Increase size of CLs?

Why Are CLs only allowed 5 vans, is it the government, local councils? If so perhaps the Club could lobby for an increase.

Isn't it time CLs were given permission to have more than 5 vans, many do anyway unofficially!

Perhaps it could be allowed to double to 10 vans, but only if they had a certain acreage?

I wouldn't like to see them over stuffed with vans but it would help both caraanners have more choice and scope and perhaps make it more financialily viable for owners.

I am always intrigued to read about the massive expense it is to put in Hard Standings, Electric and Water.  With a little bit of thought you put your underground electric and water pipes spaced out in the area at the bottom of the Hard Standings, fill with rubble that a local builder or skip hire company want to get rid of, sometimes delivering free, and blind off with clean 20mm gravel  for maybe £300 / £500  and the expense of hiring a JCB for a day or so, and you might even be able to sell the clean top soil to an avid gardener.  You then need an electrician to couple wires and certify. Water connections are easily done by any handyman with Alkathene piping.  Not really too difficult if you don't make it too fancy.

Somebody somewhere a long time ago must have come up with a figure of 5 caravans but was it purely an arbitrary number plucked from the air? Personally I think the number allowed should be based on the usable size of the CL. I've been to some where 5 seems very crowded and others where many more outfits could be pitched and stil have many times more space per outfit than one gets at a CC site.

In the last couple of weeks we have stayed on two different CLs in Cornwall , one was 0.75 acre and the other 1.0 acre. Both could easily accommodate more and in both cases had power supplies for more outfits.

I don't advocate an unlimited number but I'm sure increasing it from 5 to 6 outfits, but only where space allows, would be helpful to both the CL owner in terms of revenue and to us caravanners /  motorhomers by giving increased pitch availability.

It would still require a change to legislation though. People are reluctant to rock the boat lest we lose what we already have.

Why can't we just leave things as they are????

Is it too much to ask that members abide by the rules that they agreed to by joining the CC???

Well said Brian. I for one am also happy to leave things as they are as it seems to work well.

As a CL owner there are perhaps some hidden costs which I know won't apply to everyone, especially farms, but certainly affect a site like ours, house insurance costs have tripled as you no longer qualify for residential rates and I have recently been unable to renew my mortgage to a low rate, in fact Santander would not give me a mortgage, as my property is no longer regarded as residential but as a business this just would not be worth it with the average occupancy of 250 nights booked as quoted on this forum.

Instead of looking at the legislation the club is happier to promote Haven which provides all singing all dancing pitches off season (when CC and Cls are at their quietest). No wonder Cls close when you can have an Europitch in Haven at £9-90 per night in May all in.  I know that the mjority of Cl closures are as a result of going "commercial" and its easy to get the planning even in a NatPark. for tourists
