Is EHU metering a good investment?

I was going to post this in the thread that has been Deleted User as a number of folk were saying that EHU Metering would make pitch prices cheaper, so Let's play the You Said, We Listened and Implemented game. This is my view based on my experience as an IT Infrastructure Project Manager and in IT Procurement.  To satisfy the We don't want EHU and want cheaper pitch prices group of people, the We only want to pay for the electricity we use group of people and the I'll pay whatever as I'm on holiday group of people, the clubs only option is to move to metered usage. How does the club do that and what investment would be needed. Lets estimate that the club has over 10,000 pitches with an average of 2 hookups per bollard that's 5,000 bollards that will need to be modified and/or replaced and some of those will need groundwork undertaken for new cabling etc, it will require  putting all pitches out of action and subsequent loss of income whilst the work takes place. This can't all be done at once and I think that a 5 year rollout period would be a stretch and it would take a dedicated team at HQ to manage. They would need to procure equipment, electrical installation teams, groundwork teams, IT systems and software to operate the metering and payments, negotiate contracts with all the power companies who supply the club sites and negotiate with any land owners. I don't think you would get much change from a £5 million investment of the clubs (our) money. Issues that the club would need to consider 1) leased sites where the land owner doesn't give permission for the work to be carried out or the lease will soon come to an end 2) the price per kW from each of the power suppliers will vary depending on contract length and renewal dates, so do they average that price out across all sites or do you have different EHU costs in different areas of the network 3) do you factor the suppliers standing charge into the  metered cost,  4) the club would need to move to a credit card only payment system where the payment for EUH used is automatically deducted at the end of your stay 5) a central dispute resolution team, as there will always be people who will challenge the bill and that shouldn't be the on site teams and finally the biggest question for the club, 6) what return on investment will the club get. I doubt very much that the savings made from the electricity used would come close to the investment needed therefore the remaining investment would need to come from reserves and most likely recouped from increased pitch prices. Lastly this would give the club a very inconsistent offering with not all sites offering metered EUH, the cost of EHU could vary from site to site and an even bigger price variance across the network. Not a very good Business Case in my view, in terms of both investment and inconvenience to the membership so I can't see it happening I'm afraid.

I’m not blaming them, just pointing out that they, regardless of how many, are subsidised by us moderate users. The blame is on the system that allows these selfish few to continue in this vane. They certainly don’t set a good example to the rest of us In these difficult times and they are milking the system which allows them to do so. Surely because they can is not an excuse to do so in these challenging times, is it?

Those who are of the "I have paid so I will use it for my convenience"  are the same who have no thought for others when leaving a mess when using any of the facilities,,   or cannot be bothered to separate their rubbish before filling the first bin?with it all,  or not breaking down large cardboard boxes ,

It not just CT users saying this but folk on other forums too. Thing is it really isn’t, as you suggest, just electric prices driving the price hikes across our budgets, it’s the wider world wide energy crisis. Oh, sorry to mention this but Brexit too amongst other things!😱

Where did you get that from my post? I said.

”Energy in general has increased in price, as have wages, consumables and bought in services. Although electricity is a large element, it is by no means the only reason for escalating prices.”

Probably posted before the Working Time Directive and Elf and Safety plus the growth of Litigation, has made for large increases' in this club and other organisations overheads and now staff cannot do many of the jobs once looked on as "part of my job"

As can be seen in the growth of outsourcing companies who's staff have qualifications to carry out such work now

John

We have been to  many all inclusive hotels and a couple of cruises but have to say gluttony and waste were not very evident neither was inebriation when the drink was free. Dont deny it happened but not obvious  .

However what has revolted me has been people stealing  restaurant food to feed feral cats and dogs  in a poor country where the population have a hard life.

In all honesty left over food you have paid for are called Doggy bags👍🏻

It’s interesting how this thread has progressed and deviated.
Returning to the OP again I note it’s about the merits, or not, of metering and poses the question if such an introduction could make pitches cheaper. In order to answer this I feel we must firstly ask what is it that is driving this consideration and why now. These two questions have driven my contributions. Regarding making pitches cheaper I’m not sure metering would making things cheaper initially, may be in the long run, but it would ensure everyone pays their way according to their own use. Not a bad thing in my view taking responsibility for own actions.

Now I’ve been around long enough to remember holidaying with my parents at both holiday camps and cottages in the 60s. I remember having to feed the electric meter using tokens bought at the reception or coins from the holiday purse.  Oh, and similar on showers on caravan and camping sites.Times were different then and as energy and cost of living fell for many of us these means of energy payment were mostly confined to history.
Today, things are very different, even to a year ago, and maybe a return to similar methods of energy purchase and an attempt to reduce wastage, should be considered.

Finally have the refurbishments like at Clumber incorporated heat pumps or solar panels? Every bit, including our thoughtful and measured usage, could help, couldn’t it? The World is changing and attitudes and practices with it!

Heat pumps/solar panels should be a standard upgrade if CAMC are serious about consumption. A ban on awning heaters at all times seems an obvious energy saver. I will now await the howls of protest.

Heat pumps?, the jury is out on that one-plus it’s very costly initially🤷🏻‍♂️
