Steamer Quay refurb removal of non EHU pitches

Just had my copy of the December magazine and noticed that the economy pitches are to be removed at Steamer Quay as part of the refurbishment.  As I understand it, these are the non-EHU pitches.  Isnt this somewhat short sighted in the current climate?  Surely more will be using off grid as a way of saving money?  We certainly will be next year.  Maybe there is some special issue at this site?  I havnt stayed there, just noticed it in the magazine.

Steamer Quay would be the idea site to try metered electricity because there is currently no EHU infrastructure. As they are starting from new the addition of metering would probably be of minimal extra cost compared to converting and existing site. Steamer Quay also has the advantage of having relatively few pitches which would further reduce costs but provide useful information on how the Club proceed or otherwise with metering on other Club sites. All that metering will do is remove the cost from the Club to the user, so overall the average Club member is unlikely to notice much difference but those that are happy to rely on their own power generation might benefit from a modest cost saving. There is also the assumption that electricity prices will continue to remain high which I think is wrong. Whilst we don't yet generate all of our electricity from renewable sources that element in years to come will increase and should lower costs which will add another question about whether metering has any cost benefits to Club/Members?

Perhaps the club have their eye on a slightly longer term solution...?

You are talking about cut down sites aimed at motorhomers who are happy to use such places Steve. However in 40 years of continental travel I have yet to set foot on a site without the absolute minimum of showers, toilets and waste disposal and as a caravanner didnt know anything less than that existed.

We like non facility sites even with the caravan, we use them at home and abroad.

The ones Steve mentioned are as he said former Municipal sites, facilities open in the High season and can be used by tents and caravans at that time, MHs only for the rest of the year.

Why they don't allow caravans  all year I don't know as there is Freshwater, a waste dump and a toilet dump, no reason not to let caravans in they are happy to use such sites.

We find them nice relaxing places.

45 years since we first took a caravan abroad, back then the facilities provided were often very basic in some places.  Same in UK too if I remember correctly.

Provision these days is much better, though in some very rural areas of Norway they can still leave a bit to be desired!    In UK, the facilities on some CLs  can also be less than ideal.

However, wherever we are, we actually prefer to use our own on board facilities, so prefer to use non facility sites/CLs where available, rather  than pay for facilities we will not use.

The aires networks in France, and I think most of Europe, cannot be approved to allow caravans to use the sites unless there are facilities, they are open and generally serviced daily.  Frankly I like it that way as generally MH's are more self contained.

Why would they think we caravanners need more facilities?

Yes, if there is no water and grey/black waste provision, but otherwise, we personally have as good as, if not better than, on board provision as any MH.

I believe there are some stellplatz in Germany that also allow caravans,  but did not try  any, and now we possibly will not take the van abroad again.

Would like to take van to Norway in 2024 for my younger sister's 80th, but  a very long way to go, will need to see what shape we are in by then!

Brexit has made all that more difficult.   ☹️
