Try not to go when the winter wardens are still there (March). There was no replacement gas available, no papers, very little essentials in fact. Do not book a non-awning pitch they are very small and restricted to poor areas of the Site.
This is a fantastic site in the middle of the forrest on the banks of Conniston Water. if you are into water sports hill walking or a quiet pub lunch or dinner this is the site for you. My own treasured memory of being here was walking the dog early one morning thro the trees and coming across a young stag eating his breakfast he looked at us and we back at him and he wandered slowly away. the site is a pleasurable walk to the village of conniston and the pubs and shops. which can be very busy during the summer months. the main road access is narrow so make sure you approach from the way that the club guide recomends its also hand for Ambleside and all the other lakes attractions well worth a visit
Fabulous site within walking distance of Coniston village and good dog friendly pubs. (The Ship Inn is the nearest pub about 15 mins walk and the new owners were very accommodating and friendly.)
The relief wardens on site were extremely friendly and made me feel very welcome. They offered some good advice for training my dog - hopefully I'll get to visit their site near Exmoor!
There is also access to the lakeside from the site with wonderful walks and spectacular views.
Booked a one night stay to try out our new VW campervan on what is a fairly local site to us.
We received a very friendly welcome and spotless facilities.
We had been here many years ago with the family and living near the Lake District we know the area well.
Great for walking, quiet and sheltered location, within walking distance of the pub and Coniston village.
Unfortunately the weather was not so kind but the visiting fish & chip van was a great bonus.
We will return.
We thoroughly enjoyed the site and facilities, as we expected as we had been before several times. A little put off by the warden who had us move 6 inches because our position was not perfect. There was no-one either side of us for the whole visit! We were a motorhome rather than a caravan, so the position was not really critical. Rather sad. Fortunately it was a relief warden, so will visit again.
Tried this site for an extended February break. Dogs loved it, which meant it was great for us. Off-lead walks right down to the Coniston Water were fab and the young dog loved the clean water of the the lake (as did we when she was so clarty when she went in but clean when she came out!). Wardens Alan and Dee were great and helpful. Travelling chip shop is expensive at £6 per person - same price for Cumberland sausage and chips - can't comment on quality as they'd run out of what we wanted so we cooked in the van.
We approached from the North (via Penrith, Keswick, Grasmere and Ambleside) - the route is a bit challenging and not for the faint-hearted if you are towing a large van (ours is a 27 foot twin-axle) but is fine if you take your time, use the few wide bits of road to slow and let other vehicles get past so they can progress at their pace. We'd arrive this way again as it's so much shorter for us than the long detour to the southern route. Will be back!
We stumbled across this site in August last year. .and are so glad we did! We arrived on the 15th Feb for just under a week..( we are still on site). What a truly unique and fabulous place this is. The park is very big however due to the positioning of pitches it has the most wonderful feel to it. The wardens are amazing. Alan is very on the ball with speeding cars..which as a mum makes you smile inside. Nothing is too much trouble for him and his wife Dee. When we arrived we had a choice of pitches and was told due to half of the park being closed our dogs could have a run off down the bottom..ad long as we cleaned up after them, it's a shame not everyone does this. If you've dogs ( which we have get cleaned up after them)! The facilities are immaculate. Shop well stocked and always a smile and friendly chat on a morning. Imo rules are made to keep us all safe and happy. Well done winter wardens.
we arrived on friday 13th feb,the rain was pouring down.We were met by a great warden called allan and his wife dee.Nothing was too much trouble for this warden he helped in finding us a space to helping my husband with the caravan. The site again was spotless and the showers very clean. Will be returing again in may
