Having read some of the reviews about how badly this site sloped, we came prepared to use all of our vast array of levelling equipment. But on arrival, we were pleasantly surprised. The site was completely empty, so we had the choice of any of the 6 pitches. Pitch 1 is the one we chose, which is almost completely level. Pitch 2 is almost level as well. Granted, the rest of the pitches do slope, but nothing like some of the reviews make out. We have been on sites that are a lot worse, and always managed to get our caravan completely level. If people want a billiard table pitch, perhaps they should stick to club sites. As some of the other reviews mentioned, we didn't see the owner, but this was not a problem. All amenities are clearly labelled, just pop your payment in an envelope and leave it in the shed by the entrance. The ground was not at all hard, our awning pegs were easy to get in. Very peaceful if you don't mind countryside sounds i.e. sheep bleating. Buy that's why we like caravanning. Good access to lots of attractions, a lot related to Roman history, and more tea rooms close by than there are days in the week. All in all, a gem of a site. We will definitely be back.
Good location for exploring, but take blocks!
Great location for exploring the wall, being just a 5 minute drive from the Roman Army Museum and 20 minutes from Vindolanda.
As reported by others, the site slopes. A lot. And for certain pitches it slopes both front to back and side to side. It took us quite a while to finally settle on a spot. The ground is also rock hard, making it hard to hammer in awning pegs. A week with a digger and some topsoil would solve these issues and transform the site.
There no grey water disposal point, just chemical.
There are no public footpaths immediate by the site, and as we didn’t see the owners we didn’t know where we could and couldn’t walk with the dogs.
The walk from Gilsland to Birdoswald is highly recommended.

4th vist to the site at end of May. Very enjoyable stay as usual. Very good access to all parts of the Wall.
Mixed bag
This site was easy to get to but unfortunately there was no welcome from the owner, which would have been nice - just polite to greet you and offer assistance/information. We had the pick of the pitches, luckily, and were able to get on the flattest one by the entrance. Some pitches were badly sloping and one visitor changed to our pitch when we left. The site is very near to Hadrian's Wall, with easy access to it down the road. The area is very picturesque and we had some really good walks. The barn on the adjacent farm (mentioned on another review) wasn't an issue. It is a very peaceful spot.
A big slope but great walks
A short walk takes you into Gilsland, which isn’t up to much really, but the walking along the Hadrian’s wall paths is fabulous. Well signposted, historically interesting and just beautiful scenery.
We didn’t see the owner at all, which doesn’t bother us, but I know some people like to be greeted. Our main problem is the hill. If you get in at the bottom then no problem (we got to move after the first night), but the rest of the field is too much of a slope, in my opinion, to hold pitches. We were forced to go sideways on across the hill and, even on the top level, our ramps were not enough. Had a feeling we were going to roll over in the night. That of course didn’t happen. Had we have parked at right angles to the fence in the traditional way, we would have been far too angled for the highest ramps to have been any use.

Third visit to this great site. So handy for walking the Hadrian's Wall path, walking from the site or parking at Greenhead and using the AD 122 bus, and for visiting other nearby attractions. Site slopes but OK with wedges even when 5 units present.
Ideal for Hadrians Wall etc
Just spent the one night on this well laid out and well kept site as we were on route home. Everything was as expected and well labelled. Didn’t see owner but we spoke on the phone about payment instructions. Fresh eggs available to purchase. Would recommend.

[I came, I saw, what a great view]
One of the best locations for a CL if you're doing the 'wall' thing (think Freddie Dibnah) and fairly easy access for a 40ft rig. Some sloping pitches but nothing extreme and the facilities are first class.
The Roman Army museum (part of Vinolanda) is just a short drive away and the Wall Walk just a close.
Plenty of places to get provisions. We chose Waitrose in Hexham and visited the Abbey.
Parking in Hexham is free but confusing. Just avoid the blue and red lined bays, stick to white.
Only downer on the CL was the building of a large barn in a neighbouring field, but the Northumberland Sunshine (aka wind and rain) soon stopped play.
Great stay for anything Roman.
Stayed for 1 night at this lovely ,quiet tranquil CL. Sat nav took us straight there with no problem. Very nice well kept site. Location is great for sight seeing. We went to Walltown Crags to see the sunset which was lovely by the way and beautiful views and we went to Housteads to the Roman wall which was only 15 minutes away . Like another review said ,step outside when its dark and look up to the sky , it's full of beautiful bright stars. We had a lovely stay here and woukd definitely come back.

Very good site. Good size, grass short. Good views. About 30 mins straight forward access from the M6. No difficulty entering the site. Sloping but wooden planks provided so easy to get level. Owner not present on arrival, but did not matter. Very convenient for walking the Hadrian's Wall trail - short drive to plenty of road side parking at Greenhead, then AD122 bus (free for OAPs) for stops all along the Wall. Could walk to Greenhead from site if did not want to use car. Good beer at Greenhead pub. Also spent a day in Newcastle - car to Haltwhistle, plenty of free parking at station, then train to Newcastle. Sainsbury's at Haltwhistle.
