An open letter to the Community Manager - reviews

Dear Rowena,

I think the time has come to press you on the issue of comments made on reviews. I know you are very busy but the situation is becoming rather discordant and inconsistent.

You have posted some information concerning the content of reviews recently but I can see nothing from you regarding the posting of comments. David Klyne, in the thread titled Reviews, posted some words on the subject on 04.08.19 and my post (pictured below) seeking further information was also reported to you in an effort to establish clarification. Unfortunately, I’ve not seen a response from any source.

Yesterday (10.08.19), a new review appeared which was clearly in breach of the Community Guidelines and several of us commented explaining how the Guidelines answered the poster's question. Seemingly legitimate responses were subsequently Deleted User fairly quickly yet the review remained until early afternoon today when it was quite rightly removed. Can you imagine the confusion this caused?

I have no intention of querying moderation here but, obviously, different people have different views on what is acceptable and what is not and it is that very difference and lack of guidance relating to comments which is causing a less than standardised approach.

Therefore, may I please ask for a definitive clarification of what is, or is not, permitted in comments on reviews to be included in the Guidelines? We, as posters, need to know what is acceptable to yourself and the moderators so that we can all sing from the same song sheet.

Regards.

TW

You can train a seal but you can't educate an orange.

Don't know why I posted that HD. No offence intended to anybody - it just came into my head.

It’s an age thing ET, a lot of older folk lack empathy I’ve noticed, in fact I’ll use a trick I’ve seen used. . .’no offence’. Ergo I am now blameless👍🏻😊

So ,do you find the term "idiot " offensive undecided

Posted on 14/08/2019 08:46

thought you said: this is my last post on this thread as you just don't get it wink

Actually yes, it is could be very offensive, Idiot was formerly a legal and psychiatric category of profound intellectual disability in which a person's mental age is two years or less, though this has changed in recent years and while I would use it informally I find the term offensive when used on a public forum (or meeting) and would never think of calling a warden, or indeed anyone in a job, or dealing with on a formal basis, an idiot.

I certainly would never name anyone. However, I don't see that a generalised comment is against the rules. That's certainly not how I would interpret them.

Not that we have ever had a problem and my generalised comments generally run along the lines of the "hard working warden team".

If generalised comments are banned, I don't see how anyone can leave an accurate review. Dealings with the staff are part of the overall experience of your time on site and should form part of the review.

agree with Steve, how can it also be acceptable to mention 'helpful' staff by name.

wouldnt it be better not to have this 'list' of wardens and their sites (anyway, who cares which warden is where, except where folk know someone 'good' or 'bad' will be there) and not to have name badges either...

does the club, or its members, want/need to be on first name terms with the wardens?

having said that, I do read name badges and I will address someone by their name if I feel I need to (CC or Sainsburys) but a warden list, what does it acheive other than statements about who can be traced to where.

pointless.

I do like reviews such as 'The mail warden was most nasty as he told me off for arriving a mere 40 mins early when he finally came to the reception at 12 O'clock'. Always makes me chuckle.

Quite agree Steve. I think we must maintain a degree of common sense over such things.  If someone is writing a review that encompasses their whole stay on a site that should include not only the facilities, the convenience of the site and what can be done from that location but also general comments on customer service which is an important element of any serviced based organisation. There is a world of difference between saying I was not so impressed with the welcome at reception and saying the tall lanky one was exceptionally rude which could lead the the identification of the person concerned. To me a review that only concentrates on the staff service element is not a review, and this has been the case recently will some of the reviews that have subsequently been Deleted User.

The danger we face if any element of comment of customer service is removed  is that we will just drive people away from reviewing on this website to the likes of Tripadvisor the Club have immediately lost control of what is said.

Agree DK, customer service is an essential part of the experience, and as such merits a mention. But sadly a small percentage of folks are using the review platform to air personal grievances, perhaps thinking they are anonymous and can get away with being nasty and offensive.

I thought reviews were there to help potential visitors find a site that might suit their requirements, more in terms of location, facilities, quality of pitching surface, space, what’s of interest close by, what are transport links like, are there nice walks from the site, is it a good site for children, dogs, family groups, adventurous types etc.....

I simply cannot understand the fixation with reviewing staff so personally. Yes they can make or break a site, but in my experience of Club Sites, we have never come across one so poor that it merited being personally nasty or abusive to anyone. Nor has a member of staff ever required me to raise a complaint about them as an individual. Staff are just like the visitors, some offer a smile and a chat, some are quietly efficient, some are no doubt weary after dealing with a full season of being at the beck and call of all sorts of visitors. They are simply human beings, in infinite variety.🙂

I have noted that the majority of "reviews?" that rant about site staff, and am sure any site staff who watch/post on here wiil have also noted, unless there is a pattern, are normally it seems, a self inflicted problem caused by the reveiwerundecided
