrel and birdsong. It’s a non facilities site but fine as we use our own. The dog walk has a lovely little fairy trail. We walked about 10 minutes from site to the river which has a lovely walk into nearby villages. Would definitely return
SPENDID VISIT TO ENGLETHWAITE HALL
No toilet block but not required. Site well set out. Reception looked a pretty picture with all the flowers outside. Staff very friendly and helpful. Useful little shop for essentials and ice-cream. Little cabin to swop books, DVDs etc. Don't have a dog but good dog walking from site. Pitches good size and all very neat and tidy. Location was good - we went cycling round Bowness-on-Solway and a long walk along the banks of the River Eden (overgrown in parts) to the 'well-heeled' village of Wetheral was very enjoyable (whole day took about 5.5 hours). We also walked from site to The Greyhound Inn at Cotehill (took about half an hour) for a pint!, which also serves food though we did not see it. A Spotted Woodpecker came to feed at the bird feeder near plot 28. Cannot fault the site at all. Would definitely visit again.
A delightful site
For us, it was a one night stop on our return from Scotland (which I gather from some reviews is common practice). What an absolutely delightful site! Our welcome was warm and it is immediately evident that the site managers take great pride in their site. It is the best presented we have visited so far! And the fairy glen demonstrated a real sense of fun too. If only more sites benefited from so much care and attention.
A great spot for a peaceful break but also for some rest and recuperation, and a good walk with the dog during the break from our long journey.
Peaceful site away from it all
This has to be one of the best sites we’ve stayed at. The wardens were very friendly and the site was beautifully kept. Mobile phone signal was sparse but we got an ok tv signal. The site is very well laid out and has an excellent area for dog walking including an enclosed area where they can run free off the lead.
I wouldn’t recommend this site to families with children as there is no play area and there isn’t much nearby. We cycled the quiet lanes on our bikes and really enjoyed the tranquility. This is a great site for a stop over up to Scotland.
There is no toilet or shower block at this site which is why the price is very reasonable. I don’t understand people who book this site then complain in a site review about the lack of facilities. If you are self sufficient this site is a great one.
