Grumpy gran's thoughts

A real find. We really enjoyed this site on a short stay at the end of October, even though he weather was very mixed. No problems if you don the waterproofs. Pros: Very friendly and approachable wardens; Lots of walks straight from site; Also close to Bridport,West Bay and the coast; Quiet and peaceful; Trees and hedges improve the appearance of the site and avoid long uniform arrays of vans; Cons: Pitches are allocated due to differences in size - OK for us on this occasion as we were happy with our pitch, and we have a small van; However, some vans are really too big for the site. Opposite us a member with a monster RV vehicle chose to drive over and churn up the grass on our pitch causing ruts; We are grandparents but don't see why we have to put up with other people's children coming from pitches on other parts of the site and skidding down the hills on their bikes and riding at way over 5mph. It's dangerous for them as they could not stop if they came across an outfit as well as being annoying. Nevertheless we are looking at when we can return in 2021. Understand from the warden that some limited alterations/refurbishment may take place over the closed season. All of us just need to remember to behave responsibly and show consideration for fellow members.

Excellent site

We stayed mid October on a serviced pitch and had a wonderfully relaxing stay. Pitch was allocated on arrival, but we were very happy with it; it had well defined edges but plenty large enough to erect awning. Hard standing however extremely difficult to get pegs in, even with a hammer drill. Cars are mostly parked in front of van, but there is plenty of room. As the site is terraced, with hedges and small trees, the views were great and it felt quite private. As we are still shielding as best as we can, we used our own facilities. Elsan point was spotless. We don’t have a dog, but enjoyed going round the dog walk, through woodland, down to a river and across fields. Didn’t meet a soul, so definitely not crowded and enjoyable for non-dog people. The site is close to all the Jurassic coast beaches, 20 minutes to our favourite in Charmouth. A lovely time to visit, not crowded at all, neither on the beaches nor on site. Staff friendly and helpful, we were allowed a late checkout, too. My partner says next time he’ll try an 18V SDS drill for the pegs!

Peaceful site in beautiful countryside

We stayed here mid October when the site was less than half full and it was glorious. The facilities (some a little outdated) were spotlessly clean, abundant hot water and no queues, indeed very few others around at all. Most people seem to use their own facilities. The best dog walk we have ever come across on a site, beautiful off lead, fenced walk through trees and down to a river. There are also many other farmland walks linking into the site and it's possible to walk to Bridport too. Excellent, safe walking. Pitches are level, the whole site is slightly terraced. Be careful with choice of site as some are in constant shade while others get sun all day and also great views. Serviced pitches have the best sun and views as a rule but they seemed a little 'crowded' compared to the other sites. Reception had allocated a site on arrival but we swapped to a more suitable one easily, after all we're paying for it. Friendly, helpful staff, near drive to many coastal walks and beaches. Lovely overall, would definitely go again.

Pleasant October break

We stayed for a week in mid October, we had one day of rain , the rest of the week was cold, clear with lots of sunshine. We were welcomed by friendly and helpful wardens. Although this isn’t a typical CMC site that doesn’t detract from anything. The plots are allocated and we had a fully serviced pitch which was excellent. Our car was parked in front of the caravan, but as we don’t sit for hours and hours in the caravan this didn’t bother us, in fact we saw some amazing sunsets when we did sit in the caravan. The toilet facilities are also different from typical club sites, some ‘ private’ bathrooms and unisex. As most of our caravanning is, in normal years , in France we were not concerned by this. There is a very good dog walk, with access to a river which our dog loved! The recycling/ rubbish was central, ( on our part of the site) this meant that the wardens didn’t have to drive around and walked around so we could chat as they walked by our caravan. My only criticism and this applies to all CMC sites, is that WiFi isn’t included in the cost of the stay and has to be paid for separately. Incidentally on this site it wasn’t the standard Club WiFi. As most people these days use WiFi on a daily basis and younger members ‘live’ on their phones/tablets / iPads surely the Club should now be including this in the cost of the stay. Would definitely stay again

good location for visiting Dorset

We recently stayed at this site, and found it very pleasant. We visited most of the AONB, including Golden Cap, Charmouth, Lyme Regis, and lots of other beautiful places. The dog walk is fantastic, we wish other sites had the same, plenty of routes to give our dog variety whilst staying for 6 nights. Liked the little hedges between some pitches, it made it feel quite private. We found the instructions to the site easy to follow, although some reviews, prior to our booking, made it sound complicated. It was not. Google street view if unsure. Toilet facilities were clean, didn’t like the fact they were unisex, but it’s not a problem, as the block near reception are individual cubicles. We have our own bathroom in the caravan, and I’m sure most caravans and motor homes do as well, so I’m perplexed as to why a lot of people feel the need to use the sites showers, and expect a full spa experience, when they could use their own facilities. We only use site toilets for the one thing most of us do once a day, for everything else, we use our own bathroom. And with Covid restrictions, we are encouraged by the club, to use our own facilities. Pitch sizes adequate, our 27 feet long, 8 feet wide Swift fitted no problem, with our pick up of 17 and a half feet, fitting nicely in front of the caravan. The movers worked on the gravel, and the pitch we were on was up an incline. All in all a conveniently placed site for visiting Dorset, and we will return.

