We need more basic facility sites

With the mention of the closure of High Onn and given that the club seem fully intent on pressing forward with the expansion to full facility sites by upgrading with serviced pitches, and different forms of self catering in glamping, yurts, pods and even airstream caravans etc it seems that those members who are on a more limited budget or even those who just prefer basics, are getting left behind. You might say we can use the cl system and that’s exactly what is happening. This is showing there is a demand by the number of fully booked cl’s. So why can’t the club come down to the more basic forms of caravanning and find and expand this type of site within the network. There are big gaps in the geographical area of the UK that could be opened up by developing this type of site. No doubt there would be an initial outlay but nowhere near the scale of that of a large scale flagship type site. The basic sites in the network now are priced at £17 (£18 from next year) and this comes in on a par with basic cl’s. There are thousands of members who would jump at the chance of this type of site being run under the club banner. The following counties are lacking in club sites, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, amongst others, would benefit from this type of site

This is how caravan sites started off please don’t allow them to die.

A simple question (may have already been answered, I haven't read through the 14 pages of posts!) -

Why is it so vital that "The Club" provide these facilities from new given the huge number of basic CLs which already exist (not to mention the "better/cheaper" commercial sites so often mentioned)?

And as a follow up, given the cost of acquiring and developing the land for such new "basic" sites, has anyone suggested an idea of when they might start paying for themselves to recoup that cost. 

(No axe to grind here,  a non member and non van owner - as has been pointed out many times wink - just a genuine request for information.)

A basic site with what it seems now are getting busier would take far less time to recoup the costs than the millions being spent to buy and refurbish each of the recently acquired sites

But if a large number of members start using CL’s then isn’t the Club going to loose out on booking (money) ? Ok the club will get their annual subscription but that’s all

In relation to basic non facility sites, if it is in the right place we would use it, indeed we will be using one shortly.  However, I can understand the club not wanting to subsidise them if they are not paying there way. Unlike a supermarket which might sell a product at a loss to keep folk coming in and not switching to the opposition, the club realise they are unlikely to loose membership as a result, because it is required to access the CL network.

Good point, but in the scheme of things the amount will be relatively small and of course if they are running them at a loss……..

The Club doesn’t have to buy land and build from new though M to pay lip service to budget touring.

It spent millions on Cayton Bay, which isn’t very far from its other Scarborough Site. Yet it didn’t see fit to consider putting in a single eco pitch either in the further millions spent to Club-clone Cayton, or to consider any at West Ayton. All that money spent but not enough to fund a couple of strips of tarmac to help those less well off on a budget. But a survey tells them they need to put signs on a door so folks know what’s in there🤷‍♀️ I do wonder at some of the thinking at times at HQ🤔

As for recouping costs, I have lost count of the number of years since the Club bought land in Bristol. (Millions spent no doubt) And still hasn’t achieved planning permission, let alone any sign of an income return on this investment.

Possibly, but that's just speculation isn't it, assuming these sites would be well used. I was really hoping for something more definite. And, although CLs are, apparently, being fully used, is that because more of them are providing "facilities"?

Again, just posing the question.

I will admit the week before on that site is somewhat more expensive. I take it the week before is half term in Scotland. I was just pointing out that in my opinion some cl owners are getting somewhat greedy. My limit has gone up to £20 but with the new increases in energy cost might have to go up to more. Also I do agree with you and find it concerning that people think sites at over £30 are value for money.

Thank you it's nice to know others think £30+ is no longer VFM.

Yes £20 is my current limit but it has to have facilities or be in great location.

First 2 weeks of October are usually the half term in these parts of Scotland, it might drift into wek 3 in some other parts. Here in Perth and Kinross they get 2 weeks, not sure about other areas.

It has been pointed out on here before that more and more CLs are going upmarket, HS, EHU (with or with metering) facilities...why is this?

Just been reading an article about a pub (I know, it's not a caravan site) that has closed its doors due to the cost of energy. 

Apparently their current contract has just expired! They had been paying around £13K a year but the cheapest contract they were offered going forward was £72K! No cap on commercial energy prices!

If this type of price increase is inflicted on sites I can see the prices skyrocketing and more and more people going the non-EHU route.
