Living in a Caravan Vs Living in a house

Have decided to start a new thread so not to take over the what your doing discussion.

The question / discussion is the benefit of living in a caravan on a club site and moving every 21 days to living in a brick built solid home.

For me apart from the investment angle is -Holidays away in the van, if you lived in one then it's no longer a mobile holiday home.

What do others think.

Exactly my scenario, Metheven. My caravan is a touring caravan on a touring site and there's a tv licence at the house address. So I don't need a separate tv licence for the caravan, which is another cost saving compared to living in a house!

I think that answers your question, Goldie!

I do not have to pay for my tv licence, and our house was bought cash with  some of my redundancy money in 1994 for £27000 and it is  now  worth over £350,000,which we have willed to our children when we go,but what cash and investments we have is ours and we intend to spend as much as we can before we leave this world, and as for running costs it is below what it would cost to be living on sites all year, wink

Don't you have to have a TV licence on site if you don't have one at home, whether tenants or owners? I don't think sites provide free TV viewing.

It was Malcolm that specifically brought Freeview into the discussion, and Freeview is not an on site benefit, anyone can access it free with the correct apparatus.

Yes, you do need a licence, but we have just read Malcolm's take on why he does not need one.

Like JVB, we are really old and now get a free licence, so our Freeview is truly free, and legal!

We have seasonal pitches booked for a whole year from 16th March this year, so we will be living a lot cheaper than you, Kj!

Posted on 01/03/2018 12:32

I am not disputing that Malcolm, but you are advocating that we all sell our houses and move into our LVs to "get a life" and see the country, we are hardly going to be doing that if we are staying on only 2 seasonal pitches all the time!

If we want to see the country we would need to tour so you need to  compare the correct figures.  You really cannot be selective and only quote those figures that suit your arguement.

If we wanted to, we could afford both our house and the cost of touring all year on full facility sites, but as I, and several others have already said, we do not want to!

Even when you add in the extras like tv licence, sky package and high speed broadband and phone, our outgoings only come to about £12 a day. As with many on here the house is paid for and appreciating nicely, much better than any other reasonably safe investment. As with JVB we hope to leave its value to our sons. However, if we ever did run out of savings it is available for equity release. I doubt that is an option on a depreciating caravan.

When M adds on the cost of his towing vehicle and extra sites every 21 days, even with seasonal pitches I doubt he is much below this figure. Whilst we have a caravan and tow car, they are by no means essential.

Interesting post CY. I too have had a look at my spreadsheets. For clarity, if I add up last years Council Tax, Household Fuel costs, Water, Home Insurance, Broadband/ Phone, TV Licence, & household repairs etc then divide by 365 to get a daily comparable figure, it comes to £14 per day. Can't remember the last time we bought furniture or carpets etc. so little spend there.

Can't remember either, the last time we stayed on an open all year HS caravan site that was only that same £14...Perhaps add up to £10 minimum per night on average? So for me at least, and probably you, living in a caravan rather than a house would be a much more expensive option and not a route I would even consider.   innocentwink

To compare directly  Justus2, you should include only those costs that are included in a site fee, so that would be council tax, water and waste, and fuel costs.

Even on a Club seasonal pitch you have to pay for your own phone, broadband, insurance and repairs.

The BBC receive the licence fee but the licensing authority is a government department and I think we would all be surprised at their level of technology.

Don’t understand R2B why you would think I or anyone else would take pleasure in Malcolm getting into trouble, I thought the vast majority of posts were aimed at trying to stop him hurting himself and Mrs M.

Posted on 01/03/2018 12:50

Some(but not all) of my musings is based on the fact certain posters are almost stalking Malcom, when He’s not posting they kick start His ‘Future car/lifestyle/finances’ discussion to then demand His own thread to follow Him onto that & start over again. Schadenfreude?, oh yes it’s certainly in there from some☹️. Gladly Malc continues with dignity👍🏻

I think its true to say that this is an open forum so when Malcolm started telling folk about his personal lifestyle, finances/level of debt, Mrs M visa etc.etc. he did so in the full knowledge that those subjects would be discussed.  I think most of us on here are concerned with the amount of personal information he posts.

I also think the vast majority of posts have been delivered with dignity

I think MM is just a having game with us and enjoys it. I see nothing wrong in playing the game as long as nobody is hurt by it. That's how I see it cool

Maybe not:

You don’t need a separate TV Licence for, Quote:

Boats, touring caravans or vehicles as they’re already covered by your main home’s TV Licence. Unquote.

As said person lives in a 'Touring Caravan' and has to tour due to regulations, it all hinges on the wording of "main home" with said person.

Posted on 01/03/2018 13:49

Either way I would assume that the licence would need to be in his name but at a guess would say that's not the case.

I see no reason to be overly  concerned with the amount of personal information he posts.
