Loss of Site Shops on remote rural sites

Both last year and this ,several  sites that boasted well used site shops have closed them,  they now only sell Toilet fluid !   Even that essential  6kg Calor Gas is no longer sold !   (That is VERY inconvenient and 'unfriendly').  If the Sites were in the outskirts of large towns or even Villages that would be acceptable and reasonable, giving trade to local suppliers, but Borrowdale in Cumbria and New England Bay in Dumfies and Galloway ,both many miles from shops selling milk ,newspapers or even Ice Creams , let alone exchanging 6kg  Calor Gas cylinders. Makes life very difficult for the Member on Holiday,  Both Sites previously had shops , Borrowdale especially sold lovely fresh Cakes from Brysons in Keswick. And Red Squirrel food to feed the 'locals'.

If the Site Managers find supplying Gas and other essentials to Members  too much  trouble ? Perhaps they might consider whether they are in the job that suits them, and their Customers  Best?

It's certainly made me Wonder if the Club is still 'right' for me ?  After 20 years being happy with it ?

Most MHs either carry 2 bottles or have a gas tank so I can’t see it affects them any more than caravanners. It’s all down to organising yourself really.

Agreed, a tad of forward thinking and organisation helps a great deal regardless of being a motorised caravan or otherwise. Can’t see the club wishing to take on the responsibility of site shops in these times of cutbacks and burdening bureaucracy, red tape and regulations.

You can get Green toilet fluid and odd  things like steel tent pegs,  but not always gas  ? For some obscure reason ?   It's very  'hit and miss'  depending on the site Warden.  From now on ,one of the questions I will ask, when I ring to book a site which is in a rural area  will be :  you had a shop last year,  Do you still have a shop ? Do you sell milk  or 6kg Propane ?   If not, I will look elsewhere.    I don't like having to pack up to go offside for shopping  too often, my problem as I chose a motorhome,   but it never used to be a problem, until the past couple of years.

Wardens seem to be grumpier too ?  Or is that just my imagination ? 🤔    lol 😆

The world has changed since the pandemic!people are more grumpy because it seems that the "big I am more important than you" person type is more prevelant! You will see this on the road,on site,in towns and around shops.I am so fed up with this attitude now that I no longer (after 50 years of caravanning)want to be involved.

Some club sites have shops, some don't, some have large shops, sone have smaller ones, if having a shop is that important to your stay then ring up before booking or travelling.

For myself I've always viewed them as a slight perk, if they are there I'll use them for things like local maps, ice creams, sweets, local farm foods are usually good. In 25 years I think I can count on the fingers of one hand the time we've used them if we run out of something like milk.

We don't count on a site having one and stock up elsewhere. As posted caravan/MH fluids will always be sold and gas should be too dependent on stock

Spend three nights at New England Bay earlier this month. I bought ice cream from reception. They had a very small shop selling a few things, can’t remember what. Milk maybe? Possibly pasta. Can’t comment on gas because we have refillable cylinders. It was good to have ice cream because it was the Galloway local ice cream, wouldn’t have bought it otherwise. There are shops in villages just a few miles to the north and south of the site, we know because we used one at Sandhead. We don’t go to sites expecting a shop.

That's Good, an improvement on last year anyway. When they had nothing only a few  things like toilet fluid...green only. I wonder if they stock 6kg Calor propane now ?  If I go this year I'll have to phone and ask.

I agree that a bit of forward planning should ensure you have a gas cylinder to use and a spare and with fridges and microwaves food should not be a problem.

I can’t see the point of having a food shop at Broadway when there is a garage that supplies everything over the road. Surely we should be supporting the local economy, not taking trade away?

I would far rather see wardens out and about on the site than sat in the office in the expectation someone might want a tin of beans or a pint of milk.

I think that would be the club’s stance afterall, thats what they pay the staff's wages for, not running a shop I believe!

If you read my original post you would see that I said  'on Rural sites where the nearest shops are several (more than 5) miles away,'   and added  we should buy 'locally' if shops are available. A good example is Exmoor house,  with a nice Co-op and plenty of Artisan shops and restaurants all within walking distance of the site.  Borrowdale however  had a terrific shop until this year. Sorely missed  by members onsite  (us)  and hillwalkers coming off of Catbells  looking for an ice ream.    Just another change that I feel diminishes the Club and its welcome.

From our experience last year and the one site we used earlier in the year I thought an increasing number of sites were getting back to where they were before Covid. I think the Club provide certain items for sale which probably come from their tie up with Prima Leisure so that is why you see toilet chemicals. Gas, I suspect, is down to whether a site can find a wholesaler willing to deliver to remote campsites. Other than the things mentioned the site staff have to finance the purchase of stock and of course they will be paying top wholesale prices because of the limited amount they buy and stock. I am not sure its up to the site staff to provide a service which only breaks even if they are lucky. I always found it useful, especially the more remote sites, that they sold milk. However not much incentive if people are upset at paying more money than they would in their local Aldi when the site is probably buying at what Aldi sell it for? I am sure there is a willingness to have site shops but only if they give a reasonable return and don't take up a disproportionate amount of time to organise?

David,  I think some 'Covid'  measures are still being applied, for instance here at Chapel Lane,  Shower curtains still haven't re-appeared although the rails and hooks still hang forlornly  waiting for the curtains to return,  Saving clothes from getting wet in the cubicles which are smaller and NEED  a curtain.

A bit 'off track' from the original thread, but you did mention 'covid' related items.

Whilst on the subject of Chapel Lane site,  noticed multiple  'Traveller families'  and their vans onsite, taking over the Laundry Facilities  and breaking numerous site rules ,  hanging washing on fences and railings, gas bottles  standing outside vans,  Caravans  and  motorhomes  parked close together on pitches unused.   Just a bit unnerving,  but not bothering us personally.

Ray, you sound dissatisfied.

So drive 20 minutes from Chapel Lane.to Somerswood Caravan site at Meriden. Ask Angela or Marc, the owners, to let you look round.

See if you like it better.
