Refillable Gas Systems

Ok here goes - being a Safefill owner that is the one I know most about and I like it because I can see the level of gas - it is lightweight and the saving over the price of Calorlite is substantial if you are a heavy user.  It makes even more sense to use a refillable if you are going across the water as you can refill there - whereas Calor is not obtainable (not anywhere I have been anyway).  There were three sizes but the grapevine said the smallest has been discontinued.

There is also Gaslow which until I saw a recent post I thought was a permanent fixed refillable probably more convenient for a Motorhomer, but I see they have free standing cylinders too.  When I looked at Gaslow it appeared to be far more expensive to set up for a caravanner than Safefill - but I could have been looking in the wrong place.

Gasit - is another I believe but I know nothing about it.

ISTR that BP are pulling out of the LPG market. I'll try and check with my daughter who is a business analyst with them, or was until last week.

I was under the impression that BP had got rid of all their LPG rigs?? Perhaps a few have retained theirs. As I am late to the Party, Happy New Year all you Non EHUers!!  Spent all of Christmas and New year suffering from ‘Aussie Flu’ - can’t wait for those long summer days!๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

I think they still have a few on Motorways probably due to a contractual obligation but the rest have gone now I think.

One good thing about diesels being banned soon there may be more of a push for LPG cars which would mean  more service areas offering gas hopefully.  Shell seem to be upgrading the LPG pumps and there seem to be more of them also so that's good news.

More like as the gas runs out at the BP stations it is not being replaced resulting in a staggered closure of these pumps.

for anyone interested, an overview of refillable gas tanks/bottle options/costs is in this month's MMM magazine.

the 'cashier/supermarket' is a Co-Op, i assumed they manged the fuel, too......

just looked the Coop website and they have several filling stations, a number with LPGsmile

Apparently BP do still sell LPG at some of their service stations, about 80 in total, having apparently got lots of gov incentives to install LPG capacity.  A searchable map is HERE. Only two once you get north of Edinburgh/Glasgow. Given the government subsidies, there should hopefully be security of supply for a while.

Does anyone know if the number of UK outlets for LPG (at the lump, so to speak) getting more or less.

It just appears to me that there are less forecourts offering the option of LPG, although with 'education', there may be a larger number of those left who are allowing folk to refill appropriately designed cylinders.  Am I right or wrong in this assumption?

I expect the determining factor is the number of vehicles running on LPG. I somehow doubt even if we all had refillable systems whether it would be enough to sustain it being widely available if that was the only use? Although totally unscientific I have only seen one filling station in MK selling LPG, there must be more but they are not that widespread.
