Motorhomes - servicing whilst touring

We tour a lot more than we did when we had a caravan.  We would like to be able to empty and fill our tanks without the need to stay at a club site.  Most club sites have a suitable service point for grey and black waste  and drinking water points.  Why do they not let members on tour use these facilities ?

AS Tinwheeler says and I mentioned earlier. The Camping and Caravan Club offer the facility that you want. Last time I looked they charged £7. As on many sites the adult charge can be £7 per night excluding pitch I personally feel that, for a couple or more, it is a good deal. Showers and washing machine available, toilet waste emptying, grey waste and fresh water. Good value IMO.

Personally with the location of MV points on many club sites I would be against offering this on most CC sites and particularly as in some areas there are a large amount of wild campers and so could be a number of outfits using such a facility.

There also are many CC sites that could not accommodate several motorhomes parking up for 3 hours without inconvenience to other site users. Have you considered approaching the club?

I think it would be a good idea to make the service available where MH points are suitably located. It would free up pitch spaces too.

However the club doesn't agree and said on Facebook recently that the policy wouldn't be changed.

As said there is the problem of where to park said motorhomes on many sites if, like C&CC provision is made for a 3 hour stay. I wonder if even when there is space without impacting on car park space if there is a problem with capacity i popular wild camp areas or where there are pubs etc nearby without disposal.

The club disagrees with you, r4, and reasons have been stated on this forum before. They included the fact that traffic flow on site would be increased due to MHSPs usually being sited fairly centrally on sites and possible congestion at the service points.

As I pointed out earlier, C&CC do allow, and charge for, this facility. Have you joined that club? Have you enquired at commercial sites if you can avail yourself of their facilities? Alternatively, why not book ahead for your night halts. It's what most of us do. Enjoy your touring but don't, please, consider yourself a special case. We're all in this together.

Yes I am a member of CC&C and I have used (and paid for) their facilities.

Yes I have used (and paid for) facilities on commercial sites.

Even some CLs provide the service if asked.

At no point have I ever encountered traffic flow issues or congestion.

Sometimes when I'm touring I don't want to book ahead .. I want freedom to choose, which is something I thought was important to the club.

All I'm suggesting is that the club falls into line with other organisations.

We're all in this together, but we don't all want the same thing all the time.

I've been stating the case as it is, R4, and trying to offer suggestions that might help you. However, you seem to know it all already so I'm puzzled why you posted here when you have all the answers.

May I suggest that instead of posting to me in such a forthright manner you contact the club direct? We ordinary members can tell you no more and aren't in a position to do anything about it.

Perhaps with the rebranding the Club may start to look at things more from a motorhoming perspective which would mean having a look at how Club sites are designed with a view of ease of use that might include passing units be able to fill and empty tanks. I think this would mean having motorhome service points near to entrances and purpose built rather than some of the half hearted arrangements we have currently. A few sites do have these points near the entrance but not enough to start putting such an option in place, at least yet. Its not something I would probably use but this sort of facility is quite common on sites abroad.

The positioning of MHSPs almost appear to be an afterthought on a lot of sites, as they're mostly in the middle of a site.  On a lot of sites there is a one-way traffic system, so when emptying a watertank on leaving it sometimes involves going out of the site and coming back in.  On the continent a lot of MHSPs are in the entrance area, as David points out, but of course that takes up quite a bit of space.  It would be the ideal area for them to be though.

Since motorhomes have been admitted to the Club for the past fifty years, albeit the numbers have not been significant until the past fifteen or twenty, the level of provision of proper MH facilities is indicative of the Club's absence of a real progressive ethos.

I am surprised that after your years of membership that you should think the Club would want to encourage freedom to choose and to tour without booking ahead, I dont think anything could be further from the truth, its an advance booking organisation and even tries to extend that way of thinking to overseas touring too by  encouraging unnecessary booking on continental sites  where of course it has a commercial  connection.

As others have pointed out the type of touring you want is the norm on the continent even for caravanners, you are trying to do it in the wrong country.

Whether members book ahead or not is entirely their choice David.
