We are delighted to announce that our ‘Caravanner of the Year’ competition was filmed by the BBC and will be on BBC2 on 20 and 27 April!

We hope it gets you in the mood for getting out there and enjoying the summer season on our wonderful sites network.

The enthusiasts were faced with a variety of challenges covering activities such as manoeuvring, navigation, hospitality and caravanning knowledge.  There was also the precision challenge of the Concours D’Elegance which demanded much polishing and primping of their vehicles!

The first programme will introduce the entrants and whittle them down to the three finalists.

Tune in and watch, and don’t forget to tell your friends and family about it too!

I am becoming concerned that my critical faculties may be atrophying. After the first week's fiasco I thought this week wasn't too bad notwithstanding the obvious idiosyncracies of some of the contestants. Let's be honest, a few idiosyncracies are what add to the rich tapestry of life. Think steam train afficianados or plane spotters for instance. Not however truly representative of caravanning.

Poor me! I show dogs AND I love caravanning, there's no hope for me. Haha

For next time how about adding a caravan payload test to see who is on or under, looking at some of the memorabilia and bits and bobs being wheeled out some may have been close or over.

If you read the guidelines etc ,  your post complaining, and  criticizing the club, questioning the community manger, and champions  comments and decision, breaks a number of rules etc

Be prepared to be  suspended. Hope what ever they suspend you by, it is not to painful Wink

I'd take it on the chin if I had done. I won't hold my breath for a reply of any kind.

Suspended by the chin ,that isbetter then other places, that come to mind Wink

The penny dropped for me when the contestant read out instructions for one task saying "you must arrive at the pub exactly 1 hour 47 minutes after leaving the rally"

Before that, I was having difficulty associating anything in the programme with my understanding of our hobby.

Maybe if they had called it "Caravan Rallier of the Year" - with an explanation up front of the difference between the activities that a relatively small number of ralliers get up to compared with the vast majority of CC members who don't rally?

Something like "what you are about to see is not what most caravanners (CC Members) would regard as normal activity when caravanning"

Bugs

Being a Rallier, I am not really an expert on what goes on a rally compared to those that have never been on a rally, but in the 200 odd Rallies I have attended.  I have never taken part in a time navigation test or an economy test but what do I know.

i think that the format of the show needs more work to better show the interests of caravaners as displayed on this forum.

So I would suggest the following  competition, Lack of humour, having nothing to say and saying it endlessly, being holier than thou, just for starters.   Come to think of it, it deserves it's own series what about calling it Star Chaser of the year?

In my personal opinion the Caravan Club  should have run a mile when the idea was pitched to them.  Because the end result should have entirely predictable.  But what just as predictable was the 100+ pages of heads must roll etc etc that have appeared here.

For next time how about

Just hope that there is never another time!  I believe that in Junes magazine the CEO will be trumpeting from the rooftop what a great success it was and the the CC is grateful to the BBC for giving such wide exposure (on BBC2Surprised), and of course the members are thrilledYell

One the grounds of health and safety. Why was the observer in the motorhome during the "economy run" sitting on a side facing seat without a seatbelt? Riding in the back of a motorhome like this is extremely dangerous and according to my understanding against the law.

Write your comments here...Oops done it again CC, DETAIL TO ACCURACY WENT OUT THE WINDOW YET AGAIN.... Looks like the club is being run by numpties !!! SG2

Absoulutely awful programme. This dire creation has done immense harm to the image of caravaning and simply reinforced the prejudiced steriotypes of the many. I was simply appalled.

Amen to all that. Let's knock this nonsense on the head now and get on with our caravaning. Spleens have been well and truly vented. Some have enjoyed it, most hated it, has Grinstead Towers learned anything? Probably not!!

What really hacks me off about this sorry episode is the fact that the CC so arrogantly dismisses the views of the vast majority of their members. To the best of my knowledge, no single event has ever generated so much traffic on here, most of it negative; yet the powers that be dismiss any criticism out of hand. Social media apparently liked it - yippeee, that's all right then!
