good site

We have had two recent one night stays at Durham. First time for a couple of years. Starting with the best points - the wardens. Very welcoming, friendly and helpful. (Sadly not something which can be taken for granted.) The site is well maintained in every way. (The toilet block isn't the newest but it is fine and kept very clean.) Also a very convenient location if in transit on A1(M) or for visiting Durham. The children's playground is certainly one of the better ones. So in general a good site. The less good points include the almost constant background traffic noise, although we don't find this a problem. It is an unpleasant, and potentially dangerous, site to leave on a bicycle due to being on busy dual carriageway shortly before large roundabout with A1(M) which is unavoidable. And lastly the wifi doesn't work. In between the two visits we stayed on a non-Club site in a very remote area with perfect free wifi on every pitch. This year most of our visits to Club sites have been to sites where the wifi doesn't work, although the wifi is shown on the website as a facility and there is nothing on the website to indicate the contrary

Great for Durham

We stayed for 2 nights 17-18 June the site has friendly wardens and is well maintained, unable to locate river walk details in the information room – though these are available from reception. Previously upon arrival wardens have highlighted available pitches on the site map as there are 4 categories on this site, it took a while to find an available one. My concern here and this was passed on to the wardens is the use of pitches (hardstanding) as walk routes. This was very annoying until the adjacent pitch was empty. My suggestion for future development is for hedges between pitches?

Great base for visiting Durham

We had two nights on this site so that we could spend time with a relative who lives in Durham. Access to the site was really easy, straight off the A1 junction, so not hard to find. The drawback to being so close to the A1 was that there was some road noise, however we didn't notice it when in the van, just if we were sitting out. The facilities were excellent and as expected on a club site, though I heard a lot of people moaning about the fact that mops in the showers had been replace by the squeegee things, however I much prefer these to mops sitting in dirty looking water. The site is well laid out with an excellent dog walk and plenty of poo bins (just a shame a minority appear to be unable to get to grips with the concept of picking up). There are plenty of trees and shrubbery to give the site a rural feel and we were pleased to see hedgehogs roaming the site and plenty of bird life. We were sufficiently impressed with the site to have already rebooked for later in the year.

Great Site, Great Location... But the road noise...

Good site, really handy for the Park & Ride, but so close to the A1(M) you can clearly hear it inside your caravan. We went in a wet and windy November & it was noisy, so I imagine it will be even noisier in the summer months with the higher air pressure making sound travel further. That said, the noise wasn't terrible and didn't stop us sleeping, but the constant drone is there. A shame as this is the only negative about this site.

An enjoyable 5 night stay

We stayed here for a few days in March 2015 whilst visiting family in the area. It is a good location for the sights of the North East and we had a great day out at Beamish where we have not visited for over 30 years. We did not notice significant road noise from the nearby A1 and had a pleasant stay.

Good Site for a Stopover

This was our 3rd time at Durham Grange and with its ease of access from the A1 surely traffic noise should be expected. The site is clean and well kept, as are the facilities. Park & Ride is close by for Durham which is a city well worth visiting. Large Tesco Extra within 3 miles for provisions. If feeling energetic there is a walk from the site to the River Wear which you can then follow into the city. Either walk back or get the bus!

No mention of the motorway!

As per usual with the Caravan Club this was a well kept site with decent facilities BUT it is sited directly off the A1M and is also bordered by the dual carriageway that runs into Durham city centre. As a result there was a constant drone of traffic noise which was really annoying and spoilt our stay. I do feel this should be pointed out in the site description on a site that is so close to 2 main roads. Disappointed.

Ideal for visiting the Durham Area

We had three nights here in May.  The weather could have been kinder, but that is beyond our control.  We were greeted by Mel who let us choose a pitch from those available and gave us all the information we needed about the site and local area.  The site was in good order and the toilet block clean, if a bit tired in parts.  There is a bit of background noise from the A1, but this was not excessive. The Park and Ride is just across the A1 from the site, just 10 mins walk.  The grass verge to the Park and Ride had been disturbed recently, probably from roadworks, and was a bit treacherous, so take care. The buses take you to several locations around Durham and are easy to access.  We went to the Cathedral and Castle, both of which are well worth visiting.   A great site for accessing the Durham area. We will be back.

Perfect stop off for visiting north

I would just like to say how helpful I found the staff when I had to make a last min booking to stay late on the site. I arrived at around 11 pm and had access to all facilities, electric, or whatever I needed. Great site.
