Smart Metering Trial

Exciting News! At Wyatts Covert Club Campsite we’re trialling Smart Metering, which means you will only pay for the amount of electricity you use during your stay.

The price quoted for bookings at this campsite excludes electricity (with campsite fees reduced accordingly) and we will only charge you for the precise amount of electricity you use during your stay.

This is something many members have been asking for and we’re really pleased to be able to trial it this year! Find out more at https://www.caravanclub.co.uk/smartmetering/

Whilst I would agree the Club should be up front about how much they will charge per Kwh, inevitably the price will be higher than we get charged for our domestic prices because they are currently subsidised. That does not apply to commercial organisations as I understand it. I am pretty certain the club will hunt out the best deals they can but as I say it's likely to be more that domestic rates regardless of how good the deal is?

According to Love Energy Savings internal data the average unit price for business electricity was 49.88 pence per kWh in March 2023.

Average price. So that means it could be more or less then.

We're a business customer, and have just started a contract with a new supplier. While it's true the price of kWh has risen, the real shocker is the increased daily standing charge.

And, bye the bye, when the new company realised we were a farm they raised the price. Farms, apparantley are a risk. Presumably at risk of not paying!

But surly, as a commercial organisation buying in bulk, they should be able to negotiate a substantial discount which domestic customers are unable to do.

If DD's figures apply to the Club I make that about 50% more than I am paying at home so it would seem that around 50p per Kwh will be charged? I don't know how useful it is to compare average home consumption with that of a caravan or motorhome but it seems in April I used and average of 8/9 Kwh's per day and that doesn't include heating at home. If that sort of consumption was mirrored on a campsite we are looking at costs of £4/5 a night with the use of electric heating. The true test won't be established until any of us use a Club site with a metered supply, something for us all to look forward towink

Hi everyone,

The kWh charge to our members and guests will reflect the same costs that the Club is paying, with no additional charges other than VAT at 5%. The Club, as an organisation, does not benefit from any domestic energy pricing cap protections, and as such needs to secure its energy based on business rates. In general terms, these prices are agreed and contracted for periods of 6 months covering 1st April to 30th September and 1st October to 31st March.

Therefore, between 17th May 2023 & 30th September 2023 the kWh charge will be 42p and between 1st October 2023 & 31st March 2024 will be 44.1p (including VAT at 5%).

The £1 reduction in site fee for July is  therefore totally unrealistic. It is only just about going to pay for the fridge and charger. Most folk would heat some water and boil the odd kettle. The £2 for August is perhaps more realistic.

Thanks to Rowena for clarifying what the price will be, at least we know where we are now. Perhaps not as bad as we had imagined? It won't be long before we have some members reporting what their real world experience was.

It is not even going to do that Steve, especially if you have one of the larger fridge freezers.     Ours is not as big as some that are around these days, but, as we have a meter in the van, we know it uses almost 4kWh per 24 hours.  Even a £2 reduction is stingy!

Having used metered sites extensively abroad, we also know that unless we heat no water at all in the van (or use only gas to do so) adding in lights, kettle, toaster and water for 1 shower every second day will use an average of 6kWh per 24 hours.

Anyone who wants to use their own facilities on this site will be seriously disadvantaged financially.

It's likely, as previously suggested, that there will be increased usage of onsite facilities to mitigate the meter payments which will unfortunately push up running costs further. Reading through Wyatts Covert reviews a variety of people use this site, some are work based and I would imagine they won't want to pay extra if it can be avoided?

I agree with DK on his estimates but I think domestic fuel costs are predicted to lower by mid season.

Quick edit

I had forgotten it's optional I think? So will people take this up if there isn't a good incentive?
