Our favourite site

Been coming here since daughter now 15 was eight. It's a great site. Staff are friendly and very helpful and keep the site and facilities in top condition. Regarding noise there are trains and the quarry operating but any noise is momentary and it soon becomes tranquil again. I've never had any issue with smells from the composting toilets, more likely the chemical toilet tanks!

Week Away

Lovely site, friendly and helpful staff. My husband had an interview while we were on holiday and they helped a lot. Deer within close proximity of the site which are lovely to see. One reviewer mentioned the train noise was incessant. However we didn't find that a problem the trains run every half an hour stopping at Moreton every hour, the only thing we can think is that they must have been near to the gate which leads out onto the road to the station and The Frampton Arms and the crossing going up and down does make quite a noise. Trains from Moreton Station (within 5-6 min walk from the site) to Bournemouth, Wareham, Dorchester and Weymouth, other stations in between. We visited the Black Dog in Broadmayne, not an easy walk from the site because we couldn't find a path off the road that went all the way to the pub and the road was very busy. All that said it was worth the walk as the pub and staff were amazing. We had meals in The Frampton Arms (within walking distance from the site) which was nice and easy to get to and back, they also do breakfasts but we didn't get chance to try it, they don't have a specific vegan menu but can sort you out with something. The Thimble in Piddlehinton was quite formal but they had a vegan menu so there was more choice for me, personally better to order 2 starters (one for a starter and one starter for a main rather than having a main course) so that you have room for a pudding. You can stay in the carpark overnight at The Thimble for a fee if you want however we didn't do this so not sure how it works. We walked to The Walled Garden from the site which has a Send Cafe which was very nice too, they ask for a donation which you can either put cash in the box or pay by card at the Cafe. Tank museum at Bovington is well worth a visit, we did it 13 years ago before our daughter and they have added more things to do in that time so well worth a visit. If we get the chance to return to the site we would definitely go to Monkey World and The Cider Museum as we didn't get chance to do these. The cider museum is within walking distance from the site and go back to Dorchester and Wareham and Weymouth and Swanage, There is a steam train at Swanage but not all of them are steam we ended up with a diesel so if you're desperate for a bit of steam you need to plan your visit. At Swanage there is also a park where there are 3 dedicated motorhome parking spaces but we decided to use the train instead. Also we would go to Poole as we never managed to do that either as there is so much to do.

Lovely site with lots of deer

We stayed 3 nights on this site and found it a good base for exploring Poole, Studland and Weymouth. We had originally booked a hardstanding pitch which resembled a car park near the entrance but the warden recommended we look for a grass pitch which we did and ended up with a lovely spacious pitch. There was a lot of choice depending on your preference for being near others or further apart and how close you want to be to the railway line. It was disappointing not to be able to use our charcoal bbq which I think should have been mentioned on the booking confirmation as we booked a long time in advance and did not realise that only gas and electric bbqs could be used. The toilets and showers are in separate blocks which is mildly inconvenient if you aren't used to it but both are clean and functional. There were lots of deer about which was lovely to see but also to note lots of burdock on the edges of the grass which was difficult to remove from our dog's coat. We were lucky with the weather and would stay here again in the future.

Not Currently Recommended For Dogs!

I am very sad to be writing this review, but feel very strongly that other dog owners should be aware. - This has been our favourite site for many years and possibly the site that we have visited the most. We have always had our dogs with us and have always enjoyed our stays here. We only live in Poole and have loved this site for 2 or 3 night get aways. However, on this occasion, we cut our 2 nights stay short and left after one night. There is a very real problem on this site with Burdock plants, or similar. - These are plants that shed small spikey balls of seeds that attach themselves to animals. Our dogs faces and legs were covered in these after every walk and became very distressed. After every walk it took 30 minutes to an hour to try to remove these seeds from our dogs, which again caused distress. We even tried walking the dogs in the middle of the roadways to avoid these seeds, but somehow, the dogs still picked them up. We spoke to other dog owners on the site all complaining of the same thing. I don't know what the answer is, as this is obviously a wild plant with seeds distributed by animals or on the wind. - I can't see that there is an answer to this, and we will not be able to stay here again without evidence that these plants have been eradicated. It was also a little disappointing to find every urinal in our block sealed off, resulting in having to wait for the toilet. Why? - No explanatory signs and we are way past Covid Restrictions!

Lovely place.

We visited at the end of lockdown then had to find somewhere to store our caravan, put our name down here and out of the blue we got a call that a space was available so it now stays down there in storage until we fancy some time away then it's a 4/5 hr drive down, 1/2 hr to get her on one of our favourite pitches and we're settled. I to had reservations about the loos but they're ok just don't put anything in your back pockets cos if it goes down the hole you've lost it. It's a lovely quiet site with a great pub/restaurant a short walk away. So far we have visited Monkey world, Weymouth, Dorchester and Poole, the RNLI college in Poole has a lovely restaurant and great views over the harbour. The staff are great and very helpful. We will be staying there for the foreseeable future that's for sure.

