We thought Scotland was cold and rainy

The Brough
Just writing this having stayed for 11 nights. The weather has been marvellous, but perhaps a little too hot. Entrance to site is very well sign posted and no problems, with access and we are a big unit. Site was full nearly the whole time we here here, but never felt over crowded. Site is well kept and all pitches are big enough for a double axle, awning and car. Power supply was plenty for our needs ( no tripping etc) toilet and shower were a welcome bonus. The bird life was amazing and the owner sells bags of food to top up the many feeders provided. Gray water into the long grass always a bonus. Limited walks from site, but the roads are very quiet. Unusually for us we did not visit the local pubs. There is a community shop in the village which sells the normal basics and an arts centre that did coffee, teas and snacks. The Smithy cafe / restaurant was closed for their summer holidays when we visited :-( We saw no midges ;-) 26th June 23 £17 per night We will be coming back.

Kites & castles

The Brough
I'd give this site 6 stars if I could. Starting at the entrance, many sites could learn from the Brough how to clearly sign their location; it's so helpful when towing. Our arrival was greeted by a red kite flying overhead. There are five pitches terraced down the gentle slope. They are all spacious and have good views over the fields and woodland that surround the site. The facilities are excellent and include a free shower, as good as some club sites at half the price. Recycling is possible and well organised. A little free book exchange is a nice thoughtful addition, especially for people on long tours. The area to the South is very rich in heritage with many castles and places of interest. At Thrieve castle we saw ospreys and peregrine falcons and enjoyed the little boat trip across the Dee to the castle itself. Kirkcudbright is a charming little town with Broughton house and garden and Maclelland castle. Orchardton castle is marked simply as a tower on the map but is well worth a visit and for those feeling energetic try walking up Screel hill for fabulous views over the Solway. The forest park is beautiful. Imagine the Lake District with virtually no tourists and you will have a pretty good idea. That does mean that some of the hills simply don't have any paths up them, not because you can't walk up them but there are so many hills and so few people. Clatteringshaw loch is lovely and nearby Murrays monument worth a stroll up to.

Incredibly quiet!

The Brough
This must be the quietest place we have ever stayed. Although the site is just off the not very busy A road, you don't hear any road noise. The pitches are pretty level and well spaced in tiers down the slope with great views. The toilet & shower are very clean and the pitches well maintained. The owners are very friendly. We found plenty of walks in the extensive forests plus it's easy to get to the coast. The only down side is the midges (repellent and/or citronella candles a must!) but otherwise a fabulous place to stay in a beautiful area.

A dream of a place

The Brough
Such a beautiful setting for a perfect 3 night stay. Great views from the van windows and a lovely area. Weather was a bif iffy, but didn't let it stop us from enjoying the area. Not a bad approach from the A road, and far enough away not to hear it. Sloping field but pitches are pretty level. Well kept grassed areas but edges just wild enough to keep the wildlife happy. Lots of bird feeders around, and plastic boxes containing bags of seed and nuts for 50p each, kept in the spotless toilet block. We sat and watched nuthatches, blue, great and coal tits, robins, for hours sat in the sun. Great to chat to the owner who advised us about some places to visit and a riverside hotel for a great meal when we had visitors. Made to feel very welcome here and will definitely go back!

Excellent peaceful site

The Brough
This is a lovely tranquil site, well kept and with good facilities. Friendly owners. Very handy for exploring the area. The local village has a good tea room and a pub which does surprisingly good basic pub food. Dog walks from site are a bit limited, but it's very close in the car to places where they can run free. The only downside for us (and the reason it doesn't get 5*) was the midges, which can be bad if the air is still.
