We will be joining our inlaws for a week at Pentwyn sands next July but before this, we would like to spend 2-3 weeks somewhere quieter (and cheaper!) We use the facilities in our van so looking for sites that have reasonable sized, level'ish pitches. We love walking so scenic would be good. Recommendations please?

Fursdon Farm near Liskeard - that's on  your way to Pentewan Sands. It was an award winning CS with the other Club but expanded and opened a second field, has hard pitches as well as grass, and is good for your walking holiday as it's on the edge of Bodmin Moor. Summer prices are £12 without electrics, £14 with, and £2 extra for hard standings.

Try The Knole CL at Bridestowe - west of Oakhampton - close to the western edge of Dartmoor - CL no. 483.

This was our review of the site:-

The Knole is perfectly located for exploring the western side of Dartmoor. Predominantly sloping grass, there is an area of hardstanding just inside the site entrance which would probably be suitable for two caravans or motorhomes. At the far end of the site there are superb views through a gateway of Dartmoor with Widgery Cross/Brat Tor, Great Links Tor & Great Nodden easily identifiable. The EHU & water supply is located in a wooded area in the centre of the site, so long electric cables will be required if you decide to pitch around the edge of the site. However, the owners do have some extension cables if required. There is a very basic information room that also houses the recycle bins.

Walking & biking from the site is easy with the Granite Way only half a mile away which is the old railway line between Okehampton & Lydford. Other trails also come through the area such as the West Devon Way, Two Castles Trail & the Dartmoor Way. On our walks we managed to find pubs on the entry/exit to the moors – those being The Fox & Hounds at Shortacombe; The Bearslake Inn at Lake Sourton [a superb thatched inn which we would highly recommend]; the Dartmoor Inn at Lyford. All were welcoming hostelries after time spent walking the tors & moors.

There is a pub [The White Hart] and a newly opened [in 2013] post office/shop in Bridestowe village that sold all manner of goods and daily newspapers.

There was some farm traffic noise at the end of most days but we didn’t find it particularly intrusive. We were visited daily by Rex the resident dog who came to play with our dog Louie. We saw Mavis & her husband on arrival and departure but they were always on hand if the need arose. The site fee of £12 per night was a fair one we felt.

We have no hesitation in recommending The Knole for a relaxing stay on the edge of Dartmoor.

Or if you want coastal then there is  Penmillard Farm on the Rame peninsula. Yes you have never heard of Rame - it's the part of Cornwall the tourists run right past. This really is a basic CL with minimal facilities and access only along the narrow cliff top road which was built to link the forts in Napoleonic times. But it's right by the sea -  and you can walk down the cliff paths to wonderful Whitsand Bay. Cornwall which only the locals know.

Hi Revellers, we are Poole Farm CL located right on the boarder of Devon and Cornwall, just north of Launceston.  Our website is www.poolefarm.com.  You can also have a look at our reviews on the Caravan Club website.  Officially, we come under the county of Devon, but if you put in Poole Farm in the main search tab you will find us.  We have all mod cons here and some amazing countryside to relax in.  Have a look and see what you think.

Trevitha Farm on Little Petherick Creek near Padstow has beautiful walks, you would have to check the price as it's probably more expensive than some. It's also not for the faint hearted access wise. There are nice coastal CLs in the South Hams in Devon.

Chaplecombe Farm is worth a look. We had a glorious 10 days here, very quiet, nice views, big pitches. The price is excellent, pub just a few hundred yards.

We have used Crosslands CL, just outside Okehampton on numerous occasions. It is easy access off the A30, up past Okehampton services. Grass pitches, but we have never had issues with mud or poor ground, even after torrential rain. This site gives you the whole of stunning Dartmoor to walk, Exeter with its beautiful cathedral is an easy 20 minutes away, Okehampton is a very nice town with a great castle and lovely shops, but as I said, the whole of Dartmoor is on your doorstep. Castle Drogo, Lydford Gorge, both NT, are close by as well. Little bit of traffic noise, but suprisingly little considering  proximity to A30. Owners are very nice, very helpful.Happy
