Stayed September 2019. This is a very spacious CL with well maintained grass pitches. We had EHU and a tap at our pitch. There is a small toilet, which we can’t comment on, as we use our own facilities. A gate at the bottom of the site leads directly to National Trust woodland, which is great for walks if you don’t suffer from vertigo! It is a 10 minute walk to an award winning, community owned, dog friendly village pub. Mrs Porter will send you detailed directions to the site, avoiding the worst of the steep hills and narrow lanes. Leyburn is worth visiting, especially on market day.
Sites and Dogs
We recently visited this site and for the first four days we were very impressed with the site facilities, the walks from the site and the friendly greeting from the owners. Then a van and caravan arrived and pitched at the bottom of the site. After the caravan was pitched and the awning erected we noticed the van doors being opened and we heard dogs barking. Very soon after although the day was a rainy one which was why we had stayed on camp the couple assembled their dogs to go for a walk. FIVE dogs of various breeds and sizes. I will keep this brief by stating that the last three days of our holiday were spoiled by these dogs barking at every dog that passed the caravan site on the public footpath and at each dog that came from other caravans on the site. As we were able to go to various locations during the days we were not subjected to the barking, during this period, but had to contend with it on our return. On our departure day Mr.Porter came to say farewell and I passed on these same comments to him and he was apologetic stating that he and his wife were aware of the number of dogs, but thought that by putting them at the bottom of the site they would cause no harm. He agreed that the problem of passing dogs had not occurred to them and was sorry if our stay had been spoiled. Now my point is why should we dog free families be subjected to the mindless people who seem to become immune to their dogs barking and surely while we have no objection to one or two well behaved and controlled dogs there should be a limit to any increase over this amount of dogs being allowed on the registered sites.
Scat Close - Amazing
Our first time at Scar Close. We live nearby in Bedale but we love using CLs.
The entrance is nice and wide and directions provided were spot on.
The site is very large for a 5 van site. A surprise was each EHU had its own tap, so we had a serviced pitch which was great.
The toilet was useful and saved us needing to use our own. We loved the footpath right next to our pitch - lovely scenic walk into Richmond.
The rain was persistent and the site became a little soggy - but with that amount of rain it is to be expected.
Elsan and rubbish/recycling was neat and tidy.
We will be back :)
Total endorsement.
I certainly agree with the many reviews praising this site, it is well kept and in a nice location. More especially, I give my sincerest thanks to the owners for their sympathy and assistance when, close to our moving on time, my wife had to go into hospital. The offer to allow me to stay on until I could sort out the situation was much appreciated. Thank You. Allan S.
Excellent CL
This is a fabulous CL. It’s 5 minutes from Richmond in a lovely little village.
The field is well kept, large & level so you get loads of space, plus electric & water at each pitch, & also a WC.
There isn’t a dog walking area but there are a few walks directly down to the river (very steep), & you can walk into Richmond in about 40 mins.
Lots to do in Richmond & the surroundings, but if you want to stay local the community to local pub, the George & Dragon is a CAMRA winning pub with really cheap hearty food, also very friendly & allow dogs.
Would definitely recommend this site & will return.
Hideaway.
The owner's are very welcoming and so helpful . The site is reasonably level for pitching with plenty of hook ups and stand pipes for fresh water. It is maintained to a high standard and pleasantly located for Richmond and ideal for a relaxing getaway.
Richmond stop over
We called in here for two nights enroute to Northumberland the site was easy to find and the pitch in the beeches part was fine with lovely views.
we never met the owners however mrs proctor was very nice and helpful when booking.
Two walks from the site one to Richmond with two alternative ways and one to Dunholme we did both and preferred the latter very peaceful with Dunholme a good turn around point with a nice pub but note that on sundays they only do Sit down meals no snacks or sandwiches.
The pub local to the site has nice outside seating to the rear however it only does craft beers and lagers which wasn’t for me.and being dog friendly meant you had to step over the dogs to get past as the ignorant owners couldn’t bother to shift them that is till I told them to shift them apart from that the guy serving was pleasant and I’m sure the food would be nice.
Overall a good site for a stop over.
Excellent CL
This is an excellent CL. Access was easy, directions provided my Mrs Porter were easy to follow. Very dog friendly as is the pub a short walk away. Easy access to dog walks direct from the site. We had to leave a day early, but wished we could have stayed longer, I'm sure we will be back.

Brilliant CL
Just arrived back home from this Brilliant Quite CL, we booked for 10 days shame we could not stayed longer, the CL is in a lovely location & is very quite with walks from the site, also the local pub does super food & ales & is dog friendly, another pub which does nice food & ale is The Holly Hill Inn also dog friendly, a walk into Richmond is well worth the effort with a good selection of shops & eateries, while in Richmond a place worth a visit is the Richmond castle & grounds which has views looking down upon the river below,
from the CL is the near by is the garrison town of Hipswell with a good selection of supermarkets & other local shops, around 8mls is the market town of Leyburn & also Reeth near by, just up the road from Reeth there is some super walks in Swaledale & Arkengarthdale,
Many thanks to Mrs & Mr Porter for this superb CL
Very pleasant two night stay.
We have just returned from a two night stay at this fabulous CL site. As there has been a lot of rain recently the field was closed but we parked on the hardstanding next to it. Site easily found due to excellent directions e-mailed to us by the owner. Had a warm welcome from the owners who informed us that perhaps walking through the woods to Richmond wasn't a good idea because of the recent weather. We walked into Richmond on the road which took about 45 mins on fairly quiet roads. The site is very peaceful and quiet. All in all a very pleasant stay and will definitely return.
