So what did the Club ever do for Motorcaravanners?

It’s a while now since the Club was renamed, to reflect that there are lots of motorhomers among Members - but apart from the name change, what has and does the Club plan to do to cater effectively for motorhomers?

Well there has been a programme of improving motorhome servicepoints, to provide drive-over grey water drains, but at the club Site I most recently stayed at there was no lighting at this service point (unlike the others) so using it after dark (and it was dark at 4.30pm that day) was a matter of struggling with a torch.  But I haven’t noticed anything else specifically for motorhomers and in response a suggestion that the Club should develop overnight parking stops for motorhome like the Aires on the continent, I read somewhere that the Club’s only response was to wonder whether a discussion about whether this was a more appropriate thing for the Government rather than the Clubs to be considering.

CAMC is of course a commercial operator of full scale caravan sites and jolly good they are too but these cater primarily for people who want to stay for quite a number of days, like caravanners do, while lots of motorhomers (certainly on the Continent) make lots of use of more basic overnight parking, to stay for one or two nights only and then move on.  Some motorhomers do use their vehicles like caravans and stay on a Site for a while but lots more enjoys their holidays by keeping moving along.

For holidaying in this mode motorhomers don’t need a toilet block, resident staff and manicured grass around them every night; on most nights they don’t need much more than parking, a supply of drinking water, a drain for grey water and somewhere to empty the chemical toilet.  CAMC should be just as capable of building good Night Halt locations as it is at building full scale caravan sites - and operating them profitably.  There are lots of Aires on the continent which charge good money (and use barrier entry operated with credit cards etc) as well as the free ones provided (as a tourist facility and an attraction) by many local authorities.

There may be an argument for local authorities to build Aires as tourist attractions etc but there is also, quite separately, an argument for CAMC showing initiative in building a network of Aires in UK as a service to it’s Motorhome Members.  I think a network of CAMC Motorhome Nightstops would compliment the network of Club Sites and serve to promote them too - for example each Night Halt could easily display advertising material about nearby Club Sites.  And motorhomers who use Aires also tend to use full scale caravan sites periodically as well, for example to have a ‘laundry day”.

Isn’t someone on the Club’s staff or committees already thinking about this avenue of development - and if so can we hear something about their ideas?

should be more M/C service points as it is taking to long by having to wait to empty and fill before continuing their journey,

From what I have observed, the delay is caused by the waste tanks fitted to motor caravans having a tiny outlet, similar in size to a normal tap.  If they were fitted instead with a proper dump valve - even a 3" (other measurement systems are available) one - the tank would empty in a few seconds thereby hugely reducing the service time.

As was pointed out just a little up the thread, motor caravans do not need to fill at the dump location, "Any tap will do".

A simple 'Thank you' for the acknowledgement would probably have sufficed. wink

What you say about motorhome wastes is certainly true of some makes of motorhome. Unfortunately that is not so easy for the owner to remedy although one motorhome Facebook group I belong to there is certainly no end to the ideas of how to improve things!!

On your point about using any tap I imagine this would not be encouraged by the Club if you were filling via a hose. It would depend on the location of the service point and whether you would be blocking the road. I have even seen signs requesting motorhomes not to fill up at service points.

It does depend on the width of the road layout - and the length of the hose. I recall one motor caravan user at Strid Wood topping up the tank from the "all inclusive" service point while his outfit was on an adjacent pitch just by using a long hose.

It’s quite common, we saw a couple of MHs filling tanks from back service point near camping field at YRP. Hoses didn’t go over any road, and it only took a couple of minutes at a quiet time. 👍

I think the idea of using the  club car parks is interesting but would presumably fall foul of the fire regs in the UK. When at York recently this seemed empty most of the time apart from some locals who used it instead of parking at the park next door.  Although am sure it would be popular at somewhere like York it would also be problematic with the narrow access and people being turned away when full unless it was pre booked, and then it's not really an Aire, just a small pitch

It's frustrating that there are very few Aires in the UK.  Ambleside one was great whilst it lasted before the national park authority close it down as an eyesore from the fells and on a flood risk area (despite the fact it was right next to a massive car park that's packed everyday)

On the queuing for MH service points this can be a problem eg at same visit to York  Have always thought emptying should be separate from filling but this would use more space, or at least try to have 2 filling taps on busy sites like York where you often have to queue

A number of UK councils have provided for overnighting on some of their car parks.

Recently saw a motorhome on an adjacent service pitch using that tap and his hose to fill his tank. Saw little wrong with this, it's the same water, I guess if that pitch had been occupied then it would be rightly unacceptable. Saw other caravaners filling their water hogs and kettles at vacant service pitches too.

But a carpark won’t be much good as the users won’t have use of full fat facilities For their low payment
