Great site

We've visited a number of times over the last few years. This year we stopped over one night in early August and then for a week on the way back at the end of the month. It's a lovely personal site with much to do either walking or cycling from it. The river next to the site and Chenonceau a little further are easily accessible. Other chateaux are within reasonable driving distance and Tours can be accessed by train from the nearby station. The English owners create a friendly atmosphere and put on regular events with an inclusive meal and sometimes live music.

First class again

This was our second visit to Moulin Fort and we were not disappointed. We had booked a river pitch which was wonderful and had some shade which was essential as it was so hot during our 9 day stay. We had a mechanical problem with our motorhome which meant we had no water functioning on board. We had to use the site washrooms, something we do not usually do. They were wonderful. Clean, functional and hot. We were so pleased. We attended some of the site dinners which were wonderful. Its a great place to cycle from. We completed the 20 mile circular route a few times and it was super, stopping along the way for coffee and or wine tasting. We fully recommend Le Moulin Fort. We shall be booking again. If you are heading en route north or south, its a super location to break the journey.

5 night stay September

Stayed here for 5 nights first part of September-2 adults no children. Campsite easy to find and lovely riverside setting. We were lucky with a riverside pitch which appeared larger than other pitches elsewhere. Pitches are not clearly delineated and some are not so easy to access. Facilities were basic but adequate. They could do with updating but were kept nice and clean. Campsite only has 6 amp electricity and we were aware of others tripping their supply. There was the occasional train noise but it did not bother us. We didn't use the restaurant so can't comment on it. Staff friendly and helpful Campsite is ideally placed for visiting Chenoneaux and the Chateau as it is less than half an hours easy walk to access both. Other places we visited from there were Amboise and Chambord (slightly further away but well worth a visit). We enjoyed our stay here and all in all a good site as a base for visiting the area.

Response from the Site:

Many thanks for your review and we are glad you enjoyed your time at the site. We are not allowed to delineate the pitches due to the restrictions put on us by the local community in regards to flooding - as we are very lucky to be directly on the river if it floods we can have nothing that can collect the debris from the flood water -if there is a serious problem with electricity please speak to us at reception and we can try and help.

First class on the banks of the Cher river

To the east of Tours Le Moulin Fort is an English run beautiful site on the banks of the river Cher close to Blere and Amboise. Pitches are flat and well kept. The restaurant is very good and there is lots to do in the area. Beware that the site is only six amps! Tricky if your outfit has all the mod cons. Very friendly welcome and the river pitches are truly fantastic. Go walking, cycling, wine tasting or take a pleasure motor boat along the river. Thank you Moulin Fort for a fab stay. Fully recommended.

Good location but very average facilities.

Stayed one night enroute north. Level pitches alongside River Cher and good location for visiting nearby towns and chateaux. Pleasant enough but washrooms looking a bit tired and restuarant was more of a snack bar serving up burgers and chips, etc. Long queues for (pre-ordered) bread and little else to buy in shop aside from local wine. Ok for short stay but would not recommend for longer.

Great overnight stop

We stayed for 1 night on way back from Ardeche. Very friendly welcome, pitches bit difficult to find due to markers and quite small, facilities could do with updating though very clean and showers hot, unfortunately the staff were holding a Christmas night with dinner so unable to try restaurant, Site by the river - only downside is this is a 3* site and at 40 euros for family of 4 for 1 night, expensive Great stopover site

