We need more basic facility sites

With the mention of the closure of High Onn and given that the club seem fully intent on pressing forward with the expansion to full facility sites by upgrading with serviced pitches, and different forms of self catering in glamping, yurts, pods and even airstream caravans etc it seems that those members who are on a more limited budget or even those who just prefer basics, are getting left behind. You might say we can use the cl system and that’s exactly what is happening. This is showing there is a demand by the number of fully booked cl’s. So why can’t the club come down to the more basic forms of caravanning and find and expand this type of site within the network. There are big gaps in the geographical area of the UK that could be opened up by developing this type of site. No doubt there would be an initial outlay but nowhere near the scale of that of a large scale flagship type site. The basic sites in the network now are priced at £17 (£18 from next year) and this comes in on a par with basic cl’s. There are thousands of members who would jump at the chance of this type of site being run under the club banner. The following counties are lacking in club sites, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, amongst others, would benefit from this type of site

This is how caravan sites started off please don’t allow them to die.

But it would be interesting to the percentage of members who book them purely to secure a hardstanding, if there was a pitch surface type option would they have just chosen a standard hardstanding, I have booked a H/S pitch just to make sure we didn’t end up on a grass pitch and didn’t even use the tap or drain !

A good question HD. Well on the last seven (different) sites where I've used SP all the rest were HS so that certainly wasn't a reason on those sites but well could be HD.

Also it will be academic soon as one will be able to book a pitch type, or transfer over to a HS as soon as the new booking system comes on line in a few weeks (Yes I know it probably won't but that's another thread)

...but not all of the membership want SPs on sites but the club still install them...

But at best it's 30% of pitches are SP on sites that have them, and while the club does install them there is no need at all to book one and pay the extra £5 unless you want to, but of course they do go quicker and are often fully used.

The provision of non-EHU pitches is even less! If you're lucky you might find 6 or so pitches and only about a fiver less than standard!

From my post earlier on there are 19 sites with non EHU, some sites are I believe all non EHU?

But yes hopefully metering will take place soon, but I think a few years down the line?

I read with interest the posters regarding non EHU pitches. Given that all Caravans and motorhomes need some sort of power. What is the saving in cost from not being on an EHU compared to the extra gas usage. Especially given the recent shortages in the supply of Calor gas. Also, when we had the recent heatwave the gas required to keep a fridge going must have been significant.

It’s a good question KB, but there’s unlikely to be a definitive answer, given just how variable outfits can be, what kind of alternative power source/set up owners might invest in, how much time you spend in your outfit, what appliances you use, what time of year you tour.

We have a small MH, nothing fancy added to it except that it came with a solar panel already fitted when we bought it. Our fridge is quite small, and we don’t take long showers. We have a gas cooker and oven, use gas kettle, don’t take a TV, and I can easily survive without a hair dryer. We charge our phones and iPads up on the road. So we could very easily do a week or more, even with small gas cylinders like ours, without a hook up. We have done this regularly, but we have a historical touring background that stretches to a time before onboard fridges, fancy plumbing systems, and are happy basic camping like this in the Summer months. Winter is something different, then we do prefer a hook up, but we still don’t need a facility block. Others with larger, super equipped outfits, large fridge freezer, microwave, computerised this and that, they probably need more in the way of gas and things like inverters for the solar panel. But lots of folk invest in this, and want cheaper pitches.🙂

I think 30% is being generous its less than 15% in Devon and Cornwall being so few it's no surprise most are booked.

You are not the first to have done so, a number of people have said as much on CT over the years.

Until we are given a choice we will not know for sure how many do it.

So that seems to indicate more SPs are needed. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The Membership will have the opportunity to choose HS or Grass shortly, once the new deposit scheme comes into play. As I understand it, there’s to be £1 difference between a HS and grass, with grass being the cheaper. Whether it’s to be a £1 discount, or £1 extra, I am not sure🤷‍♀️
