An Oasis within easy reach of Leeds

Savile Town Wharf Marina is a jewel in West Yorkshire. We were a little dubious as we approached the site as it’s surrounded by mainly bed factories and UPS and bus depots, but as we turned into the site evertthing changed. The site is within the Dewsbury arm of the Calder and Hepple canal and is all on flat grass. The owners worked hard to fit us in an short notice for a 2 night stay visiting family in Leeds. On site is a great pub, the Leggers, which sells a wide range of cheep beers. Although the pub itself is upstairs, the toilets, showers and lots of benches are on the ground floor. There’s also another toilet block at the other end of the car park which were very clean. There is a 24 hour ASDA around 10 minutes walk away which is great for stocking up on provisions. A further 10 minutes uphill is Dewsbury Train Station from which it’s easy to get into Leeds in 10-15 minutes with return trains running up till 23:30 and are around £6 return. Good value for money, we’ll be back soon and recommend to all

From the partner of a wheelchair users perspective

Arrived early afternoon, found a pitch and set up. No problem, the pitch we chose was flat in both directions. Had a quick reccee to the pub and the first problem.......it's upstairs. No disabled access. My wife could not get up. And if she did the toilets were downstairs. Went out in the evening to another pub with access. Off to the Leggers fo a solo nightcap and well impressed with the selection of ales and the warmth of the welcome. Next day walked to the station .Got halfway there (ASDA B&Q) and realised that the hill we had to climb would probably be more than a match for my wheelchair pushing ability. Just made it, red of pace and panting like a ......Had to sit for 5 mins before crossing the road to the station. Went into Leeds for the day. All rail staff and passengers very helpful with the chair. Never saw anyone from the site, but as we had paid in advance it was not an issue. Look forward to going back in the summer.

Nice site, shame about the area

I had never previously visited the Dewsbury area but wanted to go to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and this site was very well located for that purpose. I initially had difficulty locating the site because it is hidden from view by high walls. The best way to describe how to find it is drive into the car park of the Leggers Arms pub, we drove past it on the first attempt. The staff were friendly and welcoming, the pub has character and serves very simple meals, e.g. Chilli with chips or rice (also a vegetarian option) and excellent real ale. The campsite toilets are a portacabin and are unisex but are kept very clean. There is a shower for general use at all he marina office/pub building. Ideal for regular CL users who tend to use their own facilities. It's very handy for Asda, B&Q and any number of other retail outlets because it is in the centre of a very industrial area mixed with lots of retailers. Sadly the area lets it down and nothing can be done about that. We intended to stay for 3 nights but after the first night of listening to motorcycles being driven at speed around the neighbouring streets we decided to move on. Maybe we are just a bit too faint hearted, there were 3 other caravans on site and their occupants seemed to be perfectly happy. I hate to be negative but would I return? Unlikely.

What a delight

After a drive through the industrial area you arrive to time warp of quaint buildings around the old narrow boat dock. People from the 20 or so boats are as friendly as the staff of the pub. This is a much loved local facility that posses character. A ten minute walk along the canal spur puts you at the double locks and out into open countryside. What a delight, just what a CL should be.

Great little CL site.

Date of stay 16/17/18 June This is the 3rd time on this site ,plenty of pitch room electric hook ups very close to pitch as with most of water supplies. Shared toilets on site within the pub no problem there, nice little cafe on site plenty of seating around the outside of pub and some picnic benches on the camp site, play area for kids plenty of good walks around ,10 mins walk into Dewsbury and a very good market there.agree that the road towards the site could do with tidying up a bit but that's local councils job to see to that, but it does not detract from the welcome on this site, owner is a very likeable chap and if you arrive on site when office closed as long as you have contacted before hand to check availability you just arrive and pick your spot.Consider this to be pretty good value as some club sites without toilet or shower facilities cost same or more. Will be there again soon. 😎

Great level CL site for walkers, cyclists & Beer drinkers

Just come back from a great 3 night stay at this lovely friendly CL at the end of a canal arm surrounded on two sides by moored boats. I wouldn't totally agree with the last review re-in a poor area, it's more an industrial area with a few littered streets which is a shame but typical of a city town suburb. This quiet Cl was £13/night incl. electric (May-17) with a shared toilet with the canal boaters and pub goers which was cleaned daily and fine for us at a great price, the shower was by token obtained from the great Leggers upstairs pub. We had a lovely Chicken curry and half rice/chips there for £5 one musical evening which was fantastic for the price. Directions Tip: Do not turn up Warren St. which your sat nav may take you up but go through the main entrance of the Leggers pub & Coffee House then go straight through the car park onto the gated CL field (see photos in Google maps of the site on the Leggers Inn photos) The Marina/ CL office is only open from 9-3 Mon-Sat (confirm when booking) so outside these hours just choose a clearly marked pitch, connect up your electric get your water from the taps the boaters use and open the bar and check in the next day :-) Our main reason for visiting was to go on the Transpennine Real Ale Trail as the railway station is just a 15min walk past a 24hr Asda, The 8 station train / pub journey does not disappoint but suggest you do it midweek if possible as could get crowded in the pubs on summer w/e's and make sure you just catch local trains. Its's great for cyclist being on the Sustans cycle route no. 69 and 100yds from the Spen Valley Greenway, a 7mile traffic free route to Huddersfield. We enjoyed a lovely canal walk passing 2 pubs on route (The Brewers Pride & The Bingley Arms) to the Navigation Inn, Wakefield (6.5mile flat walk) where we had a lovely meal and a taxi home for £11 (15mins 7.5 miles by car) which we thought was well worth it. We were supposed to be coming back by train from Wakefield (£4.50) but the lovely real ales of the area had got the better of us. We will be back......

Nice site, but not in a good area

The caravan pitches next to the marina are nice and flat and the owners of the canal boats are friendly. It was nice having the pub there too, however, this CL is in a really run down, poor part of Dewsbury. Noisy 'boy racers' cruise the streets constantly and on our second day a group of these stopped and started throwing bottles at the people drinking in the pub garden. This aggressive behaviour was upsetting and having 2 small children with us we really didn't feel safe so we packed up and left immediately
