Truly magical

This is a truly magical site and is unlike any I have been lucky enough to have stayed at. Our heart rates dropped, digital free we spent hours just sitting and soaking up the atmosphere, stunning views and relaxing. The drive from Dunnet Bay was itself special and we were lucky enough to have 3 nights here but could have stayed much longer. Our intention is to return next year as soon as we can.

Beautiful setting

Beautiful setting by the Loch, very peaceful with friendly wardens .Keith even goes around picking up the sheep poo which is above and beyond! You are shown where to pitch so don't get a choice and we ended up furthest away from the loch which was a bit annoying. Also our pitch had quite a lot of water on it and it hadn't rained for nearly 2 weeks.. Main reason for not scoring higher is there is no motorhome service point and we can't get a waste water carrier underneath so would restrict the length of stay for motorhomers. There were two water points , one you would have to have a very long hose or the other one you could drive to. However a beautiful site perfect for a few days of relaxation.

Fantastic Peaceful Site

Keith and Sue were great. We had a lovely pitch looking out over the loch. Our first day there was a 'Jubilee Tea' so we got to meet a number of other couples. I would say it's not a great site for families due to lack of washing facilities but for us as a mature couple it was great. It was even warm enough to swim in the loch! We would like to have stayed longer but had already booked our next site.

Fantastic views, with a fabulous welcome from Keith & Sue

We had just one night booked here. What a stunning location. Keith and Sue are fabulous. Keith kindly helped me to my pitch and was happy to help work out how we were going to get it level : we are 8 meters long, before adding the bike rack. He even went and got a bit scaffold board and cut it in two for us to use. It was so gorgeous, peaceful and Keith was out early tidying up. My husband cycled to the site and then cycled the following day up to Bettyshill. It was our favourite place on our 13 night tour of the north east coast. We were extremely lucky with the weather. We will definitely be back. Thanks Keith and Sue.

Fabulous

Very friendly welcome from Keith and Sue, Keith greets and shows each individual the choice of pitch available, ( nice personal touch ) The weather doesn't always behave well, but the whole ambience of the site more than makes up for that. Lots of wonderful views all around the coast, the drives are long and slow but take it easy and enjoy it, get back to the site and relax. Bettyhill store and cafe serve very good food and coffee, Smoo Caves and Dunrobin Castle are really worth the visit, again, great freshly made food at Dunrobin is really good and very reasonably priced. We had two lovely weeks here, and would definitely stay again when in the Highlands.

Still a favourite

We made it back to Altnaharra site after 2 years of lockdowns and what a sense of relaxation from the minute we turned in, we didn’t even have our usual near divorce tuning in the satellite! We love this site although we did notice much more movement with campervans and motor homes using it as a stopover, it was the busiest we have ever seen it which is great for the site but selfishly, I loved the days when there were 2 or 3 vans on the whole site! The site is maybe not for everyone but we are a family who have been coming to Altnaharra since it was called Grummore, many years ago! Our youngest child is now 14 but still loves the space and the freedom that is on offer. Loch Naver is stunning and we swam or paddled in it most days with the stunning snowy backdrop of Ben Klibreck. The new wardens are great. Super helpful and friendly, stopping their gardening to open the shop for my son. We were so sad to leave but have already booked for next year and can’t wait to get back!

Scottish wilderness

We just returned from 3 nights at this site and wanted to thank the wardens who went out of their way to be helpful . We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the site with its magnificent views and the remote landscape in the surrounding area.

Beautiful

What a stunning location this site is.The site it self is unusual and yes some of the pitches are uneven but if you come prepared like you should it’s not a problem.Regarding the water issue as someone who moaned about in an earlier review if they took the time to read about the site they would have known about the water and arrived with enough water without having to use the sites. The wardens were very friendly and helpful. My only disappointed was we had to leave earlier than planned because of car issues but we will certainly return. If you want peace and quiet with stunning views do yourself a favour and go.

Peace and quiet

We have just had an amazing 20 nights at Altnaharra, the scenery is just stunning, we experienced every weather possible but with the change of weather the scenery changed...absolutely loved it. Yes it is miles from anywhere. We did the NC500 from Ullapool to Golspie and lots of bits in between!! One day we travelled over 200 miles then we had two days just siting on site enjoying the sheep and deer roaming the hills. The pitches are a bit rough and uneven and obviously some pitches have better views than others but it's not something that would put us off going again. If you are there for a few days you need to think ahead about shopping and fuel, nothing is close. The Wardens Keith and Sue were cheerful and helpful always ready for a chat. We must have done 1500miles touring the sights from there but every mile was worth it, to return to the calm and quiet of that beautiful site was just incredible..
