Pitch Prices

I was thinking we might like to go to Oban, or nearby (we've been before), as there's a good off-road cycle track, which you can extend by catching the Corran Ferry and a quiet road on the other side.  There are two Club sites in the area, one at Onich and another at Barcaldine which are suitable.  I compared prices for 2 adults, 5 nights from 16th April, hardstanding with ehu: C&MHC Bunree £191; C&CC (with age concession) £107.

I wonder which one I should choose?

Please correct me if I am wrong but in October 2020 did we not have the advantage of the reduction in VAT which would have made the price better value than normal? That was also before we have seen a massive increase in energy costs.

There are lots of alternatives for touring nowadays. Yes much has become more expensive, for a variety of reason, but there are more options now, particularly if like the OP you have a MH or camper van.

The trick is to decide what you need and want from each particular site option you choose, and decide if that represents value for money to you.

From a Club Site point of view, we enjoyed using CS for years, but they are rarely best vfm to us anymore, for a variety of reasons, so we go elsewhere. Those who use primarily Club Sites might be a bit shocked at some of the price rises, but will just have to go with it if they still provide what is wanted and needed. A little bit of compromise can be a good thing👍

Good point - we stayed in a cottage in Coniston in October 2020 and the equivalent price this year shows a whopping 70% increase. Although club site prices are no longer of interest to us, I'm still often surprised that folk (a) make irrelevant comparisons and (b) focus so much on price when other factors are surely more important in choosing a holiday destination. undecided

We're off to a site soon which is already over £6 pn same time next year, difficult to see what's happening with prices except that they are on the up. The C&CC does indeed offer some good discounts and not just for over 60s (in fact they're offering discounts on the discounts just now) but they use the discounts to fill up pitches outwith popular holiday times.  "Easter" holidays in Scotland are always in the first two weeks of April so the pricing areas can move a bit as Easter itself is sometimes after the two week holiday....take out a calculator to work all that out....wink

Re the VAT reduction, my confirmation email stated: “Please note that the VAT reduction is not reflected in this confirmation and will be applied upon arrival at the site, when paying for your stay.”  That was the basis of my calculation, ie pre-vat reduction.  A year earlier at the same site I paid virtually the same amount per night for two of us.

re focussing on price vs other factors, I thought I’d already explained that. I still think, for my priorities the Club is over charging and I’ll be going elsewhere, as long as we can get a shower

Oooh, GJ, that’s brave of you to use a group name which has resulted in many a Deleted User post in the past. 😱

I think there is a real difference, with those that have the means to have a caravan/MH in the first place, then have the means to tax (either the larger towcar or MH), insurance costs, service costs, perhaps storage fees, and then of course money for fuel to go away, with being able to afford and preferring to spend their money elsewhere to get better value for money or stay longer elsewhere on a cheaper site. Totally different in my view.

And that's great, each person will pay what for what they want and I fully support that but I'm not sure why those that do want to use club sites need labelling in any way?

Of it was me it would be North Ledaig everytime over either of the other 2 mentioned in the OP.

We have used Bunree many years ago but I have no wish to return there.

C&C site we have not stayed at yet but will probably at some point but not in midge season.

Brue, I've taken note of your suggestions, thank you.

Good answer Tammy,  I won’t join the argument about this Cub’s prices versus that  Club’s prices. If I had a self contained motorhome I would be over to Fidden Farm on Mull. No bookings, no one turned away. I like that attitude. It appeals.
