Engine re-mapping

I’m interested in this issue and wonder -

  1. Did you re-mappers tell your insurance companies and, if so, what was the response?
  2. Have any of you experienced problems at MOT because your emissions have been altered?
  3. Have any of you had problems claiming a repair under warranty due to the re-mapping?

When I get home, if I remember, I will look at the last 2 MOT paperwork and let you know the pre and post chip emissions readings.

Had my BMW X3 remapped from 177 bhp to 235 bhp plus 258lb/ft to 327lb/ft torque great increase in pulling power and acceleration.

Don't bother with a plug in get an ECU remap done on a rolling road.

My X3 passed it's mot no problems with emissions same as before the remap as for insurance its up to the individual, chance you take, never known a company check a cars ECU to contest a claim(I work in a car body shop with high powered remapped cars whose owners only get bottom book for there written off cars because they didn't notify insurance, spending all that money having a remap, wheels, etc.

Chance you take you can lose a lot of money, notify them I did.

A car can have just as many problems with or without a remap.

A remap gives your car the power and efficiency it should have that the manufacturers hold back until a new model comes out they use the same engine but increase the power a fraction that you get with a remap.

They can't keep building new engines every time

Cheers, One. Whatever the result, it clearly wasn't a failure.

Thanks for the info, Tuckton.

I disagree with your statement about insurance, though. It’s a requirement to tell the company and not a matter of choice.

As I said the chance you take you’ll pay the penalty,up to the individual there’s always one that will get found out.

Got a years warranty can get it reversed for free had it done by Celtic Tuning in Newquay

In much the same way as you take the chance and pay the penalty for breaking any law. frown

Not for me, I'll stick to doing the right thing as Oneputt has. What's £10 a year versus a lifetime of paying the price?

He is my twopenneth, in a previous role I restricted the warranty on remapped cars to to exclude, power train, steering, suspension, brakes etc, basically once we found a car had been remapped, we only cover trim, body and paint.

its very easy for a manufacturer to see if a car has been remapped,we just plugged in a machine and bingo, every electronic item has a footprint and any tweaking leaves a date and time and different values.

this restriction was logged for all our dealer network to view and you would be surprised as how much it knocked off the part ex price.

in regards to insurance, I had many calls from various insurance companies as to wether a vehicle had been modified electronically.

so my take is you pays your many, takes your chance but don’t cry to all and sundry if it bites you on the ar5e

After market tuning and modifying of vehicles comes with responsibility, if you do not let your insurance company know there is the chance of the policy being declared invalid. If that is the case, where does another driver stand if you hit their car and you are at fault, you are illegal and irresponsible.

I had a Bluefin remap on a previous car, the Aisin gearbox (widely fitted on a lot of cars) had a max rating of 440Nm and my car as standard developed 420Nm. The auto gearbox module would not allow additional torque to be used and the mapping took that into account.

I wonder how many tuning maps/boxes allow for the transmission components when fitted.

Has any member had a diesel engine re-mapped, and if so was it worth it?

Was this not the OP's Question ?, as to whether others disagree with the fitting of is up to the person concerned. Too many policing other drivers. the motorways are full of them in the outer lanes during average speed camera area's when there's bu99er all in the nearside lanes.

Yes, that was the OP's question, so why the rant?
