Good city break site. Convenient for Addenbrooke’s Hospital

Retired couple, we spent two weeks on site in February to be close for visiting our son in Addenbrooke’s Hospital (1.5 miles away). Strongly recommend the Club’s road directions are followed on arrival as other local roads are quite narrow and busy. The wardens were very pleasant and extremely helpful - delightful people. The facilities were of the usual high standard we experience on Club sites. Used the washing machine (£4) and drier (£1) during our stay. City bus stops within easy reach and a Tesco superstore one mile away (no fuel station). Despite a little noise in the evening from a nearby sports field, we found the site peaceful and relaxing whilst ideal for visiting the city. Even managed an afternoon punting on The Cam! We would definitely use the site again.

Good Location

The wardens on this site were helpful, welcoming, and a great advert for how to run a club site. On arrival we were invited to walk the site due to the number of dead ends and select a pitch, this worked very well due to the layout of the site. The wardens provided what is the most useful info sheet we have come across and they additionally provided some local maps to assist with us getting out and about. This will probably be quite a "tight" site during the high season to negotiate around some of the pitches when fully occupied. A very good, regular bus service runs just down the road from the site into the city centre. Advice to get the "Day Rider" ticket saved some pennies as well. Cambridge is a mixture of traditional and modern and definitely worth taking the time to find the sight seeing points of interest. The noise generated locally was a surprise, inevitably there will be the sirens from the ambulances arriving at the nearby hospital, aircraft noise from the nearby airfield and also the use of the outside facilities from the adjacent sports centre, they did thankfully stop around 10pm. All these are of course outside the control of the wardens. We had a very disrupted first night due to the gales and the motorhome was definitely moving about, thankfully we remembered to put the satellite dish down and the natural landscape of the site protected us, especially when we saw some of the damage reported nearby. We cannot comment on suitability for families, just the two of us hence the 3 stars awarded. Excellent access to Cambridge, good well maintained facilities and a very hard working couple running the site made our visit very worthwhile.

Happy New Year - 2018 - Great Wardens

We chose the Cherry Hinton site to see in the New Year along with our friends who had traveled along in their Motor-home. The site is located in a position fairly local to us being only about an hour away from home so close enough to abandon all plans and return home if the weather really cut up rough, The site is situated in the floor of a former limestone quarry and in spite of several days of heavy rain before we arrived it was remarkably free of standing water. However the wardens took great care to see that we were pitched up satisfactorily using the hard standings to best advantage. The directions in the handbook were perfect for finding the site with a minimum of fuss and we were led directly there. There is a lot to take the interest of the visitor to Cherry Hinton being on the 'doorstep' so to speak of the City of Cambridge. An excellent bus service operates just five minutes walk from the site to whisk one into this famous centre of learning in about 30 minutes. A fantastic network of cycle-ways is easily accessed to take one into the city with some routes being partially off road or on quiet urban streets away from the main thoroughfares. The wardens were very helpful and knowledgeable of the area and hosted a social for two hours in the site office with mulled wine and mince pies on New Years Eve and all campers were welcomed to attend. We departed on 2 January 2018 after 4 nights feeling our time had been well spent and it is certainly a place we will revisit at some future date. The facilities on the site are starting to look a bit 'tired' but the Site staff were preparing to close the site down the following day and substantial alterations are to be made to the access at the site entrance and we understand an update to the sanitation block facilities is also in hand with partial re-opening in March 2018.

Great site for layover or to simply relax for several days

This was a nice site with clean, modern facilities. Friendly and very helpful wardens, and there was plenty of points for recycling and water, so we never had to venture very far. Given the icy weather, heavy snow, and winds, I was very happy about this particular feature! Even with only having the odd day of non-inclement weather, it was a fantastic stay. The wardens had spread grit and the dog run had two dog waste bins, so our Newfies were able to be walked without bother. The wardens put water out for them and would come out and break the ice for them so they could drink before heading back to the van. Our teens enjoyed walking in the nearby Quarry park with us (dogs permitted, on lead only). There was easy access to the bus and a nearby pub with good meals that wasn't expensive either. As for supermarkets, we were spoilt for choice. Tesco was nearby as well as several Chinese supermarkets, in case we wanted some authentic Asian cuisine. I'd rather like going back to this site during the warmer months and fancy enjoying a good Korean style BBQ one afternoon! Another nice day we visited the nearby American cemetery. It was a beautiful place to visit and if you are ahistory buff, a definite must visit place. The visitor's centre had lots of pictures, interactive exhibits and so on, the caretaker was happy to receive visitors and talk about the site as well, and a walk through the cemetery was quite touching. As it happened, my wife is American and using the free app she downloaded, she did a quick search and located the grave of one relative and the names of two more on the wall of the missing. The pitches were well laid out so you felt very private and no matter where uyou were, you had trees to look at. The electric didn't stutter despite the inclement weather and the wifi connectivity kept our game happy son occupied while were weren't playing board games, out, or watching a film.

white christmas

Well not quite a white xmas but very nearly. Two days after xmas snow arrived at cherry hinton club site. As usual the wardens were cheerful and maintained a safe area around the shower blocks and kept water points from freezing during the day. We have visited this site a few times now and whatever the weather you always get a friendly welcome from wardens Alan and Julia Morris. there is a very good frequent bus service near site into Cambridge and plenty of places to have a meal out. The site is ideal for older members as you can choose to relax on site usually nice and peaceful or hop on the bus into Cambridge or catch one going to the Tesco superstore, alterntively there is a Tesco express store within easy walking distance in the village along with a boots pharmacy and other shops

Let it snow !

We have had many visits to Cherry Hinton club site so know it well. On this occasion we went the weekend it snowed so with three inches of snow on the ground I was a little worried about getting off the pitch, up the slope to the barrier and then the slope as you exit the site. I need not have worried. Grit had been spread on all the slopes by the wardens and in any event help would have been at hand with any difficulty. We arrived on site on the Friday with the site very full, by Monday it was deserted. I wonder why ! Many thanks to the wardens for such good preparations in adverse weather.

Excellent for visiting Cambridge

This site is excellent for visiting Cambridge both if you have your own transport or you are using public transport. The pitches are very well laid out and cleanliness of the site is outstanding. The site is very peaceful.

Good base for visiting Cambridge

Firstly I should mention that we visited this site as a retired couple. So cannot really comment on how good this site is for families. Hence the middle mark of three stars on that particular point. That said, we found the site excellent in almost every other area. The site is excellent for trips into Cambridge with very regular buses on two routes within easy walking distance. The location at Cherry Hinton is easy to find and the access roads are good. The washroom facilities were spotlessly clean with ample hot water and the bonus of central heating. The wardens were friendly and welcoming, whilst the pitches were nicely spaced and very well kept. Nearby are a couple of pubs within easy walking distance and supermarkets about a mile away. There was some noise from the sports fields next door, but nothing too problematic as everything had quietened down at a reasonably early hour. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely return again in the future and have already recommended this place to several of our friends who are members of the club.

Very convenient site

First of all I don't know if it was good for families as we were two people in our 70's and didn't see many children. There was road noise and there was noise from a sports field, but not invasive. The weather for our four day visit deteriorated through our stay and we were very grateful for a good clean warm toilet/shower block with always plenty of hot water. An added bonus for us free bus pass people was the bus stop just a little way from the camp site to the Cambridge centre. We enjoyed our stay and should we want to visit the area again, we would definitely use this campsite.
