Cost of EHU at CLs

Hello

we are new to using CLs. To save mehaving to  ring each and every site I look at, is there an average as to what EHU costs at Cls? They usually seem to say electric hook up available but do not say at what cost. Thanks

As me ,and I think would be the majority, but then I do not keep raising the EHU metering ideawink

Nor me. I can understand why some like the idea though. Last year at St Neots C&CC site it was hot. We chose a pitch with dappled shade. Across the way from us were an older couple in an eriba,. They were taking power from tow car. Presumably getting age discount on a grass pitch with no EHU. Not needed.

Whilst I understand no one wants to pay more, me included, the notion of paying for what one uses makes sense to me, be it CL or club site. To my mind, there’s nothing like paying for what one uses to heighten awareness. Despite the costs involved, the fact is that energy usage is a hot topic , or should be.

Couldn't  agree more there’s nothing like paying for what one uses to heighten awareness. and that's the reason I don't like it.

We will  spend quite some time this year again on a metered pitch and although there is a reasonable daily allowance that we have been able to keep to its still meant having to think about it ,  be a little more frugal and that's been without the need for heating. If we get any cold weather I will get a cheap gas supply organised even if it costs more than the electrical option, illogical no doubt but that's how much I dislike "meter watching"

...and DD's post highlights how cheap gas can easily make expensive EHU not needed....we can do the same, as do those caravanners who have moved to Safefil (or similar).

not only that, "sur le Continent", where metered leccy is more common, gas can be purchased far more cheaply than at home (as AD suggests) which, again, helps negate high EHU costs. Many will also run fridge/freezers from gas, its that cheap.

for MH/vanners with small Calor bottles its not that easy as there is still a huge financial disadvantage to 'using their precious gas' (as OH might say) as it costs a bomb and bottles might need changing far more often.

i like the suggestion reported by Ocsid with electric bought in 'chunks', spread over the stay and his post showed that, even in October, they were managing with just 6kw a day.

TTDA feels that, as a low electric user, there is is an element (see what i did there?wink) of imbalance where everyone is charged the same bit usage varies, others have agreed with this.

perhaps the 'take it or leave it' option, with either prepay cards or a simple 'access or not' to the hook up point might be the way forward.

in amongst these threads we rarely see comment regarding lowering the overall site/club usage which has to be a good thing, doesnt it, on many levels.

even the club has highlighted the rising cost of electric in its reports, but changing folk's habits will need more than a notice in the gents/ladies.

CL owners must also be feeling the pinch with ever more electric kit being installed and used in vans these days.

simpler, perhaps, for a CL to manage a 'yes/no' access to EHU, but with prices and usage rising, surely 'simple' would be a start?

id happily pay less for my pitch most of the year, with no EHU at all (as we do on THS sites)....equally, id be happy to have a lower amperage on club/CL site, nor would a meter or prepay be an issue, but i just cant see ever higher prices and rising usage being sustainable for those with low margins like CLs.

We haven't yet come across a metered supply in France. Just as well as I think Mr M has been at work re the refillable gas, as he has with Diesel tax, At the current exchange rate, at the cheapest outlets, it's 76p a litre, a fair bit more expensive than here.

never had this problem in Europe, our long stay site pitch will be approx €14 per night including 7kw of lecce, and 14c per kw if you go over, never gone over limit, only item we use on gas is outside BBQ and minimum cooking indoors , we carry 2xCalor light and always come home with gas, eat lots of fish, 10mins on BBQ to cook with lots of Spanish fresh salad stuff.

According to a recent article on Money Saving Expert, as far as cost goes, it is more economical to turn off the heating  when you are not at home, using a timer, than to leave it on at a lower temperature, so presumably the same applies to caravans and MHs.

Unfortunately not all van heating systems can be controlled via a timer.

Because we are not directly paying for what we use if a supply is unmetered, being cost conscious goes out of the window IMO.

At a CL we used in October, the owner apologised for the fact that he had had to increase the nightly fee from £12 last year to £15 this year due to the amount of electricity visitors were using.

Metering on sites would be fairer.  Those with smaller, better insulated vans would pay less, those with refillable gas bottles could choose to use gas instead to keep costs down.

Rufs, many spanish sites (and certianly ACSI) include 4kw and thereafter its charged at 40c per kw, a bit different to your experience.

Steve, fuel generally has gone up in France recently, but in Spain diesel is around a Euro a litre and their LPG is on a par with our own. however, a 11kg Repsol bottle can be purchased for around €12-14 which is just over 50c per litre, so very cheap and accessible everywhere, sites and service stations.

although i have a 11kg gaslow, my other locker 'slot' is occupied by a Repsol when we visit Spain....nice when we settle on our long term site, no van moving required....also keeps us away from any leccy excess.

ill fill with fuel and LPG on the way to Poole and may make it to Irun before needing a fill of diesel.....we'll find out.
