Why does it have to be so difficult to book.....

We are almost finished planning and booking a couple of trips this year and are using more CLs due to costs.

Some CLs have been really easy to book, we sent an e mail, they replied promptly, we  confirmed....job done.

But  a few seem  to want to make booking more difficult or complicated.

One gave an e mail for contact, and had a website, but insisted that we ring them to book, and wanted a 50% deposit, which was not mentioned at all in their details.

Another also gave an e mail for contact, but no website link.  They replied after a short delay saying  they had availability, but that to book we must either phone, when no deposit would be required, or book via their website, which would ask for a deposit.

By the time they replied, we had found their website, but the booking system was not easy to understand so we had decided to wait for the reply to our e mail.

On another, the details on here said they had hardstandings, but turns out they do not, and we also noticed one which appeared to have all sorts of facilities but turned out to be a very basic site!

We are still waiting for one to reply to our e mail.

It is all rather frustrating!   frown

I think we've been fairly lucky this year in that all but one of the CLs we've contacted so far have got back to us pretty promptly. I'm not the most patient of persons as Mrs M will testify - if I don't hear within a couple of days I will move on. But if I really wanted to go I might have another go later in the year. smile

I suppose given that we have used CL for 30 years or so, and those we have used have been predominantly farms, I tend to be very laid back in terms of booking them. Phoning remains our prefered option, mainly because I can get answers to my questions. It’s very rare we don’t manage to make contact, but I’m usually willing to wait a couple of days, unless touring on the hoof!😁

Well I'm pleased to say (as I said elsewhere) that I finally got through to the CL. But generally it's off putting if you can't make contact, our holidays are limited and we have to plan things at the moment, this particular booking was along a route we needed to sort out in advance.

I have to agreed it is difficult to use CL's and CS's.

This year we would like to do a tour of the north east and I have been tempted to try doing so using mainly CL’s and CS’s.

We love the free and easy use of aires etc. “over there” as we don’t have to plan ahead.  We just turn up and if there is space then we stay, if not we try the next one.  Looking at most CL and CS listings they seem to want prior booking, deposits sometimes wanting cheques, and frankly making it difficult to be spontaneous.

We have used CL’s and CS’s in the past and will probably do so again but it seems that the business model does not fit the motorhoming style we, and many others, like.  So CL owners, how can we get around this?

I can recommend Low Hedgeley Farm at Powburn, it used to be a CL but has gone private. There are around 10 pitches so it still feels small and friendly. The owner Harry is one of the nicest men you'll ever meet and the site is immaculate. It has a toilet, ehu, serviced hardstanding and grass pitches. Easy access to the Cheviots for walks and near Alnwick for shops etc. The coast isn't too far away either. It's one of our faves and only an hour away from us in Jarrow. Only £16 per night and you just pay Harry at some point during your stay. Its good value and a great base to explore further afield. They have a website which is a good one with photos etc.
