Not for us!

just returned from this site, booked to visit relatives in the area. Disappointed with the site as there were a few issues which spoilt our break there:  1. Road noise. Continuous and intrusive. We know the area and realised that the A1 was adjacent, but still feel the site details underestimate the intrusion. 2. Noisy party. We complained to the Warden about the noise made by a party occupying a group of tents directly behind our pitch. This included noisy music and shouting until around 3.00am. The Warden told me they come every year for a birthday celebration and when I suggested that we were unwilling to go over and ask them to quieten down due to their drunken state, told me I should have done as they always offer anyone a drink! When I told the Warden I was more interested in going to sleep than drink at that time in the morning, she reluctantly said she would speak to the tent party about the noise if she saw them. Not good customer service! 3. Other campers. Astonished by the lady in the adjacent pitch who allowed her cat on a lead to use our hard standing as a litter tray right by our jockey wheel. 4. Path to Durham Please note that due to its very overgrown state, the path by the riverside to Durham is currently hazardous to use. We appreciate that not all of these problems are within the Clubs control. Out of peak season, we may have enjoyed our visit more.

Long time ago

We last visited this site a few years ago and was disappointed at the time that it has taken a while to return, pleasantly surprised, much improved, yes road noise is always in back ground, nothing club can do about that, wardens busy with grass cutting etc on arrival, very busy all weekend, yet all facilities kept clean, had no children with us so parked at opposite end to play park, all we could hear was children enjoying themselves without causing any disturbance, excellent location for trip into Durham or just for a overnight on your longer travels. Will definitely return as Durham is always a good place to visit.

Handy but noisy

This is the second time we have stayed here and we use it purely as a base from which to visit relatives. The site is small and very close to the A1M motorway and the noise is a constant reminder of that fact. Earplugs makes it bearable at night. Lots of (unsupervised) kids riding bikes the wrong way along the roads of the site. There was also a constant stream of people walking between the vans and across our pitch, despite there being site notices asking for courtesy in this respect.

Just off the motorway

Easy to find and good access to the park and ride which is over the motorway bridge and an easy walk to save worrying about parking. NB return pick up point is up and over the bridge and not obvious!!! ..........Smallish site and a bit crammed together in the middle. We spent the week there in the little alcoves to one side. ............Busy children play area which the children 5 +7 enjoyed............ Motorway hum 24/7 but not too intrusive to be annoying.

Weekend stay

Overall our stay was enjoyable.  This is the second time we've stayed here.  The road noise is always there in the background, but you 'tone it out' eventually. The only criticism we have following our stay is this:  after following specific instructions on how to park our van on the pitch, with our rear drivers side as close as possible to the marker, which we did no problems, put the awning up, no problems, came to park the vehicle alongside the caravan, we couldn't because the shrubs were overgrown.  No problem, we just parked to the front side without causing any obstructions to others. However, when we handed our fob into reception, hubby mentioned about the overgrown bushes which prevented us parking as per their instructions, suggesting that perhaps they could be trimmed, only to be bombarded with a long list of reasons as to why it wasn't done, as having minimum of six metres between pitches, pegs moved because of grass being fouled or spoiled, we should have moved our unit to get the vehicle in.... A simple thank you, we will look into it, I hope it didn't detract from your stay would have sufficed.   Not a complaint, just an observation, a little bit of customer care lacking.....

Well located site, friendly and well looked after

We have visited here a few times as its so convenient when travelling up and down the A1 but the place is worth stopping at for its own merit. Close to Durham, Park and ride is a manageable walk from the site. Supermarket and fuel close to the park and ride. Facilities always clean and well maintained. Durham itself is a smashing little city, lots to do, museums, cathedral, castle, good pubs and restaurants. There is some road noise from the A1 but after a short while it wasn't noticeable. Certainly will return

Excellent M1 stopover

Stayed at this site after travelling up the M1. It was not that noisey considering it is close to the motorway. The  large play area was well appreciated by our youngest two. We bought a half dozen free range eggs from the reception office which were good for breakfast. We will be staying here again in the future. As usual we experienced the usual high standard of toilet cleanliness at this club site.

Durham

A very handy site only a short distance from the motorway. Good facilities which were kept clean. Nice friendly wardens. Park and ride near the site which was reasonably priced and provided a good service. The Wi-Fi coverage is very poor not really fit for purpose.

Handy site for families

Very handy site for Durham either by car or park and ride and great days out for families. As mentioned by others, the motorway is close and can be heard but really didn't bother us. A good sized playground for toddlers to older children. Good toddler room. Friendly wardens. Pizza Van visits twice a week.

Space Invaders.

We had a very enjoyable time at this club site, apart from one aspect. We made the mistake of pitching opposite the sanitation block and suffered from people walking across our pitch, even when we were sat outside eating a meal or reading, people just cut across us on their way to the loo/showers. A dedicated pathway between two pitches would hopefully help eliminate some of this rude behaviour.
