We are going to spend the whole of September on a site in Devon, indoor pool, sauna, jaccuzzi, £995, maybe £200 for diesel, job done.

Personally i think BF to Santander/Bilbao is very expensive for  couple of years we have done Portsmouth Caen and made the journey thru France part of the holiday, last October we had to change the sailings to Portsmouth Santander as there were strikes in France and no diesel. We only live 20 minutes from Portsmouth port so more convenient for us to use BF

There are better bargains elsewhere

It’s not really better if you want to end up in Bilbao, or as in our case St Malo.🤔

32 hours on a ship to Bilbao or 12 hours driving time across France from Dieppe.

Some of you are rich.  There are better bargains elsewhere for everyone else.

Two adults with a motorhome for £181 return Newhaven -Dieppe in September. And with 20% off for anyone over 60 that brings it down to £145 return.

It might be even cheaper in the winter.

Well I suppose we could go one further and sail to Calais on the cheapest crossing of all and  simply drive the 1200km to Bilbao!

Actually, we did that in reverse one year when Brittany ferries went on strike while we were away with no prospect of an early resolution. I received a text from BF saying casually 'please make your way to Calais'! We did get a refund, though, plus a gratis Calais-Dover crossing.

My point was, it’s not really better or a bargain, if it’s not what you want to do. As with many things discussed on CT, it’s an individual choice.

Personally i think BF to Santander/Bilbao is very expensive

It possibly depends on outfit and where you live in the UK. The larger outfit you have the more expensive it is on the ferries. For me the Portsmouth - Bilbao route is extortionate and inconvenient even though I live equi distant from Portsmouth and Folkstone. There is no extra costs for size of outfit on Eurotunnel although for a car and caravan the costs are more than a motorhome.

I have just worked out the difference for me to get to Alicante:

via Portsmouth-Bilbao:

return fare £1733 plus fuel for the return trip Bilbao to Alicante of £327. Total £2060

via Eurotunnel:

return fare £270 during socialable hours plus fuel for the return trip £736. Total £1006

The saving, for me and someone who does not mind  driving down from Calais, is over £1000! I have ignored the small costs of night stops and I avoid the expensive tolls except where absolutely necessary. The journey is as Rufs says, part of the holiday and overnight halts can be interesting.
