Lovely CL

Saw this site from the bus a few years ago and at long last got back to use it. Owner a tad difficult to contact and pay but worked out in the end. Manicured grass, good facilities, access a tad tight for a very long outfit, and do take care at the A69 junction that can be nightmare-ish at times. Note that the Hadrian's Wall bus no longer goes as far as Gilsland and has to be picked up at Greenhead, but there is a connecting service passing the CL.

Pefect for Hadrians Wall

Excellent facilities with well cut grass and good recycling. Lots of ponies, sheep and chickens in the field nearby to keep you amused. Not a great site for Motor homes as the site has 6 EHU's but only 3 or 4 are suitable due to the slope. Good signal on Three, TV tricky but got some Freeview channels to watch the Olympics. You can start the Wall walk from the site.

Great site for all things Roman

The last week in October was not the best weather wise, but this little site was just great.  As we were the only ones there, we pitched as we wanted. Slight slope but nothing too scary just take heed. Ponies and chickens in the field next to us and they sell fresh eggs (the owners not the ponies!). The site handled the heavy rain well and apart from one small squelchy bit was fine.  We found TV reception not good but this was with an aerial and those with satellite may fair better. Wonderful views and really easy access to Hadrian's Wall. Lots of museums, walks and interesting sites within a short drive. This is a quiet, small site in a brilliant position for all things Roman.

Well Worth a Visit

We stayed here for a week in the middle of Sep and we thoroughly enjoyed it,

The site is sloping so be prepared for it, the owner has some blocks you can use beside the bin area. Only met the owner once and that was on arrival, very friendly and full of tips to get us out and about.  I can imagine some finding this CL a bit out of the way but it suited us down to the ground.  Not too far away from civilisation but far enough to enjoy the peace and quiet.

We were there for a week and we found loads to do nearby, spending quite a lot of our time walking long Hadirains Wall.

I recommend you take the short drive up to Walltown Craggs to watch the sunset it was stunning.   This was perfect for us and it seemed it was a favourite of a few others, it was full all the time we were there.   I would definitely consider a return without hesitation.

P.S. When it gets dark, take a step outside and look up.  On a clear night the Milky Way is very clear and the display of stars is breathtaking.

Perfect CL

Spent 3 nights here on our way further north. Spacious field with hook up around 3 sides. Some pitches are sloping so blocks needed (blocks were available next to dust bins if you dont have enough). Water, bins, and waste at one side of field nicely hidden by screening. Grass was short. Pleasent views in all directions and cows, sheep, horses, chickens, and ducks in adjacent fields. Very quiet and peaceful. Ideally situated for visiting many things Roman and walking the wall. Only minor critisism would be the CL sign on the road is somewhat faded so could be missed. Would definately stay here again.

Roaming with Romans!

What a lovely CL. Very rural, right on Hadrians Wall (although it isn't visible here except on the skyline), with gorgeous views, peace and quiet, fantastic birdlife and plenty of very interesting places close by to either walk to or take a short drive. Good for some energetic cycling as well! The CL field is very spacious, with hook ups around edges. Some parts slope a good bit, but not an issue if wedges or blocks are carried. The entrance is quite generous, with a good approach road. The grass was cut short and even though it rained stayed firm. Water, waste with recycling and toilet empty point are all at one side of site, sheltered and tidy. Owner lives up above looking down onto site, and there is some livestock well fenced off, including free range eggs! Chickens occasionally pay a visit, which we found great, nice to see happy hens! We did a lovely walk from site to Thirlwall Castle and part of Hadrians Wall, and Birdoswald Fort is close by as well. Most of the major historic sites such as Vindolanda, Housesteads, Steel Rigg, Cawfields and Chesters are easily reached, and the Hadrians Wall Cycle path is close by. Halwhistle isnt far, with shops, pubs and station. This is a true "get away from it all" site, nice to spend hours sitting out just watching and listening to passing birds, or going a bit further afield and exploring. Highly recommended if you like a nice, well kept, peaceful site.

Very nice CL

Only spent 2 nights here early September but they were blissful. We were the only ones on this very clean, quiet and tidy site and chose it due to its location near Hadrian's Wall before we moved on to the Lakes. Good ale in the pub in Gilsland but the food was a little disappointing. Mobile signals were a bit hit and miss in the area but never a problem not to be bothered when you are on holiday. The Roman fort at Birdoswald is within walking distance with only the first part of your walk on a road, the rest using footpaths across fields. Lovely site.

A Perfect Site

We spent 10 very peaceful days on this site. We pitched on the level but noticed that some blocks were provided for those who might have forgotten theirs and were pitched on the gently sloping area of the field. Mr & Mrs Kennedy were very helpful. This is a very rural and tranquil site and in a perfect spot for exploring Hadrian's Wall and other Roman ruins. Haltwhistle is 3 miles away and has a Sainsbury as well as many other local shops. Cannot recommend this site highly enough, a true CL.

Lovely relaxed site in fantastic location

Thank you Mrs Kennedy and Alison for a really lovely break. we stayed for 3 nights, getting in touch and booking was no problem. When we arrived it was easy to set up on a slightly sloping ( good idea to take some blocks) but very well maintained site with chemical waste and rubbish clearly marked, water and electric hook ups again no problem. We have 3 Collie dogs and sometimes sites have not been particularly welcoming, the opposite was here and they gave us many suggestions for where we could walk them. We spent 3 days walking bits of Hadrians Wall and found the central location good for that. We then moved on to North Northumberland and had a miserable stay (thats another story) so rang Mrs Kennedy could we come back again this was no problem and we finnished off a fantastic few days walking the Wall. I highly recommend this small well run site and will certainly be back next year. Thank you again see you next year!
