Big Bang in Camelford

we stayed here four nights as part of our current tour. the site was busy which meant the choice of pitches was limited. The pitch we chose was in a corner which looked wet and dark, turned out not to be the case but I did have to be careful not to plough the park when we left. As others have said the facilities block is in need of a complete upgrade, The wardens here are doing a fantastic job, they keep the site very clean, very inviting and have the balance between safety and freedom just right. It was disappointing that the WiFi was not working and there seemed to be no definite date for its repair. We found the buses easy to locate and use. People with a phobia about electricity pylons should not stay here. Early one morning, the people in the next caravan turned their gas on without opening the flue vent and blew the bl...y door off as Michael Caine might say, that was exciting!

Our first stay at Camelford

This was our first stay at Camelford and we had a nice stay but facilities could have been better. The shower block is old but kept clean. We did not use the shower block because of Covid 19, we used our own facilities. What we found annoying was that there was only one chemical waste facility based at the end of the shower block, none at any of the service points. Also no bins at the service points, you had to walk up to the shower to a bin compound for recycling and general waste. When we arrived there had been a lot of rain so all the grass pitches were churned up, so people were trying to get hard standing pitches. There are only thirteen hard standing pitches and we were lucky to get one. Pitch moving seemed to happen every day as motor homes were struggle o the grass pitches. We had lovely views of sunset whilst there and lovely weather but I don’t think we would stay there again. The assistant warden worked really hard helping motor homes get off wet pitches and cleaning up mole hills.

Good place to stay as a base camp, quiet and staff friendly

Third time we have stayed here in 8 weeks, just bought our vw campervan. Great place to stay as a base camp, with easy access onto the A39 and beyond. We pitched on grass using our levellers with no problems. Staff friendly and informative. Facilities clean and good Covid systems in place. We only stayed for one night at a time as handy for us whilst travelling down or back from the lower parts of Cornwall. Would stay longer if could. Great for visiting Roughtor, Brown Willy Tor if you like walking. The old Davidstow airfield was a great find for exploring. WiFi is an issue on-site, only available in a small radius around the upper part of the site. We have just bought a mobile router £70 and data SIM card PAY go and tried it there and had no problems with WiFi or internet connection. Overall, a nice place to stay, well run and clean. Will definitely be back. Well done to the two sets of wardens.😀

Calm Camelford

This was our first visit to the Camelford site and our 2nd site on a 4 site Tour. We have over the last few years visited most of the main club sites in Cornwall and this site is the 2nd to last on our list. Last year we stayed at the beautiful Tintagel site so knew what sights we wanted to see in the local area. This site is smaller and as hoped much quieter than Tintagel. We were pleased with our pitch but wished the the grass had been moved because our trainers got soaked every morning in the early morning dew, something we had not anticipated as the weather was so nice. The site is easy to access and the views are stunning. The Wardens are very friendly and our fellow campers were very respectful of the Covid-19 rules. We also thought it was great to be on a site where we did not have to dodge the usual round of kids on bikes/scooters. We go out a lot so our sons never engaged in that activity thank goodness. Our main reason for choosing this area is that I have totally fallen in love with Bude Seapool and due to swimming pool closures wanted to go there more than ever. Bude was well organised for Covid-19 (we later moved site and so can compare it with other overcrowed beaches). We do have the benefit of knowing which parts of the beach area are quieter though and also where to park out of the way of the main car park. We enjoyed the Camel Trail but did not stop in Padstow as it was madly busy. The other end of the trail was much quieter. The local fish and chip shop in Camelford was really great. Well organised and really good quality fish and chips. So Camelford is on our 'we would like to return' list but the trouble is so is Tintagel, Godrevy and Merrose Farm. The shower block is a little dated, but given the Covid-19 crisis is was well organised with the wrist band system. As on all club sites we have visited this year, with the exception of Malvern Hills, there were always people who went in without the band, or left bands inside the block or literally barged me out of the washing up area, but over all most people are really decent and a pleasure to be around. Well done Camelford

A lovely break

We were very pleased to have made a booking here just in time for the July reopening. Found this to be a very nice little site with easy access, no narrow lanes to negotiate. The Covid arrangements were very good and made clear on arrival. Although there were only 2 female showers and toilets open I never had to queue, suspect a lot of people were using their own facilities. The wardens were great and everything was well maintained and clean, and this is a great base to see North Cornwall. Avoided the main tourist honeypots like Rock and Padstow though, preferred Widemouth Bay and Daymer Bay, both beautiful. Have booked a longer stay in October!

Nice club site

A really nice peaceful and well kept site. Pat and Mick the site managers have made a brilliant effort. We'll worth a visit just spent a couple night but wanted to stay longer.

Good, although not a favourite.

