How much do you pay for your gas ?

Just cost me £32 for 2.75 kg of butane. A camping gaz 907 is the only thing that fits in my van but to make matters worse I gave them back 0.75 kg because I needed a full bottle  for Silverstone .l don't use much gas and mostly rely on a solar panel but CampingGaz make Dick Turpin look like a benevolent gentleman. Anyone with a campervan got a better solution ?

I recently decided that I didn't need a big 10kg Gas Light (BP) cylinder so I wanted to exchange it for a 5kg one,at Homebase. I went to the Folkestone branch and was informed that I could not swap a 10kg for a 5kg one! I would have to surrender my 10kg and get my £12.50 deposit back, when I bought it the deposit was about £38, and then buy a 5kg cylinder for £55.91, this was a deposit of £38 and £21.91 for the 5 kg of gas. thats £4.38 per kg.

I got my £12.50 deposit back and will buy a cylinder in France, where I now am for a while, with the correct fitting for a lot less.

Doc, no one likes to be ripped off, and that was exactly was was attempted with you....

however, as ypu wont know when your french bottle will run out, the chances are ot could be while you are cooking dinner in the UK, and then youd be back to square one...looking for cheap bottled gas in the UK.

of course, you could exchange it on your next french trip, but it might still be partially full....etc, etc...

some folk use a uk bottle and a foreign bottle to hedge their bets...run out in france with the french bottle, change it there using the UK bottle until the change is convenient....and vice versa here...

however, even this sensible approach means you are tied into the uk bottled market which loves, so much, to take your hard earned....

i guess you dont use much has, otherwise, being a traveller to the continent, you might have considered a refillable. you could put your £12.50 towards one.....

Yes, I agree with BB Doc. The purchase of a refillable is money well spent! I can't imagine going back to the gentle clutches of Calor! You can buy the adaptor for the French market so best of both worlds- just change the terminal and you always have your refillable cylinder- Safefill does a 10.3 kg one!

The time has arrived Safefill about to be purchased, Hoping the large one will fit in gas locker, we collect MH next week after some warranty work and will be calling at local caravan shop who have all three sizes in stock and if we can get it in the large one is our weapon of choice.

The empty Calorlite is currently on eBay aNd will go some way to paying for the Safefill bottle.....goodbye and good riddance Calor

Good decision Hugh! You'll love it! SAFEFILL- your safeguard against ripoff gas prices! Technology moves on- time for all old steel cylinders to be returned to the smelting works and turned into something useful!!

Although we have the large Safefill 10kg bottle, why is it that when you are on a site miles from the nearest refill station, you seem to use twice as much gas as normal?

I an toying with the idea of buying a second 5kg bottle as a backup just in case as sometimes not always convenient to top up before a long trip.

always good to have a fallback position in most things....

although we have a refillable system, i will be taking a Spanish adaptor next time to Spain so as to make use of local (cheap bottled) gas, should a filling station not be convenient...

Write your comments here...Yes I think a second back up bottle is on my wish list - I keep eyeing them on the shelves!

I don't know why everybody doesn't use Safefill. I have refilled mine 3 times in under a year  so it's now paid for itself. £75 for a bottle seems like a lot. But 3 refills for £6 somthing. Loads cheaper. But I cook & use the heating. And in hot weather the fridge is far more efficient on gas. Just spent a week in a field without hookup. So hot water as well. Half a cylinder gone. About £3.50. And people said it would never pay for itself.