Personal View of Bingham Grange

Downsides: The toilet/shower facilities are basic and antiquated. The plumbing throughout is functional, but it's Heath Robinson in appearance. Showers heads are vertically above the user in the relatively small cubicles – OK if you want to wash your hair at the same times as everything else but otherwise not very user friendly! A shower cap is a “must” for the ladies. The 2 shower installations in the wooden building building behind Reception are best. The only chemical emptying point is by the site entrance - quite a tramp from many pitches Pitches are narrower than normal CAMC sites, but many are nicely shielded by Laurel hedges between about waist and chest high. There's room for a caravan / motorhome and awning, but the car has to be parked in front of the pitch. Wi-fi is available, costings [in Sep 20] 1 day = £3; 3 days = £7.50; and 7 days = £10.50. The site is still very much as I imagine it was when a private concern. The site roads are pea gravel and dust [which gets everywhere when the wind blows] and the site lighting is minimal – so torches are strongly suggested. There seems lots of potential here which could bring the site up to normal CAMC spec, but for the moment it is well below the normal standard. We feel the nightly charge is quite high for what you get. It is far too expensive compared with other CAMC sites that have far more up-to-date facilities and much larger pitches. Transport-wise, 2 bus services [X51 and X53] run through Bridport [and West Bay] every couple of hours between [respectively] Dorchester and Axmintster; and Weymouth and Axminster. The bus “station” [for want of a better word!] is near the bottom of West Street in Bridport, and there is adequate car parking available there. We didn't explore the “Bus stop 500 mtrs” quoted in the Sites Directory, but we saw no evidence of one and I would expect the frequency of service [if any] to be very limited. Positives There are presently 29 pitches for tenters or motorhomes only. We think those pitches are deemed not suitable for caravans because of the position of established trees making caravan manoeuvering difficult or hazardous. Some sympathetic tree thinning would make those areas available and would significantly increase the site capacity for caravans. There's an area of “dog walking” which is lovely. It's wooded, dogs are free to run off-lead, there's a nice river and the flora is a delight. The whole area is probably the best we have seen in more than 40 years of caravanning – and we don't have a dog! Because of the limited site lighting, evenings of clear skies are a star-watchers delight. The Wardens are doing their very best under challenging conditions. By and large they are working miracles, but they can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. The site has lots of potential, but as outlined above it needs a significant amount of work and investment to make the best of it.

What's The Fuss

We stayed here as part of our current tour. We were slightly concerned by some of the reviews but were very pleasantly surprised. We understand the need for pitch allocation and, luckily it would seem, we got a great pitch (26) with an open view across beautiful countryside. People have said the facilities are in need of upgrade. We, however, found them to be absolutely fine and, as usual, spotlessly clean. I want to say that just because they are not the standard club model they are not lacking in any way. As usual, the hard working staff were cheery and always had time to say hello. If, like us, you use public transport from sites be aware the bus service is useless. However, Voltz taxi runs a great service at a very reasonable price and we were able to enjoy the treasures of West Bay.

Overnight stopover

We only had 1 night here and were allocated a pitch on arrival. This was fairly level gravel and on the edge of the top part of the site with good views. The hedging on one side of the pitch made it more private and provided some grass space but some other pitches looked rather small and a bit cramped in. Our pitch was under an oak tree which was dropping acorns on our motorhome all night! We used 2 out of the 3 types of bathrooms, both clean. One of these was modern with large overhead shower, the other was probably once the mens as it had 2 urinals, separate toilet cubicles and a separate shower, but is currently used as unisex for 1 person. Both our showers in the latter type of bathroom were lukewarm only. A wristband system is being used. The walk from the bottom of the site through the woods by the river onto the public footpath is very pleasant although some information about the route in the check in info would have been useful. The approach to the site on the A3066 is quite narrow and we missed the entrance. Some earlier indication of the turn off would be useful. This site was the most expensive of our tour round Devon and we didn't think it was worth the extra cost.

First and last time

Our first time at this site. We booked a super pitch and as this is allocated we has no choice. Our pitch was on the top level of the site, behind the reception area. The pitch was very small and not having a mover on our van we had to do a lot of manoeuvring to get it on. Most cars on this site have to be parked in front of your van due to the size of the pitch. The roads are also narrow meaning our view for our 3 night stay was the rear end of large motorhome. The road noise was ever present, particularly with motorbikes. There is a lot of movement on this site, we felt it seemed like a stopover site. It's a busy site with lots of comings and goings and we had problems with car and caravan alarms constantly sounding. It's also heavily gravelled which personally we don't like. The dog walk is great, facilities are all unisex and due to the queuing clearly not plentiful enough. This site needs bringing up to club standard. Sadly not a site we shall return to.
