Excellent site right in the city centre

We have stayed at this site numerous it is in an excellent location for York and all the shops, bars and restaurants you could desire. There are lots of places you. An walk along the river and a lovely park next door. The facilities are very good and always clean.

Disappointed

We've visit this site several times a year and are aware of the site rules and arrival time. We arrived 20 minutes early and were told we couldn't wait in the usual arrival area. We were told to leave the site and park in the park and ride car park. When we returned at 1pm, there were several vehicles in the waiting area. We were then told our new vehicle was too big for the site, it is 29cm too big. We had updated our details through head office and the app was upto date. The warden was quite abrupt and said he'd let us on this time but this would be our last stay, we pointed out we'd be to this site only a few weeks early with the same vehicle and no one told us the vehicle was too big. The warden said the reason was because a child had been killed on site, when I went online, the accident was caused by a towing vehicle and not a Motorhome. That night we noticed 3 other vehicles on site which exceeded the size limit, one vehicle was bigger than ours. We asked for a late departure as it would be our last time at the site, the answer was no. During our stay, we noticed the wardens pointing towards our vehicle as they drove past, and as we packed away on our departure day, a warden went behind our van to reposition the wooden stake, but we hadn't hit it. It felt as if we were being intimated. If we had known the arrival area was not to be used, then we could have avoided the first problem. If we were told our vehicle exceeded the site limit, we could have avoided the second problem. Instead our holiday was ruined. We will no longer be able to visit that site.

fantastic stay near the centre of York

We've just got back from a 3 night stay at Rowntree Park. This was a bit of a last minute change of plan due to the snow forecast, so we decided to stay somewhere a little closer to home and a little less 'out-in-the-wilds'. This was our first stay at this site and will definitely stay again. Arrived and was greeted by a friendly and helpful warden, who gave us a helpful plan of the site. The site is quite compact with about 100 pitches, the pitches are a decent size although I can imagine longer units and caravans might find it a bit tight in places. There are lots of hedges between pitches that give some degree of privacy which is good. The pitches seem flat, tidy and the whole site is well maintained. The one-way system is bit convoluted but it does mean you have to drive right round the site to reach the motorhome service point but you can use this time to view and choose your pitch. Due to the location, the access roads are a bit tight, so its needs some care driving through the local streets. There is nowhere really to wait just prior to accessing the site so you do need to plan to arrive after 1pm as stated on the booking information. The shower/toilet block is excellent, very clean and in a very good condition and although the site was full when we were there, it never felt too busy or overcrowded. The other facilities incl, MSP, CEP, dishwashing area, and information point were also excellent, very clean and tidy and perfectly maintained. Only slight negative comment is the absence of free wi-fi across the site, something I think should be included in the price. The site, is obviously popular due to its close proximity to the city centre, only about a 15 minutes walk in, there is also a lovely walk along the river and to the local park. A nice touch is a pedestrian gate at the back of the site allowing easy access to a local parade of shops, bars and cafes - so we didn't always feel the need to go into town. We'd never really considered using our motorhome for a 'city break' but this was ideal, and we look forward to returning soon.

Site with great access to the City

We were met at the barrier by a cheery Warden who confirmed our booking details and got us on to the site as quickly as possible (time was 13:05) Site is quite tight due to the Beech hedges (which I appreciate also give privacy) and access to reverse onto some of the pitches, without a mover it would be a little tricky on some, not all, pitches I read a review which mentioned noisy Air conditioning at the 'Roomzz' hotel next door, so we pitched well away, however, I walked around the site a couple of times and all I could hear were the Birds singing? Perhaps the issue has been resolved now. having said that I couldn't see any Air con units on the building either. Site couldn't be better placed for access to York and its plentiful restaurants and Bars, a 15 minute walk gets you right to the heart of the City. Lots of attractions to visit and some Fab restaurants, we ate at Ate o'clock, Star inn the city and Pairings, Bars we tried incuded Dyl's (worth seeing once but a bit scruffy) Plonkers (Great) Fossgate Social, Fossgate taps and the Cosy club, these get busy at night time but Fossgate is a lively entertaining street well worth a wander. Walmgate (fossgate becomes walmgate heading east) has many small restaurants and a very diverse range of cuisines, Yemeni, Korean, Japanese, French, to name but a few. Turning right from the site and following the river takes you to Rowntree park and continue to the Millenium bridge, cross and return up the other bank of the river for a nice little 1.1/2 to 2 mile walk.

It has become one of our favourites.

