Vacation V Staycation Costs

We sadly accepted a while back that our hoped for trip abroad, in May/June, would not be happening and have booked on a two week rally in June-which we are very much looking forward to.

Over the last couple of days I have been looking at options for July/August and wondered how prices compare.

Normally we would go abroad at the times I mention so never look to see how over there compares with here.

Anyway, just looked at the price for a 10 day stay at sites of similar levels of quality and facilities, one in Cornwall and one in the Vendee.

The price for Cornwall, at Pentewan Sands, is £498.10.

The price for France at La Yole via the club and including a BF overnight crossing with cabin is £488.36

We don't go 'over there' to save money but its another example to show that considering 'going' as opposed to 'staying' need not cost a lot more.

The Lord only knows what currents abound off Lands End. I spent two and a half hours throwing up in the bowels of the Scillonian one happy holiday. It looked calm as a millpond as well, and much to my horror, I was the only one affected that day. I could barely stagger off at St Mary’s, but my first port of call was the helicopter booking office for the return journey. Happily waved off my parents and sister later in day, then flew over them out on top deck an hour or so later. Scillies are stunning, and we intend having a holiday there at some point, but nothing on this Earth would get me back on that ruddy boat!🤢😱😁

Hi TDA, and when you did your ‘cost comparison’ did you feel the additional monies were well spent?!!

Flew to St Mary’s regularly for 4 years for work but prior to that did a surprise trip for Jean, she had never been, and flew to Tresco to stay at the Hell Bay hotel.

We arrived on a Thursday and awoke the next day to news of the volcano eruption in Iceland and with all flights banned the knock on effect meant we had to come back on the Scillonian but, thankfully, it was  sunny and calm.

My start of my work on the Scillies coincided with the end of the helicopter service so only flew once for work and next flight was cancelled at short notice so it was onto the planes.

Newquay is better for me so only flew from Lands End once.
Those who have done so will know that they may weigh you, as they need to ‘balance’ the aircraft, and one lady took exception to her, it must be said not minuscule weight, being read out rather loudly.

It was Mum and Dad’s first holiday down in Cornwall, so as we had a cottage in Penzance, weather was gorgeous, so we decided to go over to Scillies using the heavily discounted vouchers given at the time in The Cornishman. (I still occasionally read it online👍) So we all had tickets at £16 each to sail there and back. Absolute bargain to enjoy something different, relaxing for Mum and Dad, who were in late 70’s at the time, still able to walk a long way, so I knew we could take a good look around. Mill pond calm. I started turning green almost past Mousehole, it was a nightmare after that. Mum, Dad and Sister fine. So for me £8 to get there, £80 to fly back. Great value for the day, no idea how much it is now, but I would fly next time. It’s a very special place, want to go back and island hop, spend some time researching history, walking, discovering. We did get to have a lovely swim though, warm waters, crystal clear. Interesting being on St Mary after ship had gone, back to quiet tranquillity. Just shows the impact visitors can have in Summer, even the day trippers. Tresco Gardens on my list👍😁

From a cruise we had an excursion to Santiago de Campostela and whilst in the Cathedral did the British thing and joined a queue without knowing what it was for. Eventually we found ourselves in the presence of a monk and a statue of St James. A bit embarrassed as non catholics we put a euro on the plate, stroked the statue and made a wish. OH wished for a smooth Biscay crossing and we got one. Next day it was so rough it made the evening news

I doubt I would feel good on that crossing ever☹️ I have done Greek island hopping, and lots of times on CalMac Ferries without any problems, but it was bad, made me very wary of any type of sea crossing. But I get ill in certain cars (Citroen’s 🤢), coaches, buses. Ended up in hospital with severe travel sickness a couple of years ago in our own MH🤷‍♀️, so it’s a lottery with me. Fine on trains so long as I can face forwards. Cycling seems ok so far🤔😁

careful what you wish for, when we stayed on Bryher we only booked bed and breakfast with the intention of island hoping and perhaps eating on a different island, however, the last ferry back to Bryher was 1800 hrs so we quickly had to change to BB&evening meal, however, there was so much food OH had to revert to asking for childrens portions.

We stayed at the Hell Bay hotel, and we still have hanging on a bedroom wall a painting of Hells Bay done by a local guy whilst we were there , think i will put on our list of places to re-visit, does it count as staycation or vacation?, either way I am sure we would totally enjoy it. laughing
