C&CC to Close Their Forum

I noticed a discussion on the above forum saying that the C&CC are going to close their forum from the end of this month. Some members have had an email with this information, although I have not received that email. They don't really give an explanation as to why but they are encouraging members to use other forms of Social Media. Only problem is that those members that don't use other "Social Media" are shut out from communications with fellow members.

They have also confirmed the closure of their Oxford and Isle of Wight sites. The reasons are:- "Oxford faced road infrastructure challenges and external development disruptions, while Adgestone's popularity has declined over the years, needing significant upgrades to return it to the standard that members rightly expect." Shame about Oxford, especially as we no longer have Bladon Chains. Another UK city without a campsite in reach by easy public transport.

The CMC Facebook page is slightly better as you can see some member posts but I think the Club hide a lot of posts so as not to overshadow their own use which is mainly for publicity.

David, couldn't it also be because they are removing any comments that are critical of the Club?

Nellie

It could well be but if they are trying to persuade members to use Social Media, like Facebook, it needs to be available to members I would have thought? It depends what they want. Do they want to shut any adverse comment down which might be what you are suggesting or do they just want members to post happy-clappy stuff? I do find the C&CC a bit secretive and far less likely to share information compared to the CMC.

A question for those that know how to do these things. The C&CC are suggestion members use other social media like Facebook. Having just had a look at their Facebook page I can't see any way to post other than on the threads started by the Club?

Hi David

Apparently you cannot post! You can only reply to an opened post, this post being started by the CCC.

As they say,you couldn't make it up.

It would appear they have silenced their membership🙁

That never happens, all that does happen is posters move to other more open and tolerant forums which the Clubs cannot control, don't have the time to follow and cannot respond to. My own view it is better to keep it all in house warts and all.

I tend to agree with your last sentence. Closing the forum and stifling free expression certainly isn’t going to promote goodwill amongst the membership.

Like many others, I am sure, I have fired off an email to the C&CC to ask how to use the alternatives they suggest, like Facebook. Whilst I got a reply to my initial email with the usual reasons why the forum is being closed they seem rather coy about how you are meant to interact on Facebook. As I have discovered, also the same experience as many on their forum, the only way you can interact is by replying to the advertising posts the Club make. There is no way of initiating a new discussion. Just seems they are trying to close down any avenue where members can hold the Club to account? I am sure some bright spark will initiate a group on Facebook "Camping and Caravan Club Chat" which they won't have any control over.

All seems a bit strange to me. As you know David there a quite a few CAMC unofficial FB groups (which some are quite entertaining), anyone can start up a private group on just about anything. Don't get why the C&CC are trying to achieve, free speech and all that. Is there something on the horizon perhaps?

They have pulled the plug on many parts of the business in the last few years:

Camping in the Forest

Glamping tents

Foreign touring

Winter Rallies

are the ones I recall.

This is the latest reply I got from the C&CC having questioned some of the things mentioned in their first reply.

"Good morning David,

Thank you for your email.

Regarding the forum requiring both the first and second names to access, this was just the format of the system and required this information in order for members to access and take part in use of the forum.

Unfortunately there is not a way for users to start their own conversations on our Facebook page, as it is not something that Facebook supports anymore. However, we do still actively encourage our members to interact with us and other campers, whether this be by director messager by posting comments or questions on the posts we publish. This will allow you to interact with the Club and other members.

There are also a number of other Facebook groups that are related to camping and other forums.

Kind Regards"

There is probably no point pursuing the issue anymore as clearly the C&CC have reached a decision which they are unwilling to go back on. It is clear that there are now no options, within the Club, for members to communicate between each other. Be interesting to see if any members get together to form their own Facebook Group, but as one does not seem to already exist I wonder what the likelihood is?

Hmm, that’s not the version they told us at the start of the forum. In our discussions at that time, it was made clear it was a conscious decision by C&CC to use real names.

I agree with you, David, that there’s no point in pursuing the issue. Head, brick wall.