Three nights here, Tuesday to Friday. Site fairly full when we arrived at booked time (16:00-18:00), and inevitably the pitches and hardstandings farthest from the busy road had been taken. Probably best to plan to arrive early. However, I like a grass pitch if it's firm ground. The one we settled on as nearest level available (most slope a bit, some more than others) was unfortunately near the road and a trifle noisy at times, but OK overnight. On the first morning around 7:00 am there was a lot of metal clanking noise, which turned out to be one half of a parkhome being unloaded from its low-loader (for delivery to a site some way down the narrowish access road). Not our site's fault and perhaps part of the rich camping tapestry of camping experience! Or not. Our first day was absolutely beautiful, and we enjoyed the afternoon in Bude by the canal. However the following day was wet, foggy and miserable and promised little better on the third. On leaving I was a little concerned about driving on wet grass, but it was no problem at all. Handy to walk to the filling station on the main A39 for a paper (or food etc) - about 20-25 mins there and back for me, not a swift walker. We didn't actually use the on-site shower block, but all seemed to be suitably Covid-proofed.

Nice visit but spoilt by the few...!

This is our first visit to this site in over 20 plus years and it's not changed much in that time, what has changed during this period of time is the arrogance of certain people/members who seem to think that the Wardens along with other members are there to run around after them and clean up after their dogs which have been allowed to run about out of control generally annoying decent members and also messing on other people's pitches then failing to clear up after the event. The dog walk was left like the perpetual mine field almost daily by people who think that the Wardens (and/or) other people were there to clear up after them. Albeit the weather wasn't the best - a fair amount of rain and mist but that is just your luck whenever you get the "van" out for a trip but it didn't stop us enjoying our break, however the lack of thought for anyone but themselves by these irresponsible dog owners certainly put a dampener on our break. We are dog owners and like to think we are responsible for their behaviour and any mess that sometimes on very rare occasions results in an accident is immediately "bagged and binned" and let's be honest their is no shortage of bins on any club sites so there is no excuse for not picking anything one's dog mess up !!!!! The site was of the usual standard expected and excellently attended to by both the Wardens and their Reliefs, thank you all. The Cozzies

Fantastic, quiet and calm site

We had 5 nights booked at Camelford in August, the site was easy to access which was good, no narrow Cornish roads to manouvere down! There was a fish and chip van there on the Sunday evening, so we treated ourselves to a portion of chips. They were very nice. It would be good if the club could publish on the website if/when food vans visit site. When we first arrived we picked a grass pitch by the storage area, however it was quite sloped (nose pretty much on the floor) we then moved to a hardstanding pitch opposite, perfectly level. It was a brilliant base for visiting North Cornwall. There is a small enclosed dog walk, perfect for morning and night toilet stops, with a small park opposite for a bit more of a leg stretch. Our dog was exhausted from all the day trips so didn't need much walking! We were enjoying our stay so much, we enquired about staying another 2 nights. The site showed as full, and the wardens (relief wardens, I've forgotten their names but they were wonderful and lovely!) also said it showed full, but managed to find a way to get us 2 extra nights. The reason it showed as full? Tent pitches. They have had to reserve a number of pitches for tents, and these can't be used for anyone else. These are charged at a lower rate, but are exactly the same pitches! Because of those tent pitches, this small site (only 50 something pitches in total!) was full, but actually had about 5 free spaces. Luckily, the wardens were fantastic and sorted it out allowing us 2 extra nights at this brilliant site. We didn't use the facilities, but did pop our heads in. Toilets and showers were all clean, a bit dated but look like they do the job! There is no play park or no space for children to play really so not ideal for families who want lots of space. There were a couple of families there during our stay, but because of the lack of facilities it makes for a lovely quiet site. Because this site is inland, rather than right on the coast, the wind was not really an issue at all. Having spoken to some fellow caravanners who had moved from Trewethett Farm to here because that site was so exposed, we were glad we made the decision we did! The wardens stock some items, there is a Londis shop a short walk away, and the town on Camelford is only about 10/15 minutes walk away, where there is a co-op (and a lovely pub!). If you exit the site through the dog walk, and cross and go through the park, then you can get into Camelford with footpaths the entire way. Overall, a really nice site and one we would be extremely happy to visit again.

Goburers go to Corwall.

We found the site easily and were soon on a pleasant pitch. We arrived on a Sunday and in a very short time were enjoying good fish and chips from the visiting van! The site is excellently situated for visiting many well known villages, both coastal and inland, and as it was school holidays we accepted everywhere would be busy - what an understatement!! The motto was "go early"!. Take plenty of change for car parks (reasonably priced) and public toilets -( 20p and 50p ). We ate in "Catch" at Mawgan Porth one day - fairly expensive but lovely fresh fish - enjoyable meal. Boscastle is always lovely - slippery path when wet but we were lucky and just had gorgeous sunshine and lovely pasties! We visited some "off the tourist trail" places - Delabole Slate quarry - a very big hole in the ground - viewing area provided. Delabole Wind Farm (ex) visitor centre (make of it what you will ). We drove through Davidstow airfield and regret not having the time to visit the Military Museum as the write ups are very good. We visited Jamaica Inn to make sure their cakes were as good as a few years ago - even better! Altanun is a pretty and very ancient village on the way to the A30 and our visit to Looe - lots to see at Looe and the beach was busy in the sunshine. This was our first visit to this site and as it seems so conveniently situated we will be back. Our thanks to the very pleasant and welcoming wardens but the site could do with a little bit of updating; new grouting in the shower cubicles - or am I just being "picky"? Summing up - a small pleasant and relaxed site in an excellent location - thank-you.
