Non-members on CLs

No names (just yet...).

On a CL (which has recently changed hands) the other week when a single guy in VW T5 home conversion turns up late at night and is away again 6am the next morning.  When speaking to the CL owner the next morning I said I was surprised to see he'd let someone stay in a van with no toilet (given that the CL has no toilets).  He seemed a little vague as to whether the person was a club member (I suspect he wasn't).

Is either issue acceptable?  Certainly I think the no toilet issue is a complete no no and I'm not over the moon about letting non members in just out of greed (well what other reason is there?).

Andy

I know that the club take complaints seriously as some years ago I reported a site for dodgy electrics.  The next review, 2 years after my complaint, said that the EHU bollards were on both sides of the field whereas when we stayed they were only on one side.  Coincidence…..hmm

JohnM, the CL referred to by CY was for a different reason. As far as we know, it is not the CL referred to by the OP.

I stand corrected Tinwheeler, thanks, but it could still be for a multitude of reasons why the 'offending' campervanner didn't arrive until late and left early. I could dream up dozens of scenarios, any one of which might be correct.

I have no memory of the CL prices in 1980 when I was first using them but of course back then there were, generally no toilets or showers or hook ups. Anybody remember the costs?

CLs were generally less busy then

Of course it could but if suspicion exists, it surely needs to be followed up.

I'm wondering if the new CL owner has been given any guidance by the club. If not, mistakes are bound to happen so that’s even more reason to make sure the club is aware.

Really, all cash in hand you mean, tax avoidance sort of thing? I remember paying by cheque actually.

Are these CLs not businesses? I've no idea but I would assume there would be some record keeping?

Four out of six CLs that I have visited this year have requested payment by bank transfer if possible. All have requested my membership number at the time of booking and one of these even came back to me asking if my number was correct. It is a very old membership number which, apparently, is in a slightly different format to more recent ones. Somebody is checking information given.

There must be records kept by the CL owner for all the bookings made in advance. I'm sure, if he were so inclined, the tax man could quite easily check the bookings register if tax avoidance / evasion was suspected.

On one occasion last year I had to book a CL 'on-line' (the only option) and there was no request for my membership number. Nothing was checked when I arrived on-site, not even my name when I went to pay. This CL is now no longer in the network.

We campervaned for over 40 years (6 vans in total) and were avid CL users. Fortunately we were in the " live and and let live era". We did not care or question if  the others were club members, or how stringent the site owners were. It made no difference to our holiday enjoyment. My main thrust is that the Cl system probably needs updating to the modern era, particularly regarding the viability of starting or improving a site with a 5 van limit impediment. My hope is that future generations can enjoy the freedom of the less regimented  versions of sites. There I hope that explains simply my viewpoint.

I suspected as much regarding CL usage.

Was I Dave? I don't think I did so nothing to apologise for, I can only post on what you tell us all on here and you never mentioned using one just expensive club sites, I don't suppose you'll name the CL? Might be useful for other's travel plans, it must have been a  good one, up to club standards, for you to have used it

As you say you use them why do you want to condone possibly endangering them?

I could tell you which one wink

Its very nice by all accounts.

I may have paid a deposit by card but rarely been asked for a deposit (last time on a CL was 2019). As said earlier, I normally proffer membership number when booking.

The tax man could indeed check the proffered bookings register which would of course tally with any tax returns. laughing

Whereas over best part of 40 years I never have. Maybe things have recently changed but in my recent visits to CLs I never have. That is why I consider smart apps have little relevance here

As you well know we use CL on a regular basis. The vast majority request ones Membership No. when making a booking, either over the phone  or online. Regardless of that I always supply it as a matter of course. There are a few that request to view my membership card, but it is certainly in the minority.