Le Moulin Fort 2018

We stayed here for 2 weeks in 2017 and this visit was for 5 nights on our return North after being in the Dordogne. The site is peaceful, pitches of a good size although the small bushes, hedges and trees don't necessarily demarcate the spaces as clearly as the could be. The staff are courteous and helpful right from early bread collection service right through to evening dinner and bar service. There are themed food and entertainment nights as well as some visiting entertainment. The small shaded pool is well used and the sunbeds and chairs often in full use. The shower and toilet blocks look a little dated and there were signs that planned upgrade works had not been completed due to bad weather over the winter. Certainly some sprucing up and painting would be beneficial. The small shop has all the basic essentials to get you by and there is a good Super U towards Montrichard (15 minutes) or a good range of supermarkets in Blere (10 minutes). The riverside position is wonderful and the riverside can be accessed by steps at the far end of the site although the pitches along the river do seem to give the impression of it not being accessible for everyone. There are great cycle paths and footpaths easily accessible on both sides of the river and the distances you can go are great. The surrounding area has some of the most wonderful royal chateau from just 3 km up the road to Blois which is a bit further afield. The wifi (5 euro for 5 days) only works on the patio in front of the bar and it would be better if it were extended site wide. It worked fairly well although it would be better if it were accessible from your pitch and I imagine most people would pay a little more for that. I would always come back here for its friendly and peaceful feeling. The owners need to keep on top of their maintenance projects to ensure that the feel of the place is not let down by degrading facilities. It is to be noted that the nearby bridge over the River Cher is being widened over the Autumn and Winter and this may impact on access in the early part of the 2019 season.

Favourite Spot

Stayed there last year, this year and already booked for 2018. Many - perhaps most - of the people we meet on site are regular visitors, which speaks volumes for the site. It is a quiet and peaceful site in a great location, with excellent, flat cycle paths along the river, ideal for occasional cyclists like us. Families are welcome & if your kids like walking, cycling & kayaking on the river, it would be a good choice, but don't expect big pools with water slides & a gamut of children's entertainment - it's not that sort of site & doesn't pretend to be. Great for visiting the Loire chateaux, villages and bigger towns like Amboise and Loches and a wonderful, quirky open air bar along the river bank past Chenonceau and next to the cycle path.

Le Moulin Fort 2017

We stayed for 6 nights using this as a base for visiting some of the chateaux of the Loire. We found this to be a very well run site - a credit to the owner and his hard-working staff. The pitches are all extremely generous in size and are all grassy and level. The site is peaceful, day and night and is excellently placed next to the River Cher (the afore-mentioned railway noise was barely noticeable). There are 2 shower blocks which are more than adequate although the water in the showers could have been a bit warmer! They were always clean (but I would recommend you take your own toilet roll as trying to judge your requirements from the large roll outside the toilet is something of a lottery!). We took our small dog and were delighted by the range of walks we were able to use from the site including a riverside walk down to the chateau of Chenonceau (very nice for humans too!). We didn't use the pool but did visit the restaurant on our first night. The food was tasty but the menu is rather limited. We used the bar more frequently and were satisfied with the range and prices of the drinks available. There are plentiful restaurants within 5 minutes travelling from the site including Michelin rated eateries. We had a lovely break here and would definitely return.

Good in parts

Perfect location on the Cher and easy to get to. Great cycling along the river banks, and Chenonceau was walkable and easily cyclable. Amboise lovely. Hot air balloons at dawn and dusk made a magnificent sight. A big site, seemingly very popular for some who were there for several weeks and who stored their vans there. Pitch allocation a little haphazard and our chosen pitch was taken by the time we returned to the office, even though we had parked on it. Some of the pitches were bare of grass - even by mid-June. There is no differentiation between pitches other than off the roadway - you make your own space. For us, the other issue of pitches was that all the riverside pitches were taken (some are pre-booked up to five years in advance we were told later) but these form a kind of barrier between the rest of the site and the river. It was possible to walk through the pitches to reach the riverside, but it felt like intrusion. Shower blocks were pretty basic, and were not well treated by the mixed caravan, motorhome and camping fraternity. Morning fresh bread was excellent and much appreciated. Bar somewhat pricey for drinks. We didn't eat there. Small number of essential food etc supplies also sold. Book exchange a great idea. Staff very friendly and helpful. We didn't use the pool. WiFi worried me as there was a pop-up interception (probably by cookie drop) in French warning me that my machine was unsafe etc etc. I pointed this out to the owner but he didn't seem overly concerned. Since I had only connected with the wifi log-on and a couple of UK sites, it was clear where the pop-up had emanated from. I couldn't tell whether it offered a malware link or whatever as I didn't have time and only used it for one day. However, the log-in page for the wifi use populated every one of my open browser windows. ;-) It probably needs a safety/usage review. Overall, probably not the ideal site for us (but it was for others) and we probably won't return there.