Excellent site in the best of locations. We have been 3 times in 12 months and will return. At first we were appalled at the price but the facilities, convenience and accessibility to the city centre make it worth every penny. Very good for dog owners (turn right out of the gate, walk to the bridge over the river and on the other side they can run to their heart's content). There is a lot to see and do in York. It's a compact but interesting and friendly city. Enough to bring us back over and over again. Thank you

Great site, fabulous location, great wardens, just don't be first in the queue

It was our first trip of the year, and as ever, we prepared in advance for our journey to one of our favourite sites. Motorhome cleaned, clothes and food packed away in eager anticipation, Post Code punched into the Sat Nav, what could possibly go wrong? It became apparent during our journey that we would be 30 minutes early, so we pulled into the nearest services and had a coffee. Sat Nav checked once more, telling us we would arrive at 13:00hrs, which would maximise our time in York. We unusually sailed through York, meeting little to no traffic, the red lights were kind to us, and before we knew it, well, 12:58 to be precise, we could see The Swan pub and our Clementhorpe Rd turn. We pulled into the site, and once again unusually for us, we were the first to arrive, but noticed at least two other motorhomes directly behind us. I got out of the van and started to chat to lady behind us, and after a few seconds the blind came up signaling they had opened the office, and the Warden came down the steps to great us. Now, let me state my position clearly. I fully understand and abide by the club rules, they are there for a reason, and can only imagine the chaos that is caused when people disregard the rules that are there to benefit the local area, the Wardens (who do a fine job in sometimes difficult circumstances), and the customers who use the sites. But why oh why was I reminded that I was too early! The conversation went something like this: Warden – Yet another day this year when people turn up early, not had a single day this year when everyone turns up at the time they should. Me – I was 2 minutes early Warden – You were 5 Me – In fact, it would have been more like 90 seconds early (remembering the time at The Swan), but you know how it is, timing a journey and negotiating the traffic through York Warden – You have Sat Nav Me – Yes, and Sat Nav told me I would get here at 13:00, but there were no expected traffic hold ups. I then realised how ridiculous the conversation had become, and decided to let everyone get on with things, but it bugged me all holiday, and I wondered if the people in the motorhomes behind me who also arrived 90 seconds early where also reminded of the arrival time. PS, it obviously still bugs me, otherwise I wouldn’t have posted this review.

A great site, ideal location, a bit expensive

We stayed recently for 2 nights, having been before in early January. It is an ideal site from which to explore York centre, as it is easily accessible by foot or bike. The facilities are clean and tidy and the welcome was warm and friendly. It is quite an expensive site to stay at in comparison to others, but the central location probably explains it. We will be coming again when it's warmer to explore the area by bike.

Sadly disappointed

I have visited this site many times and enjoying our stays so choose it as our first site to visit since covid. Some of what I am about to say is about the site and other parts about the club. The site is the same but the new block of flats next door make sleep difficult as there air unit it running all night and can be heard quiet easily from in my caravan. Has this not been sort by the club and local council. I was told of by a warden for allowing my dog to poo before i could get off site even though I fully cleaned up. My dog doesn’t understand the site rules I am afraid. The way I was approached was aggressive very much like some of the site signage. Yet I seen lots of people not abaying the site speed limit even though this site has a history of accident but no warden to be seen. About the club, simply to complicated to book, to pricy, to difficult to make last minute changes without great cost. It explains why there were pitches available at the site at a peek time when in previous years even with the booking blocks the site would have been fully booked. I was interested for the club to try deposits but it looks like a disaster from a business point of view and totally impractical for caravaners who genuinely want to book their full season of holidays in one go unless you are rich. I sadly will be checking out my options before I book another club site. Very disappointed since covid thing have changed so much and not in a good way

Another nice stay at Rownt

Stayed here a couple of nights again week before christmas, it’s in a great spot for walking into York centre. We wanted to book again with friends first week of 2023, 4/5th Jan but i’m not paying £85 for 2 nights and neither are our friends. Sorry but i’d rather put it to a site in Spain where I aren’t getting ripped off, It’s a lovely site with lovely wardens but sorry it’s just getting too expensive and while members keep paying these prices, they’ll keep putting them up.

Thankyou - you are great 👍

Warm welcome from the moment we arrived in the pouring rain. Great site, ticks all the boxes however this holiday was an emotional week for us, for a variety of reasons. The knowledge, support and friendliness of the wardens was amazing. We are truly grateful, you really did make all the difference. Thank you, Dave and Helen
