Non-members on CLs

No names (just yet...).

On a CL (which has recently changed hands) the other week when a single guy in VW T5 home conversion turns up late at night and is away again 6am the next morning.  When speaking to the CL owner the next morning I said I was surprised to see he'd let someone stay in a van with no toilet (given that the CL has no toilets).  He seemed a little vague as to whether the person was a club member (I suspect he wasn't).

Is either issue acceptable?  Certainly I think the no toilet issue is a complete no no and I'm not over the moon about letting non members in just out of greed (well what other reason is there?).

They were as you describe which made no difference since we didn't have EHU facilities in the van and Β£2 to Β£3 a night was the going rate. In those years I used around 5 or 6 different  ones a year so until I was free to spend most of my time abroad probably visited around 50 spread around England and Wales , Scotland I cant remember finding one and we used club or private sites as appropriate

As you well know we use CL on a regular basis. The vast majority request ones Membership No. when making a booking, either over the phone  or online. Regardless of that I always supply it as a matter of course. There are a few that request to view my membership card, but it is certainly in the minority.

I always provide number when booking, whether by phone or e-mail. Never been asked for a card but you probably use more CLs than most

Give a girl a break I am on holiday you know πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ system to slow.

My thoughts for what its worth, the guy may well have been a member, the CL owner being new probably forgot to ask for proof of membership (not many do ask)

Could the T5 owner have a porta potti on board, its possible. He could easily just have a small bucket with lid.

We have seen this in France and on the NC500. Use it overnight then take to emptying point in the morning and empty said bucket, rinse out and put away for next night. Those of us old enough surely remember this from our early years camping.

I think if it was me and I was bothered by it. I would have a nice friendly chat with the CL owner, if as the OP says he's new then he might like some guidance.

Or on the other hand I might just mind my own business and enjoy my stay.

Staggering in this day and age, but back when we first toured, the Club was so hoity toity about what might try and spend a night on one of its sites, it wasn’t uncommon for us to have to let a Warden peer into our camper van, and demonstrate how the pop up roof and bed worked! I was much more easy going in those days, but woe betide the nosy so and so that might try the same nowadays.

As the OP is so fascinated by the toileting arrangements of others, I can confirm that this last 18 months or so has seen far more toilet tents erected next door to small campers than we have ever seen before. On both CLs and Club Sites. There were three on Marazion when we stayed. I didn’t inspect them though.

All I can say is that if the Opening Poster really has "threebarkingdogs" then give me the single guy in the T5 any day of the week.

I started caravanning in 1980 and have always used a porta potti of some kind up until a cassette loo in 2005.

They can be handy. 28 years ago, after an orchidectomy following testicular cancer I made th error of sitting on a hospital toilet whilst having a row of clips across my lower abdomen. Getting up was pure agony and from then on until release it was water only for me.

I had an old very tall porta potti in the garage which was tall. I gave my neighbour a drawing of how to build a dais to raise a further 4''. Later gave it away to the husband of a friend of my wife after he had a hip operation. Very useful.
