Pollution

We've stayed here many times since the seventies - but I have to say that yesterday 15th October the pleasant tranquil atmosphere was ruined by a loud polluting leaf blower doing the seemingly essential task of blowing leaves around. Can the club explain why this is necessary on a site which probably has hundreds of trees, all of them ready to shed their leaves? I suppose the old favourite health and safety reason will be trotted out!

As described but ………..

Lovely location in ancient NT woods, like Kendal site rather dark but head out of either top or bottom and your by the lake or amongst the hills. Walk to the Ship Inn pub about 25 mins, the path did get flooded so wellies or boots needed, great atmosphere and food. Walk to Coniston, gravel/tarmac solid about 40 mins. Plenty of cafes and a few pubs and shops. Obviously the Old Man of Coniston walk and many great dog walking opportunities. However, I was very disappointed with the poor bus service, with a bus stop outside the site I had expected a regular service but sadly not. Even from Coniston there was literally only 1 early in the morning with a couple return in the afternoon! For motorhomers this is no good.

Stunning location

We stayed for a week in September. The site is well run. The pizza van is very good and you can pre-order during the day. Toilets etc very clean. There is a small shop on site selling all essentials including alcohol. We chose the quieter area which is through the left barrier but it is about a 20 minute walk to the lake. We used a local taxi which takes dogs (7seater) run by a nice chap called Alan. His details are available from reception but you text him rather than phone. We used him everyday to visit different places and he was always helpful /very reasonably priced. Plenty of places to eat in Coniston with the ship inn a 15 minute walk and they also do a dogs dinner. We will definitely be returning at some point, the whole area is absolutely stunning.

Campervan Visit September 2021

Very friendly welcome to an amazingly quiet site, considering its size - the warden advised us on options for a quiet pitch and she was absolutely correct. Direct access on footpaths to Coniston Water from bottom of site and Coniston by following the footpath signs along the old railway line from the top of the site. Site and facilities up to normal C&MC standards.

5 night stay

lovely location near to Coniston, the lake and the beautiful mountains,Difficult to find a pitch in a quite long motorhome and eventually found a good flat one near the playground at the bottom but a really long uphill walk to reception. Not a great site if you are not very agile. Lovely friendly wardens and very good facilities.

Tranquil setting

Stayed here for 4 nights. Lots of little cul de sacs which were small and very quiet. The toilet and shower block was immaculate. The lake was a short walk away and you could walk in to Coniston along the shore. Lots of walks to do and some good cycle tracks. Had a pizza from the pizza van on site and thoroughly enjoyed it. Plenty places in Coniston to eat and drink. Had a nice meal in the Ship Inn which was about a 15 minute walk away along the old railway line. Would certainly recommend a stay at the campsite, beautiful setting and very relaxing.

One Night Stop Over

Stayed here on Our Motor Home. This is a large site on different levels, at first we had trouble locating the area our pitch was in. We were offered a few pitches to choose from, we took the first we found. The pitch was hard standing electric and was level. As it was all gravel the pitch appeared large enough if you wanted to put an awning up. Although there was a lot of trees around, there was no grass were we were pitched, although I did observe grass near other pitches. There is a large lake within walking distance, which was picturesque. As we were only there for one night we did not encounter the staff, but they were friendly on our arrival and departure. The toilet/shower facilities were clean.

Beautiful location, but spread out

We picked a pitch near the lake, and also near the toilets. It was beautiful, with trees around, and general privacy, despite the size of the site. Very cleverly designed! As it is so huge, it is quite a walk back to reception, but the walk was worth it. The man on reception was a little brusque, but perhaps that was his way, as he was friendly on the following days. We had only booked one night, but loved it so much, we stayed for 3 nights. The lake was stunning, but beware cyclists, it is no easy ride round the whole of Coniston, as we found out! We found a walk up on a tiny footpath, the other side of the main road, and ended up in a pub, where we had great views, great food, and fab beer! Hic! This was an amazing site, and we would love to go back, although one of the roads there was a little hair-raising for new motorhomers!

Paddle boarding stay

As many reviews before state, the site is very clean, good sized pitches, excellent facilities and situated near Coniston Water. The walk into Coniston is either along the lake then through several fields or from the top of the site and along various footpaths with a brief stretch along the road (no footpath). Coniston is a cheery village with three good little general stores and some good pubs / cafes. As our main reason for staying on site was the access to the lake to paddle-board, we were perturbed to find that it was actually some distance from our pitch with either a fully inflated or even deflated board. Like many reviewers before us, selecting an appropriate pitch was a bit of a lottery and we ended up on a good pitch but at the opposite end of the site to the lake access point. Also there were two gates on leaving the site and another on passing through Coniston Hall campsite before reaching the lakeside. Access to the edge of the site via car is available for unloading (cars to be removed once unloaded) but the gates still need to be negotiated. My husband managed the journey several times but I would struggle that distance if on my own. This is by no means a criticism but an observation for others planning on utilising the wonderful shoreline and access to the stunning Coniston Water.

An idyllic location

As per many other reviews below, this is a lovely site in a beautiful location with excellent facilities on site. However, the majority of pitches are not level and navigating the huge site around the one-way system is tedious. You very quickly lose all sense of which direction is south-facing! The staff were excellent though and despite the levelling issues for motorhomers I would happily return here. Coniston is a scenic 30min walk from site with some lovely pubs and cafes to choose from.
