One of the best

The wardens at this campsite are the friendliest I have come across. The site and its facilities are immaculate. The setting is idyllic. The only downsides are the noise from the (temporary) generator, which is noticeable but bearable. I love the dawn chorus - jackdaws galore.

Come on Buxton Council -get your finger out !

We have just returned from a 10 night stay at Grin Low.  On arrival we were greeted and welcomed by the most friendly and nice warden we have ever come across at a CC site or elsewhere (and we told him so) his explanation of the site, the facilities and the local area was second to none so despite the monsoon rain outside our holiday got off to the very best of starts. We arrived when there was plenty of choice of pitch so we chose one fairly close to the toilet block which also is home to the only water and waste point (and also the motor home service point) we felt that some other pitches were quite a long way from the facilities which may be an issue for some people. The utility block was spotlessly clean and was functional even when the site was full over the bank holiday weekend, it could do with updating but I have seen a lot worse. My only criticism would be that the water pressure was quite poor so the showers didn't knock you off your feet (shall we say). As the Bank holiday weekend approached a huge generator was delivered and was run 24/7 it was explained that during the previous two bank holiday weekends the demand for electricity was so great that it caused a power outage and the site was left with no power at all. So top marks to the CC for bringing in this contingency to ensure we were all powered up. The noise from the genny was tolerable given the possible alternative. Now down to my title. It has been mentioned that the CC are well aware of the issues with the site facilities however the lease with the council is due up soon and that the club (quite rightly in my opinion) is cautious about spending our money doing improvements until the terms of the lease are renegotiated to a satisfactory outcome so let's hope that the lease issues can be quickly resolved and then this great site can be improved further for us all to enjoy. Walking from the site is great but whichever way you go there is a hill of some sort to conquer. People have said it is an easy walk into Buxton, I would say it is a nice walk but depending on your level of fitness it could be far from easy as there is quite a hill to climb on the way back.  That said the walk (which took us about 45 minutes to the town centre) is lovely and we'll marked on good paths. Buxton itself is a very nice small town with delightful public spaces and a good selection of shops on the pedestrianised High Street. The site is literally in a hole in the ground surrounded on 3 sides by the towering cliffs of the old quarry, this is an issue for mobile phone signal and reception was not good. The worst thing ? The Crows that live in the cliffs -talk about noisy neighbours if you were allowed to go to the shops and buy a shotgun I would have been first in the queue - not funny at 4.30 a.m.to woken by their very loud crowing, give me sirens and the police helicopter noise of the city over that din any day! In conclusion a lovely site and area well worth a visit.

Relaxing site in a beautiful location

We visited this site after seeing a photograph in a flyer from the Caravan Club and we are glad we did. Beautiful location, as we walk a lot. Friendly and helpful wardens who work very hard to make your stay relaxing. You could, if you enjoy walking, park up and not use the car again if you are only there for a few days. Bring a bike with you and everything is available - you will need a lock! The toilet block, although adequate and very clean could do with a update. Apart from the obvious major holiday periods getting a pitch would not we presume be a problem. Well worth the 3.5 hour drive, so much to do - we will be back as we love what the whole area has to offerHappy.

Excellent site

Just returned from our 2nd trip to this site and can only say the location, the friendly wardens (all great but especially Steve and Luke) and the cleanliness of the facilities means it will remain on our list of return sites. We were lucky to get some great weather leading up to and including bank holiday Monday. Slight blip with the electrics on site on Thursday but dealt with by wardens. We'll be back next year!!

Our recent trip

Just spent 4 nights here from a Sunday - Thursday, so expected site to be quiet, which it certainly was. Didn't realise that it was running on reduced capacity, but did read a notice about the problems with the electricity supply. May be just a coincidence, but on the day we left major electrical work was being undertaken in the Grin Low area, so this could help in the future! Yes, the facilities are long overdue for a refurb, but they were still spotlessly clean. My biggest gripe would be the lack of power to the shower, but guess this is driven by the electricity supply too. Wardens are great and the Wifi on our pitch (108) was fine - maybe because there weren't many on site. We didn't have children with us but did notice a fantastic play area, which would keep them happy. The birds were nesting in the rock faces, the rabbits were running freely and we heard the pheasant too. Be prepared for an early dawn chorus.  All in all, our second visit here and we would definitely return.

Bank holiday bliss

We have just returned from 3 night bank hol weekend and only have praise for the site and the wardens.  We usually stay in this area at a private site with oober modern facilities but this site with its previously referred to "tired" facilities is one we will definitley return to; facilities are spotlessly clean and site very well maintained. The wardens are the friendliest we have come across at a CC site and it was lovely to see them interact with the kids who were stuck with the treasure hunt!  Lovely sheltered location, great walks and who cares if the wifi is iffy???

Rocky Hollow.

You cant fail to like this site, situated ih a disused quarry ( Hollow) is to no disadvantage, sheer rock faces attract bird life, rabbits etc its quiet too. Lovely walks, one into Buxton through the parl and old workings , see the Grin-low carving on the way to the Caverns and coffee in the lovely Central Gardens and lake.  The staff at Buxton Carron, Steve, and not to be forgotten Mark, will make you welcome especially if you like a "banter" as I do, not enuf of it these days I find. Ah the Wi Fi is iffy, ask Mark.  All good---YES I went back after Chatsworth !!

tired club site

Probably one of the nicest sites but half the pitches unused and that's not good for members trying to book, Apparantly electrics are the problem but no one was working! The toilet blocks whilst clean are so dated and not caravan club class desperate revamp needed  The wardens lovely and very obliging but with the site at half capacity it must be frustrating, With the fees now 50 quid near enough I feel the site should be sorted with haste as I only got on as a cancellation and I'm getting frustrated at the amount of times I try to book sites to find they are all full but clearly the clubs management are not being fully open about sites like these that should be available but for a lack of urgent repairs, I would have been so much happier to have arrived on a full site making money for the club than one loosing half its income and I feel sure that will just push up membership fees.

Beautiful site

Stayed Bank holiday weekend, snowing when we arrived but a warm welcome helped us settle in with added bonus of unexpected electricity! Very helpful wardens, clean facilities in a beautiful setting- we'll definitely be returning.

Twice in 2 months

We stayed here in March and loved it so much, we are back again. The area is that good we are moving here.  Parked the car on Friday evening and didn't move it until hitching up to leave. There is so much to do and see locally you don't need to drive.  Staff on site are always friendly and helpful, and the site is well kept despite the bad weather they have had to contend with lately.  Very very good place to visit.