Love watching the deer, lovely site

Just watching the deer roam the site is great, really peaceful in a nice setting with several glades offering seclusion - definitely not the car park style of site. Composting toilets are fine (they don’t smell). You get the occasional train noise if you chose a pitch on that side of the site. Helpful friendly wardens. Good access to all Dorset has to offer, with Dorchester a few miles away. Trains to Dorchester, Poole & Bournemouth just a short walk away to station. Cycle routes from the site. Definitely will be back.

Not for me

The toilets are not very nice they closed most of them just after bank holiday and they do smell a bit no matter what people tell you I know it’s not the sites fault but the trains are very very noisy from seven in the morning till eleven at night , on a positive the wild life is amazing there

Not for us

First of all a disclaimer, we predominantly use CL sites so our idea of the perfect site may not match that of regular club site visitors. We stayed on this site because my daughter and son in law wanted to try tent camping with our 4-year-old grandson Jack, so we needed to find a site that would take both our caravan and their tent. My daughter was not sure about camping being more of an Airbnb person so it was important that her first camping experience was a good one hence I chose a club site knowing that the facilities would be first class and as always the wardens didn't let us down. The composting toilets were a revelation and I would say to anyone that may be put off by them that they didn't smell at all and in some respects due to their design they were actually cleaner than a standard toilet bowl. The wardens were extremely helpful when we arrived as I had booked a pitch without an awning but all the pitches adjacent to the camping pitches were pitches with awnings so they allowed us to use one of these so we would be close to our daughter. We were told when we arrived that due to the site being in a “Red Zone” we would not be able to use BBQs which I quite understand however we were a little disappointed to be told this included the Cadac type grill, I feel this was perhaps a little over zealous interpretation of Dorset councils ban on disposable BBQs and campfires. The site is well laid out with little pockets of pitches however as others have said it suffers from the fact that on one side it is adjacent to a busy road, one side has a train line running by it, and on the third side is a working quarry. We were pitched alongside the road which was busy from about 6.30 to 22.00. Each morning we were greeted by traffic noise the bleeping of the level crossing warning and the sound of quarry vehicles reversing. Despite this, we had a lovely stay and our daughter is already planning their next camping trip. As is clear from other reviews many people love this site and it is not my intention to put people off, just be careful where you choose to pitch.

Lovely site

We spent August Bank Holiday here and it's one of the loveliest sites we've been to: the last couple of sites we visited had a bit of a "camping in a car park" feel to them, but none of that here - spots well spaced out and near the trees, deer appearing several times a day to nibble on the grass, spotless facilities, we will definitely come here again. We were in the corner of the site closest to the railway line and level crossing, and although we were aware of train noises they were never intrusive. The site guide says TV reception is not so good but it was fine for us (although we used the aerial plug-in on the bollard most of the time but I wanted to experiment and see how well our caravan aerial worked!). Thanks to the staff for a fantastic site with all the facilities we wanted, but still with a back-to-nature feel to it.

Wonder wardens🦸🏼‍♂️

Having arrived after a journey full of mishaps and long traffic delays...I was at the point of putting my motorhome for sale and was asking myself why do I bother!! I was given a cheerful smile and greeting at reception thorough friendly introduction to the Crossways site and with blurry tired eyes I took my site map and headed off to find my pitch. I couldn't make head nor tail of the map so the first available white post I parked...no..I'm abandoned my vehicle to be fair it wasn't great parking..and the map was fab..I was just trying to read it with my driving glasses I later realised!!! Oh dear I was in a pickle! I stepped out my vehicle and woosh the rain started... I tried to bash my pegs into the ground with rain trickling down my neck and everywhere swear word running internally as my pegs bucked over like an ice-cream in a hot day! Enough I said...I was buckling too. I got into bed... everything and I mean everything piled on the bed as I couldn't get the awning up to decant my gear (I have a small van hence need that extra canvas cave!) I curled in a ball on the ledge of the bed im sure there was more space in my mother's womb!!!! In the morning I was ready to head home and forget my whole holiday. I was marching to reception for 9am..bottom lip a wobbling and there again we're smiling wardens who listened whilst I poured out my woes...then without me noticing they sprinkled me with fairy dust...and soon I was smiling too, learning about rock pegs (who knew...I do now!), being offered help, given empathy, reminded "we've all been there"...I went back to my little home skipping...sure enough after morning duties...I was shown to a more appropriate pitch for my inappropriate pegs and offered help to get my awning up...and still they smiled even though this customer was clearly having some kind of menopausal~motorhome~meltdown!! With everything sent up and a shower in the spotlessly clean facilities...I felt calm, cheerful and loving the outdoors life again... I can only conclude the fact that my motorhome is not up for sale this morning and I'm sat here under a tree with squirrels playing chase, deer munching grass just in the distance, my lungs full with fresh pine air and the calmness of mind down to the incredible kind, patient and understanding wardens at Crossways site. If ever they wish to give up this role I bet they'd make the best counsellors in this planet or alternatively in my experience they definitely should be made into superheros... actually they already are!!! Thanks so much you are AWESOME
